- Three Colours Black by Karl Riennes - 2012-10-09 15:43:13-04
Karl Riennes is an author living and writing in his home city of Belfast. Born into a divided society hell bent on war and destruction, Karl has a unique perspective on all things criminal or conflict related in Northern Ireland; due to the family he was born into, the environment which shaped him, and the choices he made as an adult. Reading and story-telling allowed him to escape the horrors of a being a child of the Troubles. It was made apparent very early on that life wasn't going to be easy growing up in the 'killing fields' of North Belfast; marked as such due to two thirds of all tragedies in the 35 year history of the Troubles confined to its working class ghettos. When society is consumed by guerrilla warfare, survival skills are a necessity; when shootings, punishment beatings, riots, bomb attacks and feuds are common activities, the streets become no place for children to play. Conflict, violence, adversity, grief and an innate sense of suffering were life lessons he learnt growing up. 1980's Belfast was a miasma of despair, choking and overcoming a person until they succumbed to the fumes. At sixteen Karl escaped Belfast's grip, leaving home and travelling around Europe with a punk band, staying in squats or living rough; reading all the while and writing stories as he travelled. After more than a year on the road, the pull of his ties and family back home was too strong to resist, so with a changed perspective on life, and how he wanted to live his, Karl returned to the warzone that was Belfast circa 1990's. With his eyes opened to life beyond the 'Peace Walls' of Belfast, Karl was intent on making a positive impact in his corner of the world; whereupon leaving university, he started his working life in the field of conflict transformation. In his 15 years as a peace builder and mediator, Karl was known for his integrity and fearlessness in bringing armed paramilitaries "out of the jungle". His work has brought him into contact with, not only Northern Irish combatants, but with groups such as FARC in Columbia, Basque Separatists, and activists in Israel and Palestine. Over those years Karl has written stories and articles for various journals, and contributed to graduate / post-graduate research in the field of post conflict resolution, for students and academics alike. His insights and experiences have influenced work from universities such as Oxford, Sorbonne, Columbia, Harvard, Kassel, and Queens Belfast. Taking his environment and experiences, with all his strife and suffering, and forming a clear and precise picture of it, Karl writes to tell stories that are deep in meaning. He takes hard-to-tackle issues in society and presents them in a fictional setting; to shine light on them and give a context for those on the outside looking in if nothing else. To illustrate with words the beauty that can be found in even the ugliest of places.

- Fantastic Candy from Afghanistan - 2012-10-09 15:44:03-04
AS A CHILD Sebastian Briglia wanted to be American, and luckily for him at the time, so did his parents. They emigrated from Bulgaria in 1991, not long after the fall of communism. As an adult, he realized Bulgaria as he remembered it did not exist anymore. Later he began to suspect that Bulgaria as he remembered it never existed. He has attempted to reach a balance between what he thinks he wants and what he thinks he needs by exploring spirituality and materialism both on and off new wave music, in urban as well as rural environments. All of this, of course, has been to no avail. He has only published under his real name at The Italian Tribune News in Newark, NJ, where he worked as a staff writer over a decade ago. The rest of his journalistic and feature writing has been published under a pen name. He currently works in public relations.

- A Sling and A Stone: Courageously Overcoming Goliath From the Inside Out, by Joseph Haulbrook - 2012-10-11 15:28:49-04
First and foremost, Joe is not afraid to push a broom. He believes a willing spirit and a humble attitude are the foundation for any accomplishment. He is the son of hard working parents. His mother, a retired special education teacher, and his late father retired after 30+ years with NASA. Joe has been working since he was big enough to push a lawn mower. His jobs prior to college included busboy, stocker, sales, pizza cook, landscaper, carpenter, music instructor, newspaper photographer, and swim instructor. During college he worked primarily for his university, but also worked weekends and summers for manual labor temp agencies. It was all these experiences combined that grew his personal beliefs in business and life: * Lead by example * Follow with integrity * Don't worry about who gets the credit * Leave a place better than you found it * Do something for someone who cannot repay you * Complain only when you are willing to help make needed changes * Be willing to be willing With a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's degree in Business, he has experienced a wide array of organizational structures. As an Educator he works mostly with At-Risk Students. The real challenge, he says, is bringing everyone together to agree on one strategic plan, then persistently follow through with it until the student is successful. As a Consultant he has worked with large and small businesses, leaders, supervisors, managers, and business owners. He has also worked with churches, schools, even professional counselors, and football coaches. He is a multi-year recipient of both Who's Who in America - Business, and Education. As a Leader, Joe brings a sense of calm to stressful situations, and an air of reason and common sense that helps leaders, managers, and organizations come together to create solutions. He never pretends to have all the right answers, but he usually has the right questions. And if it takes pushing a broom to find solutions, he will lead the way.

