Themes of Jewish mysticism were also presented, which I enjoyed and found fascinating. It’s an intelligent exploration of religious ideals, and how these fit into our culture.

   O’Malley is what really holds the piece together, though. A character with deep complexity, he is pained by a sad childhood, but driven to conquer (literal) demons. He was a fun person to spend a book with!

   As an aside, the author describes some of his influences, which provided great perspective. I can definitely see the inspiration of Welles and Poe in this novel. It was a great read, and I look forward to checking out more of Musgrave’s work.”
