Where Awesome Book Readers Meet Awesome Writers

  1. Saving Ben by Ashley Farley

SavingBen-Cover-for-SmashwordsAbout Saving Ben by Ashley Farley:

A boy, his sister, and her psychopathic roommate.

When Katherine Langley’s roommate, Emma, disappears from a house party on New Year’s Day, the only evidence left is a single set of footprints in the snow leading down to a deserted dock.

Flashback sixteen months to Katherine’s first day at the University of Virginia when life is sweet. She is finally free from the drama of her parents’ dysfunctional marriage and ready to focus on studying to become a nurse. Her brother, Ben, belongs to the hottest fraternity on campus, and her new roommate, Emma, is beautiful and charming, a party girl whose answer for a hangover is happy hour. She is also a psychopath. When Katherine’s obsessive-compulsive overprotective brother succumbs to Emma’s charms and falls dangerously off-track, Katherine must save Ben from himself.

From the University of Virginia campus to a cozy cottage on Carter’s Creek, Saving Ben is a haunting tale of love and loyalty, anger management, substance abuse, and betrayal.

“This beautifully designed book might have come from any of the biggest publishing houses and sit shoulder to shoulder with some of the best LOOKING books to be released this year . . .The writing is exceptional and the story compelling with an emotional resonance that demonstrates a maturity to the writing that makes Ashley Farley an author to watch.”— Judge, Writer’s Digest 21st Annual Self-Published Book Awards

    Author Bio:
I’m a wife and mother of two teenagers. I grew up in the salty marshes of South Carolina, but I have lived in Richmond, Virginia, for seventeen years, a city I love for its history and traditions. Aside from being with my family, the greatest pleasure in my life is to escape into the world of fiction.

My brother, Neal, died of an accidental overdose in 1999 at the age of 37. He touched the lives of many with his wonderful sense of humor, his infectious laugh, and his tortured soul. From the minute I learned of his death, I knew I would spend my life making sure his memory lived on. He would want me to reach out to others, to help them avoid the demons that cost him his life.

For many years, I chaired education committees at my son’s school to promote alcohol and drug awareness to parents. I also chaired a series of leadership symposia where we brought in world-renowned speakers to empower students to become better leaders through honor and integrity and character. But it wasn’t enough. I envisioned myself counseling groups of students about the dangers of alcohol and drug use. I wanted to tell anyone willing to listen how substance abuse and mental illness destroys families. But even years after his death, every time I tried to talk to others about Neal, my voice would shake and my eyes would fill with tears.

So I turned to writing. I wrote Saving Ben in honor of Neal, the boy I worshipped, the man I could not save. It’s not a memoir, but a story about the special bond between siblings.

  2. The Keeper

    keepercover2About The Keeper:

Caitlin Rosenberry is an unassuming young waitress, who, due to a sudden traumatic shock suffered a stroke in her early twenties. Now almost mended, she returns to her doctor for a follow-up visit. Fortuitously, her physician is out and his replacement is the striking Dr. Chris Seacrest, neurosurgeon par excellence and chief of staff of the medical center. Their first encounter does not go well when, much to the shock of the indisputable Dr. Seacrest, she kindly refuses his medical advice.

Although they both gratefully assume they’ve seen the last of each other, their paths are destined to soon cross again… and again. Coincidentally, CEO of the medical center, Danny Creighton, has previously taken a secret liking to the unusual Caitlin after repeatedly dining at the natural foods restaurant where she works. He plans to ask her out, but his best friend and associate Dr. Seacrest finds himself inexplicably drawn to Caitlin for his own reasons and uncharacteristically asks her to accompany him to a medical presentation.

Caitlin begins cautiously dating the doctor but her environmentally-conscious, New Age inspired group of friends immediately mistrusts the immensely affluent, successful doctor. In addition, best friend Danny is outraged over the betrayal when he discovers Chris has been keeping his relationship with Caitlin a secret, and they quickly find themselves at odds.

Although Caitlin finds herself increasingly attracted to the doctor, she begins to experience serious doubts and after a disastrous visit to his wealthy family, decides to break off the relationship. Fate has already long since intervened, however, and the breakup fatefully sets a series of cataclysmic events into motion from which there is no turning back. In the midst of it all, the emotionally inaccessible Dr. Seacrest finds himself deeply in love with Caitlin, yet she never wants to see him again.

Once the town bad boy, Blake is now a prominent shipbuilder dedicated to helping local teens. Vanessa Grant has over 10 million books sold worldwide.

Says Vanessa, “I love writing fiction – it’s the perfect occupation for someone who can’t decide what they want to be when they grow up. With each new story, I get to explore a new world.”

Vanessa Grant’s love affair with writing fiction began at the age of 12 when she decided to write a novel of her own, sitting up in bed using the typewriter she’d been given for her birthday. Not a computer, not an electric typewriter, but a then-state-of-the-art manual typewriter. The story ground to a halt on page 50 but Vanessa never forgot the excitement of bringing her own characters to life.

In 1985 Vanessa’s novel Pacific Disturbance was published in hardcover by Mills and Boon. She now has over 10 million books sold and has been translated into 15 languages. She also has written what one critic described as, “by far the best writing book I’ve ever read.” Writing Romance, published by Self Counsel Press, won the Under the Covers Best Writing Book Award, and is currently in its third edition.

Over the years her love of storytelling and curiosity about people led Vanessa to study psychology, volunteer on a crisis line, complete individual and relationship counselor training, volunteer as a peer counselor for a family life organization, and tell stories about life, love, and secrets. Vanessa has also worked as a university professor, a publisher of educational materials and eBooks, and has given workshops to writers’ groups in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada.

Vanessa and her husband live on Vancouver Island in the Pacific Northwest with their two Australian Shepherd dogs.

    Author Bio:
Though she was born in Germany and raised in Turkey until the age of five, Emilyann Girdner spent the majority of her grade school years in Tallahassee, Florida. She discovered early she had a love for stories. Reading books, watching movies and then acting them out with friends or toys gave living an extra flavor. This is likely why she spent the first part of her college career studying Creative Writing, before switching to Graphic Design and then graduating with a BFA in Digital Art (2012) from Missouri State University. She’s now living and working in Florida.

Given her three focus transitions as an undergraduate, it isn’t a shock that she is a multi-medium lover, exploring writing, digital art, photography and design. She finds that her creativity is most fluent when given the opportunity to bounce between artistic outlets.
