About Bribing Saint Anthony by Rita Moreau

Bribing Saint Anthony will be featured on Kindle Countdown for 99 cents on August 15, 16, 17 and 18. Grab it while you can!

Bribing Saint Anthony is an entertaining and humorous mystery.
    A missing husband.
A plot to blow up a national treasure.
    Fortune telling aunts.

Mary Catherine, MC for short, didn’t move as the Queen of Boca Vista, Babbs La-Fleur, placed a pile of cash, which appeared out of a purse she knew cost more than her car, smack dab in the middle of her desk.

Word at all the cocktail parties was that MC had a skill that came in handy for an aging socialite going through a divorce. She was good at finding cash in hidden bank accounts. Cash to pay for a nip and tuck and a new identity: Cougar.

Hired that day by Queen Babbs to find her bad boy husband, Charlie, MC was back on familiar ground, tracking down bad guys through clues left in the DNA of their paper life.

Asking her Aunt Sophia to read the family fortune telling cards might have helped. Instead, the paper trail Charlie left takes MC from a murder in the world of rich socialites to working with covert government agents deep in the world of counter terrorism.

    Author Bio:
I started to write seriously a few years ago. Seriously may not be an entirely appropriate description since my style is ‘serious humour.’ That is, amusing situations wrapped up in a semi-serious plot. It is my view that there are already plenty of heavy, momentous works out there to challenge the intellect and perhaps, just occasionally, the reader might like something fun and light hearted. My aim therefore is simply to entertain and the writing style is light and easy on the consciousness…observational slapstick. But it doesn’t mean the story can’t have some complexities. Humour gives you licence to go where you choose. I quite like that freedom.

I like to see the fun in situations and often the simplest things can provide humorous inspiration quite unintentionally, so I like to keep the radar that sees the ridiculous fully switched on!

Cupid’s Pursuit is light, fun reading. However, beneath the comic adventures of the central character, Matthew Malarkey, lies a social comment on the internet dating phenomenon that will appeal to both male and female readers alike.

The follow up novel, Vegas Pursuit, takes Matthew on a big adventure to celebrate a big birthday where once more fate conspires to make life anything but straightforward!

I am currently working on the third and final book of what I call the Pursuit Series, entitled ‘Diamond Pursuit.’ This will be out in the WINTER of 2014.

Most of the situations that appear in this series of books are based on real life. Yes, even the most outlandish ones but with the added flavour of poetic licence. My characters are a mix of the most extreme sides of a number of people I have encountered in real life with a healthy shovelful of imagination.

I hope you enjoy them all.

If you would like to know more about the books I can be reached on cupidspursuit@hotmail.co.uk

  6. The Making of Nebraska Brown by Louise Caiola

tmonb_ebook_coverAbout The Making of Nebraska Brown by Louise Caiola:

The last thing eighteen-year-old Ann Leigh remembers is running from her boyfriend in a thick Nebraska cornfield. This morning she’s staring down a cool Italian sunrise, an entire continent from the life she once knew. The events of the eighteen months in between have inexplicably gone missing from her memory.

All at once she’s living with Tommy, an attractive, young foreigner asking for her continued love. Though he’s vaguely familiar, she recalls a boy named Shane in America who she reluctantly agreed to marry. Juggling a new world while her old one is still M.I.A is difficult enough without the terrifying movie scenes spinning a dizzy loop in her mind: glimpses of a devastating house fire, a romance gone wrong, an unplanned pregnancy, and a fractured family – each claiming to be part of who she once was – a girl and a past somehow discarded.

Ann Leigh must collect the pieces of herself to become whole again, but she doesn’t know who to trust especially when Tommy’s lies become too obvious to ignore. And above all, her heart aches to discover what became of the child she may or may not have given birth to.

The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girl’s coming apart from the inside and the great lengths she’ll go to reclaim herself and find her way home.

  9. Five Days in May by Ninie Hammon

5Days2b-copy-2About Five Days in May by Ninie Hammon:

A twister’s coming. A big one, a monster F5—a mile wide and 8 miles tall.

The writhing finger of death hurls across the prairie toward the little town of Graham, Oklahoma, one Friday afternoon in May, 1963, on a collision course with the lives of 4 people—each of whom has already planned a personal rendezvous with death in some other form that day.

In Jonas Cunningham’s mind, what he’s planning isn’t murder. The handful of little white pills that will free his precious Maggie from the fog of Alzheimer’s is a gift, a final act of unconditional love.

Jonas’s 16-year-old granddaughter, Joy, isn’t planning “murder” either. She’s pregnant and sees only one way to keep from shaming her family. Secrets like that are hard to keep though, especially in a small town.

