Jim Lively is currently the Artist and Curator at Martsolf Lively Contemporary in Richardson, Texas. After practicing law for many years, Jim decided to pursue his passion full time as a visual artist, film maker and author. He received the 2016 Merrimack Media Outstanding Writer Award for his second novel, Punitive Damages. Surreal Absurdity is a sequel to his third novel, Aberrant Behavior.
His artwork and art films have been recognized in numerous juried competitions, publications and film festivals. He has exhibited his artwork in several group and solo exhibitions across North America and Europe.
Fourteen of Jim’s films have been selected to various film festivals around the world. His art film, The Soul of Vinyl, Abbey Road Side 2. screened at the 2016 New York City Independent Film Festival. Jim’s film, The Case of the Deranged Sommelier won Best Experimental Film in the 2016 Directors Circle of Shorts Film Festival and the 2017 Lion’s Head Film Festival. Born to a low middle-class family of four (including me), I had a fairly happy childhood, in spite of the dearth of resources like money, own house etc. I have grown up watching the struggles of my father to support us for our study in spite of losing his job, the struggles of my mother to protect and nurture us with proper values like responsibility, duty etc., in spite of destituteness all around in our life, in addition to being seriously ill all the time.

I have gone through many phases, from being a naïve child being sheltered by my parents to diving into the world alone and swimming through all its shades, white, black, grey, orange etc.

Somewhere along the way, I took up the mantle from my parents of ‘never saying die’ attitude and being magnanimous and proud at the same time, formed many lifelong friends, been in love passionately as well as felt the bitter taste of heartbreak, been in poverty as well as experienced the excess of wealth and also the perils of a fragile health and the ecstasy of being in presence of an enlightened mind.

There is always a saying that, whatever we give out to the world, it comes back to us in many ways. Hence, this book is my endeavor to give out a little positivity to the world.

About Warriors and Monks: Pons, Abbot of Cluny

Pons, born to a noble family in the south of France in 1075, is given to the Saint Pons Monastery at the age of four by his father. His parents never visit him, and this embitters his feeling towards his family. As a Benedictine monk he thrives in the monastery as a devotee of the Order’s rules, working, praying, and studying.
Reaching adulthood, he falls in love with Primavera, a woman in the nearby village, but the Church’s renewed enforcement of celibacy endangers their relationship.
He excels in his role managing the library and supervising the scribes at the monastery and is promoted to the largest Benedictine abbey at Cluny, France. He must travel across France to reach his new role. It is a lawless time when people of the land are threatened with violence as they cultivate their fields or journey on pilgrimage. The local nobles are jealous of his power and spread lies about him to the Pope. Pons is leader of Cluny Abbey, which has over a thousand satellite monasteries with 10,000 monks. Thus, Pons rivals the Pope’s religious power and influence, and he frequently is in conflict with the Pope’s religious directives.
During these challenges, he must continue the construction of the new church at Cluny, planned to be the largest Christian church in Europe.
After repeated conflict with the Pope, he makes a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and joins the crusade to save Jerusalem. On the Venetian ship to the Holy Land, he meets an Irish monk, and they join a troop of Polish knights. When they reach the Levante, Pons must fight alongside Christian knights and soldiers and experiences firsthand the violence of the crusades.
His religious views have soured by what he saw in the Holy Land, and he returns to Europe. Pons visits his mother in France before returning to Cluny. Life changing surprises await him there.
