Dori Durbin grew up most of her life in a small town in Michigan. After earning a BA in English and a secondary teaching certification, Dori taught high and middle school English and Science classes for ten years. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Human Sevices specializing in Schools & Communities

After an illness, she switched gears and began her career as an certified personal trainer and fitness instructor. She also began to pursue her passion of being and artist and author. She currently still lives in Michigan with her amazingly smart and talented family: husband, son, daughter, three pleasantly pampered indoor cats, and her old Great Dane.

Dori teaches youth art and participates occasionally in art shows. She has additionally taken courses with Make Art that Sells (Lila Rogers), Story Teller Academy (Arree Chung), art classes, participates in a few of the gallery and special event shows the Little Blue Mushroom (Kristen Balouch). She hopes to continue to learn about writing and illustration for children— and owning many cats!

About October Mourning

In the midst of a World War, the true enemy was unseen. It came with a handshake or a breath and it left behind 40 million dead.

In October 1918, World War I was winding down, but the world had yet to face the deadliest killer known. Spanish Flu would devastate the world. In Cumberland, Maryland, Dr. Alan Keener, a young doctor fresh from medical school, suspects the flu has reached Allegany County. He wants to take steps to prevent its spread, but he is met with resistance from old-school doctors who believe that the flu’s deadliness is overblown and easily treated. They soon learn differently as the flu begins to spread throughout the county. No one is safe from its effects.

A street preacher named Kolas aids the flu’s spread. During the delirium caused with his own bout with the flu, he believes he was anointed as the wrath of God and must spread to the flu to bring God’s retribution on the world.

As Alan races along with other doctors trying to find some vaccine that works, he must deal with overwhelming sickness in the county. Nearly half of the residents have the flu and many are dying. Nurses and doctors are already in short supply because many are serving in the war. It becomes a critical shortage now as many fall sick with the flu themselves and those left have a workload that would be overwhelming even if there had been no shortage.

The fight becomes personal for Alan as his daughter and then his wife fall victim to the flu. Can he find a treatment to keep them alive or will they become one of the millions who are dying?

I have written many fictional short stories in a variety of genres beginning in 2015. These works have been published individually and collectively. In 2020 I published a book under the title Adult Short Stories which is available on Kindle and as a paperback. The following year I published Adult Short Stories 2: More Tales for you which like the first book is available as an e-book and as a paperback.

I’ve also written several political works for the Edification Party. The movement’s manifesto was published in 2016. This was followed by the work Philosophy which was published in 2019. In 2021 I wrote and published a piece call Imagination. All three works were published as a short book in the same year. One other work of non-fiction you will find here is a diary I briefly kept for a few months after the pandemic hit.

Between the beginning of April and the end of June 2021 I wrote two novellas. The first, Frank’s Jack, focuses on the life of Jack William Howlett as he goes from boy to man and from country to country on his life’s journey. As people come in and out of his life he discovers more and more about himself and the human condition. The second story, The Great Gant, is the tale of a privileged member of the British upper class living on easy street. He is a man driven by greed and jealousy. He is a very wealthy individual having inherited millions of pounds from his father. But he is not a happy man. He longs for recognition and has a hunger for power. Will he be able to achieve his ambitions and live out his fantasies in the political world?
Both of these works are available as Kindles and as paperbacks.
In early 2022 I published my third novella. The work is titled Rylee: City at the Hard Edge. The story takes place for the most part in a shanty town on the Isle of Man in the early 22nd century. Political extremism and personal struggle are the main themes of the tale. It is in both ebook and paperback form.
