Josef is a young Amish man in Pennsylvania who lives on a farm with his mother and works as a carpenter. Although he lives among the plain folk, Josef has dreams of a life beyond his Amish community.

Richard Hovious once submitted an early draft of his autobiography to a literary agent, only to have it returned with the comment "Science Fiction isn't selling well right now."

He may have pioneered the concept Fake It Till You Make It: he joined the US Navy one day after his fourteenth birthday, having convinced the recruiter he was about to turn 17. This ultimately set him on course to swap his humble rural origins for a strain of the American Dream idealized today in TV and movies: the fast cars and faster lifestyle of California in the 1960s and 1970s, paired with the dining and drinking of white-collar executives in the Northeast. In 1980, he would trade early retirement in Florida for what became exile in a variety of colorful destinations. In a high-roller life of betting against the odds, and ultimately winning, his gutsy self-assuredness got him into, and through, many close scrapes. It seems the trait that allowed him to thrive despite it all, and may have been his biggest strength (and biggest weakness) was: never taking anything too seriously.
