The influenza pandemic of 2010, while not nearly as prolific as the one that raged in 1918 still has citizens around the world in a near state of panic.

There would be no more headlines.
It started in a lab at the CDC (Center for Disease Control), virologists were so relieved to finally have an effective vaccination against the virulent swine flu. Pressure to come up with something had come from the highest office in the land. In an attempt at speed the virologists had made two mistakes, first they used a live virus and second they didn’t properly test for side effects. Within days hundreds of thousands of vaccinations shipped across the US and the world. People lined up for the shots, like they were waiting in line for concert tickets. Fights broke out in drugstores as fearful throngs tried their best to get one of the limited shots. Within days the CDC knew something was wrong. Between 4 and 7 hours of receiving the shot roughly 95% succumbed to the active H1N1 virus in the vaccination. More unfortunate than the death of the infected was the added side effect of reanimation, it would be a decade before scientists were able to ascertain how that happened. The panic that followed couldn’t be measured. Loved ones did what loved ones always do, they tried to comfort, their kids or their spouses or their siblings, but what came back was not human not even remotely. Those people that survived their first encounter with these monstrosities usually did not come through unscathed, if bitten they had fewer than 6 hours of humanity left, the clock was ticking. During the first few hysteria ridden days of The Coming as it has become known, many thought the virus was airborne, luckily that was not the case or nobody would have survived. It was a dark time in human history. One from which we may never be able to pull ourselves out of the ashes from.

OK I admit it. I write stories about bush animals learning music.The ideas came from teaching children about the joys of music, and when I told them fun stories about animals learning music, they thought this was ‘cool!’
Last year was such a special year in which I stepped over the line from class room teacher and musician, replacing hectic with glam pyjamas, coffee, breakfast, dog training and looking after our small farm with its variety of fun farm animals, to become an author of stories and books for children’s music education.
Music is such a rich experience and everyone should know as much about music as they can. But music theory can be so complicated.
Our books and stories written for Music on the Bookshelf have been developed to provide storybooks about music for young children, and chapter books for primary age children. [In print, EBook and audio book formats.]
The engaging stories encourage discussion about why music makes us feel so good, giving all students the opportunity to enrich their lives through the understanding of music and musical instruments.

I have enjoyed playing flute in productions ranging from Musical Comedy to Savoy Operas, Arts Theatre Children’s productions and Concert Society Orchestras. Any other spare moments, musically speaking, were involved with friends playing in the musical ensembles, for weddings and private functions.

I began writing soon after learning to hold a pencil—or possibly a crayon—but it wasn’t until my four children were older ( and learned to forage for their own food) when I began indulging my true passion.By day, I teach literary analysis and writing in the International Baccalaureate program. Nights and weekends you’ll find me glued to the laptop—spoiled pooch at my side—crafting my next novel or writing a blog.
I have a weakness for a nice glass of wine, good chocolate, ice cream, and cheese, and cupcakes, and…um well, you get the point. Exercise? Not so much. The treadmill sits in the garage where I manage to climb aboard a few times a week and attempt to catch up on what everybody else is talking about.
Folks ask about my inspiration for the Merkabah Series. That’s an easy question to answer! I’ve always been amazed by the links between ancient history and mythology. The two are so closely intertwined we don’t often make a distinction between them. And modern scientific theories only continue to prove the existence of the weird and fantastical!
