- Sonny Preyer – A Fairy Tale of a Different Kind Vol. 1 by Bridgette Hayden - 2013-01-27 20:55:53-05
Forty-three year-old Bridgette Hayden is the author of Sonny Preyer. She resides in Tennessee, printing and promoting her novels herself. Of the criticism that self-publishers have encountered from traditionally published authors, she says, "We're not lazy. Self published authors have to wear a lot of hats and learn a lot of skills and don't have the luxury of sitting back and having the printing, marketing and promoting strategies, done for them. Call us anything but lazy. It's just that this digital age gives us the resources to make decisions for ourselves, maintaining our creative independence. What artist wouldn’t want that? Are there pitfalls? Yes. Does being traditionally published by seeking agents and contracts, guarantee quality? No. I’ve read too much crap from major publishing houses and gotten fed up with the process. So what do you do if mainstream publishers aren’t publishing what you want to read? You do it your damn self. That’s just practical.” There may be glory is being an old-fashioned, ‘the-chosen-one’ author. But for Hayden, there’s also glory in rolling up your sleeves and building your dream with your own bricks and mortar. To each their own. "Why tear someone down for not following your path? We should support each other. " Only recently, has she allowed volume one of the Sonny Preyer saga to become available on Amazon's Kindle platform. "I fought it for a while. My books are my babies and I didn't want any fine print to come between me and my publishing rights. But the fear of letting go started to get in the way of progress with my current project, so I just let go." The other two volumes are located at her site, sonnypreyer.com. Hayden first decided to test the appeal of Sonny Preyer in 2oo6, by making portions of it available on her blog. After a favorable response and reader support, she then dusted off her web design skills and devoted a site entirely to the saga. After struggling with software challenges, she realized that she would have to find a way to economically provide readers with printed copies of the novel, effectively untying them from special programs or devices altogether. Research and an old love of crafts, convinced her to tackle the task herself. “I’ve figured out a away to print at the lowest cost possible to supply a modest demand for my books. And I’ve developed a fascination with book-binding over the years, so why not? It’s become a hobby of sorts, being able to print and bind on the small scale that I do. I don’t make a lot of money, but I do get to live my dream of writing the novels I love and supplying responsive readers with them.” The next and fourth installment of the Sonny Preyer saga, titled Summons, is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2013.
