- No More Mulberries by Mary Smith
About No More Mulberries by Mary Smith:Set in Afghanistan, No More Mulberries is the story of Scottish-born Miriam and her Afghan husband Dr Iqbal. Miriam loves her work at a rural health clinic in Afghanistan but is aware of cracks appearing in her marriage, though she doesn’t know what is going wrong – only that her husband seems to be changing and is no longer the man she married.
When, against Iqbal’s wishes, Miriam agrees to act as translator at a medical teaching camp she hopes time apart might help her understand the cause of their problems. An old friend appears at the camp, inviting her to visit the village where she once lived. Miriam finds herself travelling on a journey into her past where she must face up to the traumatic loss of her first husband, killed by a mujahideen group.
When she realises it is partly her own behaviour which has damaged her relationship with Iqbal, Miriam resolves to put things right between them – but is she too late? Will Iqbal still want her, or will the return of his first love, a beautiful Afghan girl now a widow, mean he no longer cares for Miriam? No More Mulberries is a novel about loss, divided loyalties and love. As well as a powerful story it offers an intriguing and authentic insight into daily life in rural Afghanistan.

I am a writer from Scotland. I was born on the island of Islay (lots of whisky distilleries) and now live in the south west of Scotland. In the intervening years I’ve lived and worked in England, Pakistan and Afghanistan.I write fiction, non-fiction and poetry and also work as a freelance journalist writing features on a variety of topics from local history to the arts.
In Pakistan I worked at the leprosy centre in Karachi where my job was to set up a health education department to help get out the message that leprosy is curable. During my time there I met a number of Afghan students training as paramedics and was persuaded to help them with their English. This involved lots of conversation – on picnics, visits to the funfair, to the beach and on explorations of this amazing city, as foreign to the Afghan students as to me. They talked endlessly about their country with great passion and a longing to return to work for their people. By the time my contract ended it was inevitable I would sign up again – this time to work in Afghanistan.
Part of my life in Afghanistan was spent in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and partly in Hazara Jat (or Hazirastan) where I spent months at a time working with women and children; often my three-year-old son was the only English speaker in the area.
My experiences have informed my writing to a great extent, mainly, I think, because I wanted to share with others what life is like in rural Afghanistan away from the media headlines, the bullets and the politics.

- The Darkening Light.
In the spring of 1986 nine young punks travelled from Swindon to Wood Green in a beat up old van, to see atavistic, eat shit, heresy and others blow the socks off the London borough of Harringey. In the 24 hours that followed their lives would be forever changed. What was going to happen? Would it be the vegan revolution? A declaration of world peace? Or something more sinister? This cavort through the anarcho punk and hardcore scene of the mid 1980s pulls no punches. From the very first page, once you start reading this coruscating tale you won’t be able to stop, and by the time you finish your life will be changed too. If you think you were there, you weren’t. Whatever you think happened, whatever you remember, this wasn’t it. This is something else entirely, a perfect snapshot, a disheveled stream of consciousness yielding a surprisingly moving and unabridged account of blackouts, nightmare bogs, and hardcore corrosion. It is an invaluable addition to the canon. Chaos with a heart.

Ted Curtis is an up and coming writer working in all fields, but not advertising. He is currently working on a novella about a metal box, a play about the sexual abuse of environmental protestors by undercover police officers, and a collection of short stories set in Swindon in the 1980s. During the 1990s he had some success in the small press, and even with Serpents Tail, but decided to concentrate on his drinking instead. He was very good at it too. Now he’s back. The Darkening Light. is a post from Awesome Gang

- Phytoceramides: Anti-Aging at its Best
About Phytoceramides: Anti-Aging at its Best:Phytoceramides are an essential anti-aging tool – and relatively new in the U.S. They have been used in Japan for more than a decade, and more recently in Europe. Learn all about why you should consider Phytoceramides today.
The purpose of this book is to clarify how Phytoceramides could benefit your skin and well-being, and sort out the facts you need to know. Keeping skin healthy as we age involves more than just cosmetic issues – some serious health issues are also involved, as you will learn.
I have attempted to keep the technical scientific talk to a minimum, and stick with a tone that is easy to read.
I am not a dermatologist or doctor, nor a scientist or clinician. I own a skin care company, Sublime Beauty®, which focuses on aging and ways to obtain healthier skin. I am immersed in skincare issues, and surrounded by chemists, dermatologists, researchers and an abundance of common sense.
I was very excited when Phytoceramides came along, as I believe it can become an important aid to my clients and friends. I did the research, and then started taking one a day myself. After seeing results in less than 5 weeks, I was sure this was something my clients would love and have just added them to my line at this writing. (I am in my late 50s and “in the thick” of aging skin issue; I test and use all Sublime Beauty® products.)
While working on a larger book about overall skin care, I felt that it was the right time to bring out a short book on Phytoceramides now. I hope you enjoy it, and I encourage any questions or comments.