- Pobody’s Nerfect by Scott Helvick - 2012-10-12 22:41:37-04
I never had any plans of becoming an author; it happened by accident. During my tumultuous teenage years, I discovered the therapeutic qualities of putting pen to paper (or, more commonly, hands to keyboard). Nine years later, in a stroke of genius/insanity, I came up with the idea to throw all of those writings into a cauldron and perform some incantations to see what would happen. The result was my first book, Pobody's Nerfect! Nowadays, I am living joyfully in Seattle in a big egalitarian house of eight people. When I'm not composing words of wisdom for the masses, I can probably be found working on my social enterprise/tech startup, participating in a contra or swing dance, or doing the dishes. Never content to rest on my laurels, I am constantly reevaluating my reasons for existing on this strange planet and fine-tuning my ambitions to line up with those reasons. My fledgling startup, called Synthebliss, will be a major part of that - even if I'm not always sure exactly how.
- Pharaoh’s son - 2012-10-12 22:46:02-04
Diana Wilder grew up all around the United States thanks to a family that moved a good deal. Perhaps because of the Irish in her, she liked to weave stories for her own enjoyment about the people she met and the places she saw during her travels. She graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in ancient and medieval history and experience in journalism. Her love of storytelling developed into a love of writing. She wrote her first novella, based on Kamehameha's Hawaii, in middle school. She started writing novels in graduate school, and has produced three historical mysteries set in New Kingdom Egypt: The City of Refuge, Pharaoh's Son and A Killing Among the Dead. The heartbreak and gallantry of the American Civil war has always caught her imagination, and she served as a Docent in the Civil War Library and Museum in Philadelphia for some years. The Safeguard arose from her research into the Georgia theater of the war. She has written books set in Paris, in ancient Egypt, the American Civil War, various fantasy places. Currently she is working on sequels to Pharaoh's Son and A Killing Among the Dead, as well as another novel set in western Virginia during the American Civil War, tentatively titled Crowfut Gap. Diana enjoys ttraveling, tries to knit, takes photographs and sails (on a lake in a Sunfish). She sometimes attends cat shows as an exhibitor or as a Judge's clerk. She is currently working in graphic design, and cannot understand why any author would tolerate a boring book cover.

- Penny Picklepants and The Twenty Pickle Pie - 2012-10-12 23:05:35-04
A.M. Jones originally hails from the mountain country of northwest Montana, from a little town called Kalispell, nestled in the shadow of the majestic Glacier National Park. Growing up in a small town gave A.M. plenty of time to daydream. The young A.M. dreamt of one day working in the advertising world. Along the way, however, she noticed she had a certain knack for making a fool of herself and would often find herself thinking in those moments, "If ever I find myself writing a book, that is totally going in it!" Luckily for A.M., she made a fool of herself on a regular basis, unwittingly giving herself an abundance of material to work with in her first novel, Penny Picklepants and the Twenty-Pickle Pie. In fact, A.M. has accumulated so much material, she is currently writing Penny Picklepants 2, which is yet to be named, and has yet to be given a release date. A.M. still resides among the beautiful Rocky Mountains, along with her husband and three boys. Between taking care of her boys, spending countless hours volunteering, shopping at the local thrift stores and eating delicious pickles, she finds the time to write about her embarrassing moments. Luckily for A.M., the embarrassing moments have not slowed down with age-fodder she figures for future books.
- Rescue of the Heart - 2012-10-12 23:18:19-04
I know that I am supposed to write this part in the third person so that you won’t think it is me, but I don’t want to follow the rules. Hi! I’m Joel Wilson and the author of the novel, ”Rescue of the Heart.” I apologize that I don’t have the initials after my name that would represent my level of education. I did attend some college where I studied British Literature and English Composition, but due to an unfortunate event in my life, I ran out of money and could no longer afford college. That, however, has not derailed my desire to write. It seems to be the one thing I do best; of course you will be the judge of that and I will cherish your opinion deeply. Most of my education comes from life itself and the people I have known or come into contact with. I have worn many hats; from fast food cook, to garbage man; from warehouse worker to selling insurance and to computer specialist working for Uncle Sam. Yes, I’ve been kicked around a lot, but I’ve learned so much. I also spent several years as an aerobics instructor in Sherwood, Arkansas. If you were in my class you will remember me as Joe. I had more hair then…for a while. I love sports, dance, art, a good story and I think that school teachers are the greatest hero’s and are ridiculously underpaid and unappreciated. I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas where I lived most of my life. Thank God I finally met my wife on a trip to Denver, Colorado and that is where I now reside. My wife is Tina and she is my inspiration; the love of my life. All our children have left the nest and now we have two dogs that we call our kids. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me. I hope you like the work.
