Where Awesome Book Readers Meet Awesome Writers

  1. The Knightmare by Deborah Valentine

Deborah Valentine is a British author, editor and screenwriter who once lived in California but far preferred the British weather and fled to London, where she has resided for many years. Her crime novels feature former California Sheriff Kevin Bryce and his artist girlfriend Katharine Craig, charting their turbulent romance among murder and mayhem. With their engaging yet complex characterisations, they push the boundaries of the conventional mystery. Unorthodox Methods was the first in the series, followed by A Collector of Photographs and the Ireland-based Fine Distinctions. A Collector of Photographs was short-listed for an Edgar Allan Poe, a Shamus, a Macavity and an Anthony Boucher award. Fine Distinctions was also short-listed for an Edgar. First published by Victor Gollancz in the UK and Bantam and Avon in the US, they are soon to be available as eBooks on Orion's The Murder Room imprint. In addition to the Kevin Bryce series she has been the editor of a number of niche-market journals and is a prolific writer of articles, screenplays and a new series of novels with a supernatural theme, of which The Knightmare is the first.

  3. The Dream Catcher by Julia Rose Grey

Julia Rose Grey pestered her mother to learn to read and, shortly after, began jotting down her thoughts to clarify the world’s contradictions. She soon developed a taste for fiction, biographies, and history and starting writing her own stories in elementary school. In college, she discovered she had a talent for writing term papers and, although she insisted others write their own papers, she often helped people develop their themes. She knew few shared her unique skill: given a topic and a few hours of research, she could whip up a twenty-page paper in an afternoon. With a degree under her belt, Ms. Grey bundled this writing ability into a briefcase and leveraged it into a career replete with documentary, expository, and persuasive writing. Since retiring a few years ago, however, she has returned to spinning fictional yarns. She writes situational comedy plays for a local amateur playwriting and performing group. Her first novel, Cry Before Supper, was published in 2012 and her whimsical holiday novella, The Dream Catcher, was published a year later. Ever busy, writing plays and short stories, holding workshops and coaching sessions, and blogging for a local independent bookstore, she manages to find time to dedicate early mornings to her second novel, which is due out in 2014. She writes against the backdrop of the past and calls her style Vintage Elegance. “I’m stuck in the past,” she says. “I love fragile, exquisite charm, from the crystal of the 1890s to pillbox hats and Monet jewelry of the early 1960s.” These historical story settings are deceiving, she admits, because her themes are about resilience, perseverance, and good overcoming evil.

  7. Lazar’s Mission by Kevin Sterling

A first generation American born to a European family, Kevin Sterling writes from a rich perspective on relationships, culture and sensuality to create characters with uncommon depth and appealing vulnerability. Combine that with a history of world travel and a successful former business career in structured finance, and it’s easy to see how his books resonate with authentic situations, engaging conflict, and stimulating eroticism. Then there’s the lighter side of the man, who can do a killer impression of Sean Connery (amongst other famous personalities) and thinks everyone wants to hear his never-ending repertoire of corny jokes. That has yet to be proven, of course, so readers should be thankful he has one of the best editors in the industry (Mary Moran) to keep that under control. Sterling and his wife travel extensively and live at their mountain ranch in Colorado with their Golden Retriever, Shelby.

  12. The Bridge To Caracas

Born, raised and educated in Canada, Stephen spent the first half of his career working for the two largest oil companies in the world: Exxon and royal Dutch Shell. He spent the second half working for one of the smallest oil companies in the world; his own. He has three sons and one daughter, all of whom are grown and “off the payroll”. Now retired, he spends his summers with his wife, Ann, and their two cats, Abby and Samantha, at their Canadian home near Niagara Falls. They winter at their Florida home in Port St. Lucie. When he is not writing, he is reading, traveling, or playing horrifying golf. He plans to write until the day he dies, probably longer. For Stephen, writing was an accident. When his friends in Muskoka, Canada, and Florida became aware of the story of his incredible life in the Canadian oil business, they encouraged him to commit it to writing. They insisted it was a story that must be told, that it is a piece of national history. Reluctantly, he did, and after more than twenty years the story of AN ENDLESS AND CONFLICTED LOVE, A MAN WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE AND NEARLY LOST HIS LIFE DOING IT, and ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST AUDACIOUS THEFTS IN CANADIAN HISTORY, was finally made public. Stephen has entitled the book: The Bridge to Caracas, for reasons that will ultimately be obvious to readers. Prior to choosing that title, he considered entitling the book: The Nicest Crook I Ever Knew, but in the end, Jim Servito, the antagonist, was really not very nice. The sequels,The Tainted Trust, (the story of what happened to the $325,000,000 stolen from the Canadian and U.S. governments), the second in The King Trilogy, and Kerri’s War, the third volume in The King Trilogy, (the continuing saga of the inconvenient fortune, are now live on Amazon KDP. Stephen has said, “If readers have half as much fun reading The King Trilogy as I did writing it, they will be enriched.”
