He passed the civil engineering licensure examination on November18 & 19, 2000, with a rating of 93.75% where the required passing is only 70%.

My first proper memories are starting school, struggling to sift through what people thought, said, and actually meant – often 3 completely different things. And all that other stuff in people’s heads, tunes, repetitive phrases, emotions and sensations – happy, sad, cold, hot, sore throat, hungry. Emotions are the things that seep out most, and they become tangled with those seeping out from others. Not surprising I got a lot of headaches.
One person is noisy, several make a dreadful din, and output from a crowd is mind-aching. I had to learn, and I did, taught myself to automatically tune out, barrier-build, and compensated by mimicking the reactions of others. The trickiest thing was knowing what I should be hearing and understanding as opposed to what I shouldn’t. Seeking guidance often got me even deeper into hot water.
Luckily my family were on the paranoid side, and as they came to understand more about what I was and what I could do, paranoid proved politic. Taking everything into account I think we all managed rather well, and it wasn’t really anybody’s fault things took a turn for the dangerous, and then the life-threatening. You have to learn to take the rough with the smooth.

I started out writing magazine features, fiction and a diary series before setting up a home-based business, growing a team to sell children’s party goods. I also trained as an ante-natal teacher. Thought all was going rather well until the husband said, if he opened one more cupboard and one more pack of Mr Men party plates landed on his head he was leaving!

Tough decision, but I opted for the husband and opened a shop – possibly the only one where queuing customers were advised to breathe in short pants and not push. With our Busy Bags (sanity-savers for parents) selling well, I was able to open a second shop, adding books and educational toys to the mix.

When I sold the shops, I headed into the travel market, creating tailor-made, off-the-beaten-track trips, to New England. I also began to publish an annual,glossy guide to independent hotels, inns and B&Bs which eventually took in accommodation all over the US. When I sold to a FTSE 100 company, I dipped a toe into vintage books and also started my collection of public domain vintage postcards, which was how the Vintage Ladies books arose.

I currently run a copywriting consultancy, am still writing fiction and features, have blogged for The Telegraph Online, written 4 Paranormal Novels, and 4 Business Books (taking care not to mix the last two.)
