Rose Miller was born and raised in north central Pennsylvania, spending much of her youth on a farm with her family. After marrying her husband, Hal, they moved to north central Indiana where they resided on a 75-acre horse farm. Most of her life has been shared with animals of many kinds. She was the manager of their horse boarding facility, has raised and shown Tennessee Walking Horses for over 30 years.

There's something to be said for the adage aboutletting sleeping dogs lie. Kate Bradshaw learns this the hard way when shetravels from Philadelphia to the small coastal town of Eden Harbor, SouthCarolina. She has gone there ostensibly to settle the estate of Ben Snyder, thefather she never knew. Kate is his only heir, and she doesn't know what toexpect when she visits the sleepy resort village for the first time. EdenHarbor turns out to be a regular Peyton Place, full of secrets andhalf-truths.

Kate eventually learns more than she really wanted toknow about her estranged father and his private detective business. Part of thebaggage she inherits is his partner, Sam Garrett, a hard-drinking louse who'smore comfortable solving cases with his fists instead of deductive reasoning.Kate's intention is to sell Sam her father's half of the business then returnto her so-so life in Philly. Sam convinces her that perhaps her father's deathwasn't an accident like the Police claim, but rather a murder tied to acover-up with political implications.

This story has plenty of twists and turns, navigatedby a cast of lifelike characters. The atmosphere is vivid and paints arealistic picture of Carolina coastal villages, where fishing and boating arethe only things that matter. Carol Guy adeptly weaves the uneasy relationshipbetween Kate and Sam in a manner reminiscent of Bogart and Bacall. Herdevelopment of Kate is believable, as she continually discovers things abouther father that cause her to question her own life decisions.
