   Writing about my experiences has shown me, again and again, that we are not alone in the world. Especially in the ugly places of our hearts. Every time I open myself up and share, a greater understanding goes out into the world.

   I saw you. I heard you. I feel you. I’ve been there and I get it.

   I’m Suanne Laqueur and I’m a word alchemist and story artisan. My drugs of choice are attention, stimulation, connection and starvation. I’m at my best when I’m slightly hungry and being flirted with. I’m obsessed with passion and vulnerability – and naps and coffee (though not at the same time). I adore cashmere, the beach and the ballet. But the best thing is when someone says, “You said something to me today and I connected with it.”

   I’ve been buddies with anxiety and depression my whole life. My first panic attack came in fourth grade, at the optometrist. They continued to arrive without warning and for no reason (so it seemed) ever since. I struggled through them for decades, thinking I was the only one in the world. I never got help. I figured it was just something I had to deal with.

   Then I had my kids. Severe post-partum depression convinced me I couldn’t just tough it out. Lives depended on me. So I went on antidepressants and into therapy and started down a long road of picking myself apart.

   It sucked and it was awesome.

   How did I get through all of it? I just did. I had to. I knew I would. It’s hard to articulate how, but I think a lot of it was just acceptance. This is happening. This is not forever. This is not everything you are. This is just a thing. And you’ll get through it. In a way, it’s your finest hour.

   I started talking about the anxiety and depression more. Making it ordinary. And I found out that so many other women struggled as I did. But the best part was the look of relief and gratitude in their eyes. They’d clutched my arm and say, “Oh my God, me too…”

   Then I started to believe I could have anxiety and depression AND be a functioning human. As in, I’m having a slight panic attack AND I am making dinner. It didn’t stop me anymore.

   I didn’t write much during this time. I had no time. And I had no…ideas.

   When I finally sat down to tell my story two years ago, I asked myself: what can I write about? And by November 2013, I knew it was unfinished business and un-grieved grief. The effects of trauma. How the brain suppresses but does not forget. About feeling it and coming out the other side. About living the truth of who you are and what you feel.

   I made a vow that 2014 was going to be the year I finished my story and put it out there, and this past June, “The Man I Love” was born.

   I have a story and a gift to tell it.

   I wrote this, but a piece of you is in it. You helped make this. You may think that was a throwaway moment but it wasn’t. You may think you’re ordinary, but you are not.