Joy’s father, Rev. Mac MacIntosh has lost his wife and his faith and on Friday, he plans to commit professional suicide—not just leave his church, but abandon his call to ministry.

Princess has an appointment with the Reaper on Friday, too, one she’s been staring down for 14 years. At 5 o’clock, the state of Oklahoma will strap her into an electric chair called Sizzlin’ Suzie and turn on the juice.

But as the strange, psychic death row inmate meets daily with the minister during the final 5 days of her life, everything in both their lives begins to change. Princess knows—about Mac’s life and family. And sees—the Big Ugly coming to eat up the world. She sees other terrible things, too, and is determined to carry to her grave an incredible secret about the little sister she confessed to beheading more than a decade ago.

When the savage tornado rumbles with a sound like gravel in a blender into their small prairie town on that May Friday, all 4 of the people who’d penciled in “death” on their calendars actually do confront eternity.

But none of them comes to the crossroads of life and death by the path they’d planned or leaves with the result they expected.

If Ninie Hammon had to choose between telling stories and eating, she would starve to death. Ninie spent a quarter of a century as a journalist, a career that began as a reporter and ended when she started and became publisher of her own newspaper, with a circulation of 75,000 people. During her 15 years in newspaper, she won more awards for news, feature, column and editorial writing than any other journalist in the history of the Kentucky Press Association.

In 2006, she left her newspaper when her husband’s job took the couple to England, where they lived for 6 years. That’ where she tried her hand at writing contemporary suspense fiction and discovered it was a whole lot more fun to design her own armed robbery or make up her own murder investigation than to report the facts of a real one.

Since then, she has published a biography, God Said Yes, and six contemporary novels: Sudan, The Memory Closet, Home Grown, Five Days in May, Black Sunshine and The Last Safe place. Her seventh novel, When Butterflies Cry, will be released in the fall of 2014.

Five Days in May was awarded a Mom’s Choice Award Gold Medallion seal in May, 2014.

Ninie’s novels are packed with action and tension—thrillers, mysteries or inspirational fiction that’s deeply moving, filled with the drama of a family in crisis. But however diverse, they all share one characteristic: they are peopled with gloriously complex characters who drag the reader into the story to live it with them.

Ninie grew up in a small town—doesn’t get much smaller than Muleshoe, Texas. But she now lives a mildly vagabond life. She and her husband, Tom, travel between their home in Louisville, KY and one in the village of Great Linford in Buckinghamshire north of London where Tom directs Young Life in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Scandinavia. The couple has six children and eight grandchildren.

  11. Melody Madson – May It Please the Court? by Jodie Toohey

Layout 1About Melody Madson – May It Please the Court? by Jodie Toohey:

Melody is a genius sixteen-year old attorney at the law firm of Lazlo, Marshdon and Brown. When she is introduced to L, M and B’s other attorneys and employees on her first day, she immediately realizes how difficult it will be getting the new adults in her life to take her seriously, but resolves to give it her best and try to make friends at the firm.

Melody spends her first few weeks at work sitting idle in her office and begins to question her decision to become an attorney. Things start looking up when she is photocopying a binder of exhibits and helps senior partner, Dan Marshdon, Jr., locate a lawsuit opinion in the law books after another associate, Maggie, is too busy to help him. On her way to lunch, Maggie thanks her for helping and Melody thinks she may have found her first friend at the firm.

Another two weeks pass before Melody finally gets her big break when Dan Marshdon assigns her to handle her first real case representing a client trying to stop demolition of the Midland Marquee Theater building as the result of the settlement of a slip and fall case at the building.

Melody’s excitement about her first real case is cut short when her best friend, Jewel Johnson, barely pays attention to her news and is more concerned with her date to her high school’s fall dance. Melody and Jewel’s friendship becomes more strained as Melody’s friendship with Maggie advances and she develops romantic feelings for Dan’s son, Eric, who is assigned to help with her case as an high school assistant. Her feelings for Eric deepen, her relationship with Jewel goes sour, the key medical record in her case turns up missing, and Melody feels her life is crumbling around her. Things appear even more hopeless when the original of the key medical record is destroyed from the doctor’s office so cannot be duplicated.

When she can stand it no longer, Melody tells Eric about her true feelings for him, but she doesn’t get the reaction she expected. After working the entire weekend before trial to try to find a way to save the case, Melody finds the missing medical record but, before she can celebrate, she’s cornered. Jewel attempts to free her but she is caught and the friends are tied to an office chair, driven out to the middle of nowhere and left alone. Will they be able to save the case – or themselves?

