I was born the year Star Trek was, so I was a little warped from the start (but my spaceship isn’t, it runs on the Quantum Displacement Drive). After an early childhood of hearing my father’s versions of nursery rhymes, such as “Ini mini mini mo, where did baby sister go—she is over by the socket putting electrons in her pocket. How cute! Electrocute!” My kindergarten teacher said on a report card, “Wendy has a good vocabulary. This, coupled with a vivid imagination makes her quite a story teller.” As I grew, I read through everything in sight. As a pre-teen, one of the large stacks of fodder I brought home from the library contained the first science fiction I encountered, “The City of Gold and Lead.” I still remember the title, as I was quite taken with it. I then discovered Heinlein’s “Star Beast,” and James Blish’s Star Trek adaptations, and eagerly devoured them. I was aware that there was a TV show version of Trek, but I didn’t watch much on our snowy black and white set. We did get a better colour one eventually, and then I couldn’t wait for the next weekly re-run to come on. (There was no internet streaming, and it was not out on even video tapes yet, so I was at the mercy of the CBC station.)
In my late teens I had the urge to write stories that popped into my head. I never-the-less went to university to study biology, where I spent stressful hours writing up lab reports, essays, and a senior level microbiology research project. I worked part time for a professor, starting with cleaning glassware and ending up supervising a high school student testing for coliform bacteria in the zoo department’s seal tank.
My brain was bursting to be free, so I left serious science for science fiction. As I worked in health care for a friend of my nurse Mom, I spent a couple of years learning my craft under the mentorship of the Ottawa Lyngaard writing group, where I drafted my first novel, set in the Star Trek universe. With that experience under my belt I went headlong into a long fantasy novel, which I still plan to edit and release in the future. I sold some art work and wrote for and edited print and on-line publications as I got a family started. Publishing isn’t as fun as writing, so I began a bio-tech spy thriller, and was happily writing that when I was caught in the after-wave of the Star Trek: Enterprise cancellation. I proposed an idea on the internet, hoping someone would write it and make a new show out of. Well, the people who pitched in ideas seemed to expect me to write it up, so I did, with their help and support. A rich world developed, full of technology and character sketches. I sorted and sifted, and with much help from the team, especially BJ Hanssen, and writer/illustrator István Szabó, Ifj., I wrote a glossary of terms, time line, Ship Guide, and Medical Compendium, all of which I referred to often for story writing (and will publish in the future, when they can be properly illustrated and laid out). After a decade of development (and breaks while family things happened), the project was ready to release in novel format. With the children now grown, I’ve headed back full force into creating what I hope will prove to be both entertaining and thought-provoking fiction.

Author Bio:
Reece Pocock is from Adelaide, South Australia. He writes crime/thrillers, historical fiction, children’s stories, short stories, personal development books, screenplays and stage plays.
After years in the Army, Reece enjoyed a business career in sales and management. He was instrumental in introducing the Bobcat skid steer loader to the South Australian market—this was one of the highlights of this career.
He studied from 2000 to 2003 to obtain his Advanced Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing). This experience had a profound influence on his life, opening up many opportunities and proved life changing.
History as a Writer
Reece had about sixty articles published in, TheCheers online magazine. This website also published twelve of Reece’s short stories.
Two short stories, The Girl in the Red Beret, and What a Dirty Little Town was included in an anthology—The Killing Words—published by Crime-writers SA.
Reece won the City of Burnside Library crime short story contest, with his story, The Girl in the Red Beret. His screenplay, The Soldiers, adapted from his novel of the same name, was highly commended in the Di Cranston award administered by the Fellowship of Australian Writers. The Ned Kelly writing award long listed, Murder on Display and The Politics of Murder.
Reece’s first crime novel, Murder on Display, was published by Custom Book Publications in November 2012 and the same publisher published his second novel the Politics of Murder in September 2014. He has self-published Evil in the City, a book of crime short stories, Love and War, war-related short stories. Reece Pocock loves to read and after many years discovered he could write. He has published crime, children, history, short stories.
