Flying Cars, Zombie Dogs, and Robot Overlords by Charles Pappas

About Flying Cars, Zombie Dogs, and Robot Overlords by Charles Pappas

Every time you chew a stick of Juicy Fruit, eat a hamburger, slip on a nylon, plug your phone into a wall socket, flick on a TV, withdraw money from an ATM, lick an ice-cream cone, switch on a computer, ride an escalator, play a DVR, watch a movie about dinosaurs, get fingerprinted, or pop a tranquilizer, you’re doing something that originated at a world’s fair or trade expo.

In fact, each new technology and every novel product that rocked America and rolled the world, from the Colt revolver and the Corvette to fax machines and flush toilets, started at trade fairs, a $100 billion industry that includes world expos, trade shows, and state fairs.

More than just promoting material things, however, trade fairs popularized and evangelized every social movement and cultural concept, too, including Manifest Destiny, the closing of the frontier, Nudism, Nazism, Fascism, eugenics, female suffrage, temperance, and technocracy.

This book covers, for example, the World’s Fair that featured a nudist colony (1935); Salvador Dali’s half-naked lobster women, their virtue barely secured by well-placed crustaceans (1939); a model of the Liberty Bell made of oranges (1893); and one of Thomas Edison’s lesser-known inventions, the prefabricated concrete home (1907);. More memorable and culturally iconic debuts discussed here include the Corvette, the X-ray machine, and even the vibrators displayed by health advocates at the 1900 World’s Fair.

It is an edge-of-your-seat dual chase as they fight their way through the still untamed towns and locations of New Mexico Territory and Texas of 1884.

Behind this story lies the dynamics of two former friends who grew up together and fought alongside one another as Texas Rangers, then became famous/notorious on their respective sides of the law. About Predictable Results by Patrick Thean, Chris Cosper, Alan Gehringer, Tiffany Chepul, Barry Pruitt, Cathy McCullough, Liz McBride, Ted Skinner, Melissa Enriquez

Missing revenue goals. Feeling like the team is hitting a ceiling. Growth that is creating chaos. Challenges like these happen for most leaders in most companies, especially midmarket companies that have grown quickly. They outgrow their habits of success. Before they know it, they’re struggling to achieve results in a consistent, predictable way.

What they’re missing is the right execution rhythms that help combat lack of focus, reactionary decision-making, and poor visibility.

In this ensemble book, experts from the Rhythm Systems team, led by author, entrepreneur, and execution guru Patrick Thean, share true stories of leaders tackling the big challenges that are keeping them from steady, predictable growth, including

* Winning or keeping your best customers
* Focusing on the strategies that matter most
* Developing a process for innovation
* Improving alignment and communication
* Scaling operations to keep up with growth
* Navigating leadership team challenges
* Integrating acquisitions
* Managing remote employees
* Building the right culture to sustain growth
* Being reactive rather than proactive

These stories will give you practical patterns of success and direct you to tools and business guides that can show you how to build focus, alignment, and accountability.

You’ll soon be on your way to the predictable results every leader wants.

Author Bio:
Texas girl by birth, child of the world by choice.

While I was born in Texas, it was a momentary layover on our way back to Venezuela. My dad was in the oil industry which allowed me to have my backyard in countries like Norway, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. We came back to the U.S. every summer and that made for interesting communication challenges for my grandparents. The first four years of my life, I only spoke Spanish. My mother would have to leave flashcards for them whenever they babysat.

I’ve ridden elephants in Thailand, shopped in the souks of Morocco and skied on the slopes of Switzerland. Even though I consider myself having an idyllic childhood, it wasn’t without some turbulent moments. In Venezuela, we barricaded ourselves in our house while a political and military coup raged around us in the streets. When we arrived in Malaysia, the first few weeks in the hotel were wonderful. Overnight, the cultural climate changed when too many seats in parliament were held by the Chinese. The situation exploded, and we were finally evacuated in an armored truck with large soldiers and even larger guns. On a side note, Peter Jennings was in the hotel with us and used my mother’s typewriter to write his story while cars burned and shots were fired through the windows.

I was lucky enough to have grown up on an airplane with adventure at my fingertips. The one thing I had not experienced was living in my home country. When I was seventeen, that changed. I was dropped off at Tulane University in New Orleans. Talk about culture shock!

I earned my undergrad (French Literature and Education) and grad (Early Childhood Development with a focus on social isolates) degrees. As soon as I finished, it was back off to Malaysia to teach. I met my husband on an airplane and the rest is history. It turns out he grew up overseas as well- I think an angel put him in that seat just for me. We now have two kids and hop planes whenever we can!

Journeys, whether inner ones or across continents, have been a mainstay of my storytelling from the beginning. Based on my life and education, it’s not such a big stretch to understand why. My very first book was written in London on a large stack of hotel stationery when I was fifteen. It was terrible, but the bug bit and I’ve dabbled ever since in writing romances with characters searching for their happily-ever-after.
I have won several writing awards like the Holt Medallion, The Emily, and The Maggie for some of my other books. My favorite hobbies are sketching, cross stitch, cooking, and decorating!
