I was raised around drugs, biker gangs, alcoholics, and hardened criminals. Needless to say I was a troubled youth, but I found solitude in poetry, sports, and my friends who were experiencing some of the same dilemmas and hardships as I was. After high school I was lost, I fell deeper into my friendships, I tried to play sports in college, but eventually I found solitude as a gang member.

During this brief time I hustled illegally, I knew nothing else, I was good at even, but I eventually got caught, and I thank God I did, because I was headed down a road of no return, and absolute failure. A kind judge in Los Angeles, California gave me a second chance, I had never been arrested, I was somehow a scholar athlete with multiple football scholarship offers and no previous record, and by the grace of God the judge gave me minimal punishment. I was thankful, and with this second chance I walked through the front door of the nearest military recruiter, and immediately joined the Army. I remember the recruiters asking me what was wrong, why was I falling into their lap, they couldn’t believe I knew how to count, read, and write, and that I could run a mile without passing out. They were happy to meet their recruiting numbers and I was happy to leave home, a home that was really not much of a home, but a home nonetheless.
