Permission would not have been granted, nor did he ask; instead, he went straight to the detention block after his meeting with the prefect and located Shekalane’s cell. It was easy to do, for it was the only one with a light beneath its door. Indeed, it was the only one in the entire cellblock that was occupied.

“Shekalane,” he whispered, crouching, and braced the meal flap open with his finger. “It’s Dravidian.”

At last she said, sounding distant and utterly confused: “I cannot see you. Opening the flap triggers a light: It—it hurts my eyes, and burns the skin of my face. And yet it is cold—the cell, I mean. So cold.”

He withdrew his finger, allowing the flap to close, and thought he heard her teeth chatter. The dragger’s great paddle wheel churned.

“Why have you come to me, Dravidian of the ferrymen?”

“You are about to be interviewed by the prefect himself, Asmodeus. During this interview you will be asked about your involvement with Valdus and his revolution. Answer him truthfully—names, dates, tactical information—he has assured me personally that you will be spared if you do so. Do you understand?”

A silence followed. “Spared. That’s a curious choice of words. I trust by this you mean I will not be punished or killed … but that I will still be delivered into sexual slavery.”

“Shekalane …”

“I’ve had a great amount of time to think, Dravidian. It’s—it’s in our nature; we women, that when faced with a closed door yet another door opens … in our minds. And I’ve decided that Valdus has been right all along: the Lottery must end.” She paused as the great ship rumbled all around them. “And I’ve decided something else; which is that his methods are justified, after all. Indeed, what is death—physical death, I mean—when compared to imprisonment and the suffocation of one’s soul? The former at least provides an escape; but the latter …. No, Dravidian, I will not cooperate. Not even if I am tortured unto death.”

“You don’t mean that, Shekalane.”

“What know you of what I mean and what I do not? You, who mistook a ploy, and a successful one, for an expression of love for Valdus? You, who in turn used that to retreat into your former self and turn your back on all that we have learned and experienced? No, I tell you plainly that I will not submit, and you—your order—will be forced to destroy me. Now please, go away. For, although I love you, I cannot abide by what you have done.”

At last Dravidian lowered his head. “Nor can I abide by what you have done, Shekalane. For by aiding and abetting Valdus, if only in bringing him comfort, you did also turn your back—on all his crimes and victims. And you would aid him still.” He stood and swung his mask around on its strap, prepared to put it on. “It would seem we are at an impasse, at last. Whatever our fates, then …” He fingered the façade’s velvety lining. “Know that you, too, are loved.”

Then he whirled to leave and, whirling, came face to face with a brownie in a dung-colored goblin mask and holding a tray—who quickly looked away and just as quickly looked back, as though recognizing him as someone personally significant to him. Dravidian stared at him for perhaps two breaths, taken aback by the directness of his gaze, and sensing, too, something—well, he could not define it, and quickly placed his mask to his face and depressed the pad at his temple, sealing it with a hiss.

Scholars relate that the scriptures of the 4000 year-old pre-Tibetan Zhang Zhung culture may be the earliest extant references to this mysterious realm, yet it is described in many ancient traditions; the pre-Buddhist B’on treaties, the Kalki lore, the Puranas, the earliest texts of the Kalachakra Laghutantra, and in the ancient wisdom traditions of civilizations throughout the Himalayan regions of Asia and beyond. The Zhang Zhung and Tibetan scriptures refer to the mysterious world as Shambhala I lam-yig, B’on treaties as Olmolungring, Hindu histories as Aryavarth, Chinese as Hsi Tien, and Russian traditions as Belovoyde.
In an esoteric treatise composed in the early 1500s by Ensapa Lobsang Döndrup, the Third Panchen Lama describes his remarkable visit to a land of wise masters hidden deep in the Himalayas. A rare manuscript written in 1592 by Antonio Monserrate, a Spanish missionary to the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar, speaks of his experiences in a remote valley in the high mountains where great sages reside. A remarkably similar account is found as recently as the late 1700s, written by the esteemed Sixth Panchen Lama, Lobsang Palden Yeshe.
Years ago, on an extended trek into a closed and largely unexplored inner region of the vast Himalayan wilderness, in an isolated valley surrounded by towering ice peaks, explorer M.G. Hawking chanced on a beautiful small village. In that community he encountered extraordinary men and women, introduced to him as “masters” and “sages.”
Our team at Wisdom Masters Press has worked to compose a series of books based on Hawking’s journals and field notes detailing his experiences in that remote area of the Himalayas. This was a complex project; during his sixty-two months in those regions, Hawking accumulated hundreds upon hundreds of pages of hand-written journal entries and field notes, all of which had to be sorted, cataloged and organized in a manner conducive to producing a series of books from such a treasury of material. So, what can I tell you about me?

Had I considered becoming an author? Early on, yes. I wrote and bound my own books with needle and thread, glue and staples as a child. I’d always written in those days, often pairing with it my love of visual arts by illustrating each book. I created my own superhero universe and made dozens of comic books. Then, that all went away – the writing – as I decided to focus on the visual arts.

In high school I became interested in the great impressionists, not the least of which were The Group of Seven; a compilation of Canada’s greatest talents at the turn of the 20th century. They still inspire me; a wave of inexplicable creativity envelopes me when in the presence of their paintings. Being Canadian myself I am drawn to the wild place they portrayed, an avid outdoors enthusiast.

I graduated Sheridan College’s Interpretive Illustration course, worked as a bartender for many years as I tried to cut it in the freelance world. Nothing seemed to stick. Then writing returned with a vengeance. A manuscript I presented to a new friend who had been traditionally published came back to me edited and in book form. Self-published! The idea that I could be an author again became a consideration, if not a reality.

I reworked the novel, taught myself the processes behind self-publishing and submitted the book to Amazon with great expectations. This was 2009 and ebooks were relatively new. I was able to find an audience and decided to write two more and make the book a trilogy. This happened quickly and I was rewarded with a number of reviews, good and bad, but word was getting out.

When my marketing couldn’t keep the momentum up I realized a new book, and then another. My personal life was in a shambles and I was writing in part for my own sanity. More books came and I continued to self-publish, skipping the rejection letters I’d received before my first book was published.

In 2021 I’ve published 13 books ranging in genres, with two trilogies, a series and many standalone books. It has been my absolute joy to rediscover the love of writing. To revisit that childhood freedom where you can do anything and be anyone. I’ve also been able to include illustrations into a few of the books.

Discovering your purpose is a massive step in realizing your best life. Gifting myself the right to be an author has afforded me incredible growth as an artist and as a human being. I write with renewed devotion to offer stories that inspire and entertain; stories with depth of emotion and original plots.

I’m truly grateful to those who have helped me realize my childhood dream of becoming an author from editors to beta readers’ right up the ranks to those of you willing to read my books. It’s incredible to experience the endless stories that present themselves from the ether. The more you write the more you’re gifted to write. I believe anyone who wants to be a writer can be a writer if they write, and love the process. We all have a story in us, and from my experience, the more stories you tell the more you’re bound to tell.
