J. Schlenker started out in life as an artist. The date escapes her, but it was as soon as she had enough motor function in her stubby little fingers to hold a crayon. Later, she turned her love of color into an art degree. Other than drawing and painting, she knitted and wrote poems. It wasn’t until mid-life after giving into the demands of society, squirreled away in a cubicle under fluorescent lights, that she decided enough was enough and wove her way back into what she loved, literally, using a loom to create fiber art.
Retirement loomed (pun intended). What to do with the next phase of her life? During a serendipitous moment while reorganizing bookshelves, her husband uncovered a hidden gem, a notebook of poems she had written in high school. Besides art, reading was also a passion. Her husband said, “Why don’t you write?”
So during the last phase of her life, J. Schlenker, a late-blooming author, lives with her husband Chris in the splendid middle of nowhere in the foothills of Appalachia in Kentucky where the only thing to disturb her writing is the croaking of frogs, the occasional tapping of a woodpecker, or the sounds of hay being cut in the fields, because being a lover of nature, she takes her laptop outside as much as possible to write.
The rest is both history and ongoing as she weaves stories.
