- A Time Apart by Brittany Batong - 2012-10-01 14:15:14-04
Brittany Batong has been hearing and telling stories her whole life, most of them based in and around the Los Angeles area. She grew up in the idyllic coastal farm town of Ventura, California, dreaming of becoming a professional character animator. As a child, she spent countless adventures exploring Los Angeles and the greater Southern California region, where most of her extended family was based. She remembers her first experience tasting escargots as a truly religious one. As a teenager she nurtured interests in theatre, poetry, and the arts. At an early age, she developed respect for the sometimes hidden history that dwells underneath the modern facade of contemporary life. She spent four years at the internationally renowned California Institute of the Arts, studying the art of storytelling through hand-drawn animation, after which she...did nothing with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Instead, she continued to observe interesting people and see new story opportunities working for the Cities of Los Angeles and Santa Clarita. Brittany finds that the most interesting stories lie within the hearts of people who lead lives and work in environments that are seemingly ordinary. Ever in love with local history, she enjoys working and playing in Downtown Los Angeles and uncovering its sometimes less-than-evident treasures. She developed the idea for her first novel, "A Time Apart", in her mind for seven years before fully realizing it. She currently resides in Santa Clarita, California with her husband and two sons; and is grateful for this interdependent web of existence of which we are a part.

- Free Danner by Loretta Giacoletto - 2012-10-02 01:59:48-04
Loretta Giacoletto divides her time between the St. Louis Metropolitan area and Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks where she concentrates on writing fiction, essays, and her bi-monthly blog while her husband cruises the waters for bass and crappie. Their five children have left the once chaotic nest but occasionally return for her to-die-for ravioli and roasted peppers topped with garlic-laden bagna càuda. An avid traveler, she has visited numerous countries in Europe and Asia but Italy remains her favorite, especially the area from where her family originates: the Piedmont region near the Italian Alps. Loretta's novels are filled with bawdy characters caught up in problems they must take responsibility for having created. In LETHAL PLAY a grieving widow must convince a team of hard-nosed detectives that she didn't kill her coach's son, a man with more enemies than friends. FAMILY DECEPTIONS follows two generations of earthy Italians and Italian/Americans who learn to survive and thrive through a series of misdeeds, the worst against those they love the most. In FREE DANNER a cynical young man's troubled past and deadly encounters hinder his search for the father he has yet to meet. THE FAMILY ANGEL is a paranormal saga about the Americanization of an immigrant family of bootleggers, coalminers, winemakers and priests, and a mysterious black angel who enjoys sticking his nose in the family business. CHICAGO'S HEADMISTRESS, a prequel and partial parallel to THE FAMILY ANGEL follows a 1905 Italian street urchin's notorious rise to wealth and power as the headmistress of Night School, Prohibition Chicago's most popular and innovative men's club in the 1920s. In addition to several horror anthologies Loretta's short fiction has appeared in numerous publications including The MacGuffin, Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine, The Scruffy Dog Review, Allegory, and Literary Mama, which nominated her story "Tom" for Dzanc's 2010 Best of The Web.

Always a reader, I inhaled books during my days of extensive world travel. Before the Nook and Kindle, even before laptops became the norm, I would pack six or eight paperbacks for an extended trip. I had never, ever considered writing until I contacted an author about a fabulous book of theirs. It was suggested that I should try my hand writing. Here I am! I can never thank this person enough for the joy I recieve from writing. I have been married 32 years. My wife and I have two beautiful daughters, Katie and Maddie. Besides writing, I love to cook, travel and drive my Corvette. I have a dog and two cats.

- How to Write a Dick: A Guide for Writing Fictional Sleuths from a Couple of Real-Life Sleuths by Colleen Collins and Shaun Kaufman - 2012-10-02 02:04:15-04
We’re a couple of PIs who also happen to write. One of us, Shaun Kaufman, is also a trial attorney specializing in personal injury, criminal defense and business litigation. The other, Colleen Collins, is also a multi-published novelist (21 novels, and currently contracted to write a novel with a private eye protagonist, release date 2013). Starting back around 2005, writers began contacting us with questions about sleuths, PIs, cops, and legal eagles. Fielding those questions let to our teaching online classes to writers and presenting workshops at regional and national writers’ conferences (Left Coast Crime, Rocky Mountain Mystery Writers of America, Romance Writers of America, others). We’ve also written articles about private investigations for magazines, newsletters and online sites such as PI Magazine, Pursuit Magazine, PINow.com, Romance Writers Report, NINK (for Novelists, Inc.), Reflections in a Private Eye, and others. Teaching courses and writing articles for writers led to the Guns, Gams, and Gumshoes blog, which in turn led to our writing several nonfiction books about private investigations (How to Write a Dick: A Guide for Writing Fictional Sleuths from a Couple of Real-Life Sleuths and How Do Private Eyes Do That?).
