I began making up stories in my head as a child to help me fall asleep. I sang with Elvis, rode the range with John Wayne, drove the car on vacations with my brother when my feet wouldn’t even touch the pedals, and had many other exciting adventures. I began telling my stories to a friend when, on a long road trip to the southern United States, my traveling companion said, “Jen, tell me one of your stories.” I had never shared my tales with another, however, she was a trusted confidante. My storytelling continued with my children, and helped that friend through chemotherapy, giving me the confidence to eventually write my stories on paper.

I have been teaching for over 20 years. When the whole world went under quarantine, teaching became undiscovered territory. I absolutely love teaching and know it is important to be flexible, always keeping in mind doing what is best for the students. Watching my students adjust to their new normal, I found myself concerned with their feelings about homebound learning.

The inspiration for “When The World Was Sick” was discussions with students when communication was conducted virtually with no physical contact. The challenge to create lessons which motivated and kept them engaged was a daily task.

Science has been one of my favorite subjects to teach for many years. I enjoy seeing students when they are engrossed in hands-on learning activities. In this book, a student has become discouraged about education and then a science assignment reignites the joy of learning.

Included in this book are six labs which may be conducted at home using typical household items, vocabulary words to discuss, and higher level thinking questions to ponder.

My name is Morhaf Al Achkar. I was born in Aleppo-Syria in 1983. I migrated to the United States in 2006 after finishing medical school. I also obtained a Ph.D. in Education from Indiana University. Currently, I am a practicing family physician and associate professor at the University of Washington.

In 2016, I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Since then, my research has focused on the experience of patients living with cancers. My first book is based on interviews I did with 39 patients who live, like me, with advanced illness. I explored how these patients find meaning, cope, and build resilience
