About A Myth to the Night – Part I by Cora Choi:A Myth to the Night is a story about a phantom, named Hugh, who is haunting an island that serves as the campus of an elite university. When several students disappear he is blamed. However, Hugh is innocent.
Hugh befriends a student on the island and together they try to uncover the truth about the missing students. The journey leads them to discover the corruption not only within the school but among the powers that control society.
A Myth to the Night is a contemporary YA Fantasy but includes many motifs found in ancient myths and legends. I had originally planned for it to be a graphic novel but found that the drawings couldn’t express the deeper emotions that were the essence of my characters — the narrator especially.
I wrote the original story in five parts and decided to publish it that way. The first part is offered for free on Amazon. If you’re a visual person, I suggest checking out some of the drawings that I did for the story on Facebook and the website: www.staurosisland.com.
As for the title, well, I’m a huge fan of Novalis’ Hymns to the Night. The title was in homage to Novalis and German Romanticism.

About Dax Dugan and the Graveyard Gang:Leaving the only home you’ve ever known and moving to a new town would be a little unnerving for any kid. Imagine moving to a new town and finding out that your closest neighbors are no longer among the living.
That’s what happens to 12-year-old Dax Dugan and his 9-year-old sister, Callie, when their mom’s new job forces the whole family to leave the bustling city of Chicago and move to a quiet, rural town in Southern Illinois.
Dax and Callie’s parents tell them quite a bit about their new home before they ever leave Chicago. Unfortunately, the fact that there is a cemetery in their backyard is one piece of information they neglect to share.
Dax and Callie meet a neighbor named Jamal, who tells them about strange things that happened to the family who lived in their house before them. Dax is skeptical, until he sees a shadowy figure at the edge of the cemetery. As much as he doesn’t want to believe in ghosts, he can’t explain it away. He decides the only way to have any peace in his new home is to learn all he can about the cemetery and the people buried there.
The kids start doing research and find out that approximately 30 people, both military and civilian, were buried there between 1865 and 1921. The town stopped using the cemetery after grave robbers vandalized it, stealing cherished possessions from the dead and leaving the graves exposed and tombstones overturned.
The townspeople filled in the graves and fixed the tombstones, but they were never able to find the stolen treasures. Some people believe that the robbers dropped several of the valuables in the woods behind the cemetery. Two of the robbers were captured and hung, but the third was never found.
Local legend says that every night since then, the dead have walked the woods in search of their stolen treasures. Callie decides they should get some other kids together and form a club to help find the stolen loot and return it to the spirits. She comes up with the name, The Graveyard Gang, and with the help of a boy named Wiley and a girl named Maria, their quest begins.
The gang is able to summon a spirit named Sam. They find out that Sam was a Civil War soldier who had a service dog named Sarge. They were both killed in battle on the same day. Sam’s fellow soldiers requested that Sarge be buried next to Sam, but their request was denied, so they snuck Sarge’s dog tags into Sam’s casket before he was buried.
The kids quickly realize that Sarge’s dog tags mean more than anything to Sam, and that he won’t be at peace until he has them back. Sam is friendly, but a little impatient. The closer the kids get to finding Sarge’s dog tags, the more rambunctious he gets.
After months of searching, Dax and the gang decide that maybe their luck would improve if they tried a nighttime search. They gather their flashlights and head off into the woods. It’s obvious they’re on the right trail, when an angry wind begins to swirl around them and a voice rings out through the woods, “Get out!”
They take off running and Wiley falls into a well that’s covered with underbrush. In the bottom of the well, lies the third grave robber, along with Sarge’s dog tags and the other stolen treasures. Dax and the others manage to get Wiley out of the well and barely make it out of the woods without being attacked by the grave robber’s ghost.
The next day, the gang goes to the cemetery to return Sarge’s tags to Sam. Dax places the tags on Sam’s tombstone and with a bolt of lightning and a roar of thunder, Sam receives his precious treasure, and is finally able to rest in peace.