    Author Bio:
I was born and grew up in eastern Iowa in towns along the Mississippi River, Clinton and Camanche, respectively. My writing career began at ten years old when I caught the writing bug after a school assignment. From that moment, I was either writing or thinking I should be writing. Upon graduating from high school, I had amassed enough scholarship awards to pay for half of my college education and started the following fall at Iowa State University. As part of my honors program, I took creative writing classes to fulfill my humanities requirements.

In April, 2001, I moved to Davenport, Iowa and began working as a Paralegal for a prominent local law firm. I enjoyed the position, learned a lot, and got to work with numerous quality attorneys, assistants, and staff members; however, after several years my job satisfaction declined. When I looked closely at my job, I found the parts from which I gained the most satisfaction were those tasks involving writing.

When a friend from work was diagnosed with breast cancer, I asked myself if something happened to me where I was removed from living or at least prohibited from participating in life for a long period of time, “What would I leave undone?” That answer and my experience with my growing preteen daughter and the friends in her scout troop led me to publish Crush and Other Love Poems for Girls in 2008.

My interest in writing as a profession grew. I completed a young adult novel manuscript, started another, and began thinking about how I could earn a living from writing. I opened Jodie Toohey Writing Innovations in January, 2010. Since then, I completed my second young adult novel manuscript and have now started a third. I’ve written some articles for the web and continue to build my portfolio by completing various writing and editing projects and volunteering my writing skills to the Midwest Writing Center. I won the Bettendorf Public Library’s Love Poem Contest in early 2012; my full length poetry collection, The Other Side of Crazy, was released by 918studio in September, 2013. I published my novel Missing Emily: Croatian Life Letters in the fall of 2012. Melody Madson – May It Please the Court? came out in the summer of 2014.

After attending a local half day conference in April, 2012, I decided it was time for my business identity to change. Shortly after that I decided to transform myself and my brand into the Wordsy Woman.

When I’m not writing or running my business, I enjoy walking my beagle, Maizey, and hiking. I also like to travel when I can away from my home in Davenport, Iowa, where I live with my husband, daughter, son, cat, and said beagle.

  15. Those Who Remain by Priscila Santa Rosa

ThoseWhoRemain_BookOne_V3About Those Who Remain by Priscila Santa Rosa:

Hide your children, lock your doors, and load your guns because zombies are real and they are coming. Danny Terrence knows this better than anyone. He spent months preparing for the inevitable moment the disease would reach his small town. What he didn’t prepare for is the fact that nobody really believes him.

Luckily for him, an old classmate and bully just happens to be the first one bitten. The bad news is that the family with the biggest arsenal of guns just packed up and left town, leaving them defenseless from an oncoming zombie horde. Being a leader isn’t turning out the way Danny imagined.

Yet four other survivors easily have it worse than him. Between a thirteen-year-old girl on a road trip from hell, a family of paranoid hunters having to deal with their feelings for the first time ever, a stubborn doctor butting-heads with a cold-hearted sergeant and an amoral British professor carrying the fate of humanity in his hands, Danny has it easy. Unless, of course, they all end up in his town, messing with his already messed up life.

Follow these five people as their paths cross and their lives and hopes are challenged in this thrilling novel with brain-mushing humor and heart-breaking action. Those Who Remain: Book One is part of a trilogy.

Vegas Pursuit, a follow up to the first in the series (Cupid’s Pursuit) is such a book – light and fun following its central character on a big adventure to celebrate a big birthday where once more fate conspires to make life anything but straightforward!

I am a great believer in keeping the radar focussed on simple, everyday situations in life where even the most innocuous incidents can contain humour. It’s all good material!

  17. Borrowed Bibles by Jim Good

Borrowed-Bibles-Front-CoverAbout Borrowed Bibles by Jim Good:

It was during the 1940s in Arkansas when the very young Jim Good first learned from his father’s sermons that drinking Coke was a sin, but drinking Royal Crown was not. He also learned not to lie, to keep the Commandments, to love Jesus, and that God wanted segregation. By the age of twenty, he had moved thirty-one times and attended thirteen schools.

In his compelling memoir, Good shares the heartfelt story of what it was like to grow up with a nomadic teacher father who borrowed Bibles from churches so he could conduct services on the front porch. With the goal of seeking income and respect, Good’s father moved the family more than once a year—from segregated Arkansas to integrated Washington and Oregon and back to segregated Arkansas, filling his son’s life with culture shock. As he embarked on the challenging path to adulthood, Good began to question everything about God, soon realizing that the only way to find the truth was to become a preacher himself. And, at the end of his questioning, we discover with Jim the place where the questions disappear, and all that remains is unfocused love.
