  2. The Boy Who Loved Fire by Julie Musil

He and his friends party in the mountains on a blustery night, sharing liquor and lame ghost stories around a campfire. Within hours, he becomes the number one arson suspect.

Santa Ana winds + matches = disaster. You’d think he would’ve learned that the first time he started a fire.

As he evades a determined arson investigator, Manny, a modern-day Scrooge, is visited by ghosts of the past, present, and future. He’s forced to witness the fate of his inadvertent victims, including Abigail, the scarred beauty who softens his heart. Author Bio:
Julie Musil writes Young Adult novels from her rural home in Southern California, where she lives with her husband and three sons. She’s an obsessive reader who loves stories that grab the heart and won’t let go.

Musil’s book, The Boy Who Loved Fire, has gained impressive reviews including this five-star review from a reader: “What an amazing story to illustrate how the effect of a split-second decision can adversely affect those around us. “The boy who loved FIRE” is deftly written from the point of view of an egocentric, teenaged main character, Manny. Sheltered by well-meaning parents, Manny finally learns the truth about an incident from his youth, through surreal spirits reminiscent of Dickens, and struggles to repair the damages of the past, and prevent any further harm. Musil so accurately describes a wildfire, through her descriptive sights, smells, sounds and feelings. Having lived in wildfire country most of my life, I’ve been there and was taken back with every word. Read this book and recommend it to your friends. We can all use a reminder of the lessons illustrated here.

  4. Refuge by Judy Griffith Gill

Refuge2About Refuge by Judy Griffith Gill:

In the beginning, the inhabitants of the seven sleep-ships arrived on schedule in orbit around Magnus,in the distant reaches of The Milky Way. They awoke from a thousand years’ freeze to learn they’d been drawn to a landing they hadn’t wanted on a planet not of their choice. There, all electronics failed. Worse the first explorers to step foot on ground were overcome by an inescapable sexual frenzy. Many died of over exertion and starvation before those in protective suits could capture and return them to the the safety of stasis. The scientists eventually developed a libido suppressant and the settlers went about creating a new home for themselves. As protection against vicious avians which descended from above, they constructed a wire mesh over their complex of ships. To their amazement, the web permitted electronics to function again–communications between personal com devices worked, computer programs and records in the ships could be maintained, and weapons reactivated–as long as they were under the web. But more native species than could be controlled with impulse weapons attacked on the ground. These were blocked a thick, fast-growing shrub planted as hedges that kept out all but the smallest marauders. Still, the planet needed to be tamed, to be made habitable and rid of animals and vegetation harmful to humans–everything considered unearthly must go or be rigorously controlled.Exploration parties, work groups, hunters, miners, foresters, botanists went to work providing supplements to what the ships carried. For nearly 300 Earthyears, despite the need to retire to sleep-cells for the year-long Wintersleep required to survive the dark and cold, all went well until the cryogenic chambers containing the zygotes from Earth failed.

Without those new humans quickened and grown in the cryo-chambers for nine months before being set to further develop in Auto Lactation Chambers, civilization would be doomed. The only solution was to temporarily lift the libido suppressant and restore fertility. The reluctant women who became pregnant during the “Sennit of Sex” grew their “zygotes” within their own bodies and were delivered of their burdens early in Wintersleep. Servos inserted the infants into the ALCs, to be decanted in the spring-year.

This sufficed as a solution to the problem of keeping a viable civilization going until odd things began to happen…

    Prologue:

An excited child-care physician rushed to the office of the Chief of Committee. “Chief, good news! One of the children of the first human gestation can fly!”

Thanilla, Chief of Committee, studied the zip of small boy as he flitted over the dry grass and frost blackened gardens like a bird. “Humans cannot fly,” she stated categorically. “Children cannot fly, especially without wings.”

“But, respects, Chief, as you can see for yourself,” the physician said. “He can fly. He does fly. This is an amazing genetic development! I believe it might be an effect of his being born on this planet of a human mother, and not hatched from an ages old-zygote.”

Thanilla stared longer as the child, laughing with glee, ascended toward the protective web over Complex then, reluctant but obedient, returned to his attendants when called. After a few ticks, Chief Thanilla turned resolutely away. “That child,” she declared, “is not Earthly. Terminate it.”

The physician begged for time to study the child, but Thanilla remained adamant. When others awakened in spring, neither the physician nor the child were among them.

    Author Bio:
Judy Griffith Gill has been writing (and published) since the age of 29. She’s a lot older than that now. She started with Sweet Romance, moved on to Spicy Romance—which she would not let her two daughters read until they were at least thirty—then Fantasy and Futuristic Romance, and even one Erotic Romance .She still doesn’t want her daughters reading that one. Then came a well-received Women’s Fiction novel, Joanna—Jinxed, which is not a romance, but does have a love interest. It’s more the story of mothers and daughters. Those Fantasy and Futuristic books, along with a life-time of reading SF (Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction come under that abbreviation) she began a series called The Chronicles of Storn. After a lot of false starts and a gazillion rewrites, REFUGE, Book One in the Chronicles is now available and up on Kindle, B&N, iTunes and Kobo. The book recently garnered two Five Star reviews, on Kindle, which is repeated on Goodreads. Book Two, The Dirtsiders, is well underway.

Nearly all of Judy’s backlist is in digital format on Open Roads Media where you can download your favorite format, including audio. The rest of it is now out on Kindle and other digital stores.

Writing is more than a job to her—it’s a way of life. If a day goes by when she doesn’t have a chance to write, she gets downright cranky which isn’t much fun for her husband because they live in tight quarters. From October through March, they call their Little House in the Jungle home, all 1000 sq. ft. of it. It’s located in Costa Rica, on the Caribbean side, halfway between Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Life in the tropics is pretty laid back. Judy says, “What are hammocks for? Besides, it’s usually too hot to do anything but that or play in the surf on Cahuita National Park’s surprisingly uncrowded beaches, or Puerto Viejos’s Playa Negra. Now and then, lifting the Piña Colada or Margarita glass might be required, that’s just one of the things a writer must put up with.”

From April through September, they live on a 34′ cabin cruiser on the south coast of BC, in Canada. Life on board is a constant round of exercise such as searching out secluded coves where they can anchor the boat, La Niña, then drift around on pool noodles, snorkel along the shores, or paddle in their inflatable kayaks. Occasionally reeling in a ling-cod or lifting a trap full of Dungeness crabs provides even more strenuous exercise, as does clam-digging or oyster-shucking. Oh! and then there’s pulling in the prawn trap. Sigh! Living off the ocean’s bounty can be tough. Apart from those stressful activities, Judy says, “I’m afraid to retire because if I do, my husband might think I should share in the grocery shopping, laundry, coffee-making and all that tiresome stuff like pulling up 300 feet of prawn line then beheading the prawns. My task is to cook and eat them.” She has, on occasion, pulled up the crab traps from 20 or 30 feet of water, but poor Bob is responsible for killing them, too. She goes on to say, “I will not put a living creature into boiling water.” He’s also responsible for catching and filleting the fish, though since it’s activity she likes, Judy does dig clams and makes an incredible chowder.

If you want the recipe, or the one for Ginger-Curry Crab Cakes, contact her at judyashore@gmail.com. She likes hearing from readers, though may not answer immediately. Some of those secluded coves don’t have Internet service. Neither do all the Costa Rican beaches.
