Above all other tragic genocides, wars, and mass assassinations throughout the centuries, the Holocaust will stick forever in mankind’s collective craw. Why?

Because this genocide targeted the Jewish people relentlessly for more than two decades, was executed by a modern state that evolved calculated systems of mass murder spanning an entire continent and used then-cutting-edge technology to eliminate millions of souls from earth simply because they were Jews. It beggars belief.

That the rest of the world sat on its hands to the degree it did, denying safe haven to the Jewish people using lukewarm, convoluted excuses, is the side of the story I did not know, the side that implicates us all and invites stern introspection.

That anti-Semitism is still alive and on the increase in many parts of the world today raises an alarm we cannot ignore.

I am a shiksa, not a Jew. My ancestors are a hodge-podge of Europeans from Germany, Austria-Hungary, Switzerland, and the UK. All immigrated to the US in the 1800s, all were Christians. In Holocaust terms, I am descended from the enemy.

To write about the Holocaust not having experienced it is an act of temerity for which I ask your forgiveness, but I could not refuse to write this book. Scenes and characters came to me in a dream that repeated itself one year to the next until I was impelled to start writing.

The unexpected writing of this story led me to years of research that revealed my ignorance and was overwhelming. I pursued the project with trembling and horror, through rivers of tears, guilt by association, and a burning desire to add my voice of outrage to those who bear witness to this catastrophe.

I firmly believe that humankind is one race. Qualities of Mercy explores the question: if we hate and separate, if we have prejudice against another, is it possible to change our hearts and minds? Is it possible to unite?

Messages from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum regularly remind us to remember, to bear witness, to never forget.

With all humility, I offer you Qualities of Mercy, a work of decades by an “other” seeking to bear witness and respond to the call to “Never Forget.”

About the Author
As a child, Susan loved to read, write plays, and sing. She was bitten by the theater bug at 13 and acted in plays and musicals for over 10 years while completing a degree in English Lit at Stanford and an MFA in Theatre at NYU’s School of the Arts.

In 1970, Susan decided to pull up roots and move to Latin America where she has lived ever since. She’s worked as an actress, at a Drug Addiction Research Unit, a UNDP office, in educational TV; she’s taught third grade, high school theater arts, and ESL classes for adults and children. She’s served as Director of Courses at a language institute and managed a radio programming exchange center for Latin America for 15 years, as well as doing translation and editing. Susan has traveled to over 60 countries.

The urge to write re-awakened when a repeated dream impelled her to develop Qualities of Mercy. Besides completing sequels to Mercy, she’s working on a novel about the California Mission period and children’s books set in Puerto Rico where she makes her home.
