Where Awesome Book Readers Meet Awesome Writers

  1. Into a Strange Land

    About Into a Strange Land:

The McGunnegals are all strange, and it has been that way for generations. They are too strong, or too fast, or too smart, and odd things happened when they are around.

The neighbors say they are witches or devils, or have been snatched by changelings. Mothers hold their children close when they walk by, fearing they might catch the McGunnegal strangeness.

But misfortune besets them when their mother, Ellie, disappears, followed by their crazy grandfather, but not before he reveals a family secret to Colleen and Frederick – a secret that reveals the source of their strangeness, and also threatens to cast the dark shadow of famine on Ireland. He has opened a portal to the world of the Others, where their mother has gone, and a dark creature – a goblin – has come in her place and is spreading death and disease.

They fall through this portal, and find this strange land filled with dark creatures that are crushing its people and now threaten to come through the portal and take up their abode in the world of Men, as they once did long ago.

Yet in this dark world of oppression, this poor family discovers who they are, and also what it means to be truly human.

She teams up with local private-eye Yossi Luria and the two quickly realize that the old mystery is lethal and still claiming victims. Their quest takes them back into the Holy Land’s history, through the Napoleonic era and the Crusades, right into the origins of Christianity and of Kabbalah – the Jewish mystical tradition. What is this old secret that people in the 21st century are ready to kill for? It turns out to be startlingly more profound than a family mystery.

  5. The Shell of a Person by Lance Pototschnik

imageedit_12_5076555892About The Shell of a Person by Lance Pototschnik:

“Never have disgusting, miserable living conditions been so funny. When someone finally finds a way to send back a report from hell, I hope it will be Lance Pototschnik. Except this guy is going to heaven, for the way he writes.” –The Kindle Book Review

Only zebras and idiots get eaten by crocodiles, and here he was. As Lance waded across that river with his bag over his head, he could envision it perfectly. Someone at the local paper would get the story. It would go like this:

“Three young Americans went missing in Costa Rica on Monday. Ivy Tronne and Lance Pototschnik of Maryland, and Wade Dignon of Pennsylvania, are believed to have been killed by crocodiles while crossing a river to a secluded sea turtle refuge at a beach called Buena Vista, which lies on a peninsula that pokes down like a fang from the Guanacaste province into the Pacific Ocean. All three victims were twenty-five or nearly so. Wade was a part-time personal trainer at a small health club; Ivy was a waitress, and Lance, a man susceptible to improvement in almost every aspect of his character, was a substitute teacher and a promotional mascot. They went to Costa Rica because a Google search turned up a one-month stay at the turtle rescue, bed and board included, for $109. It turned out to be a deal only for the crocodiles, which were unavailable for comment.”

But that article would be wrong. They survived. And this was no simple vacation. This was a pilgrimage, a spirit-journey. Lance and his friends did not come to Costa Rica to rescue baby turtles. They came to get control of their lives, to find direction and purpose. Instead, they find chaos and danger. Yet, through the pulling riptides, the snapping crocodiles, the charging bulls, the snakes, the raging fire ants, the combined horrors of the wild jungle and the massive ocean, Lance will have his answers, and you will too. Prepare to travel with him.

This is the memoir for an unsettled generation. Through his own story, Lance Pototschnik offers the questions of the brooding, the concerns of the anxious and the hopes of the hopeless in a witty voice that won’t shame them. The Shell of a Person is one of the best books written by an emerging author this year.

Learn more about the author, buy the book, or follow them on social media:
    Buy the Book On Amazon.

    Author Bio:
Lance Pototschnik grew up in rural Frederick county, Maryland, in a small house surrounded by farms. The last of his parents’ eight children, he spent the healthiest times of his childhood following his brothers up creeks and through woods, scrounging for turtles, toads and snakes. However, born with severe allergies and a chronic autoimmune disorder, Pototschnik was often confined to the house, where he sat alongside his mother and learned to draw and paint. As a sick child born at the back of a large family, life positioned Pototschnik as an observer, and he capitalized on that station through writing.

He went on to study English at McDaniel College. In his early twenties, he competed as an amateur powerlifter, and once held two world records. He is an ardent, impetuous traveler. Today, he lives in Singapore and writes. His first works are humorous memoirs that highlight the struggles young people face as they attempt to reconcile their dreams with the reality of a world they are unprepared to face. The Shell of a Person was touted as one of the best works by an emerging author in 2013 by the Chanticleer Book Review.

    Author Bio:
My name is Daniel and I’m 33 years old. I’ve always considered myself a moral person and I lived for many years with an internal dissonance – The desire for animal products, collided with the heavy ethical baggage eating them brought.

But at the age of 28 I decided to change. It was after I spent 6 days in a meditation course (Vipassana) which is held in complete silence that I declared: – “That’s it, I’m a vegan!”

When I came back from Vipassana I was troubled. I had no idea what to eat Because my knowledge about vegan cooking was very poor. So I decided to contact members of our worldwide community through forums. I asked for recipes and tips and the response was amazing! I decided to leverage my passion for food and find the ultimate solutions to our community by writing a vegan cookbook.

My vision was to write a series of cookbooks which contain vegan recipes and distribute them to as many people as possible. Each book focuses on one type of food and shows that there are dozens of ways to prepare food that contain only natural products. These books incorporate original recipes and are especially devoted to our wonderful community to enjoy and distribute them.

Here I also urge you – if you have a winning recipe – you are welcome to send it to me along with your picture and the picture of the recipe, and I promise to publish it in my next books. Even if you do not have a recipe, you are invited to share with me your ideas and thoughts.

For a much more harmonious, peaceful, balanced and sane life
    Daniel
