Prologue
ANGUS LANE is called by his college tutor to explain his thesis on the Social History of the 19th Century and he narrates his family history which he has used as the basis of his research.
Part 1: 1793
GILBERT ROSS of the Edinburgh Banking family visits his Cousin SARAH and promises her great wealth when he and his sister, JANE ROSS, pass away. Gilbert dies shortly after the visit and Jane lives to the age of 92 and dies in December 1839 leaving an ambiguous Will.
1839-1842.
When JANE ROSS died she fully expected her executors to carry out her wishes and settle the Estate on her genuine Cousins in England. However, WILLIAM MAXWELL, a cousin-in-law, conspires to deprive them of their windfall.
Old servants of Jane raise the alarm and STEPHEN BEATTIE is dispatched to alert the English branch of the family who elect, ESTHER, to reside in Scotland and represent them and contest the Will but she is murdered by gassing ensuring the claim cannot go forward. (This crime is still on file as – unsolved)
Further villains are sent by Maxwell to England to deter any future attempts. Arson and manslaughter follow and further plans to recover the legacy are abandoned until that is…
Part 2: 1848-1886: Eleanor.
ELEANOR (ELLIE) HINCHCLIFFE, an inquisitive thirteen year old, promises her mother she will retrieve the Legacy but almost immediately her father is killed and she is forced to work in a soap factory to survive.
Because of her education she is co-opted into the accounts department and works her way up to become the firm’s accountant and marries Captain David Chalmers. Life is good until David is lost at sea. Financially secure, Ellie decides to pursue the promise she made to her mother and sets out on new adventures. On the verge of success she is pushed under a train and the true ROSS line is denied its ‘stolen birthright’ once more.’
Part 3: 2002. Jenny

Finding two old letters JENNY BEAUMONT is horrified to discover that ANDREW, the student fiancée of her daughter, ELAINE, is a direct descendant of William Maxwell. I am a retired soldier and industrial operator. An avid reader, I have had had a yearning to write since leaving school. However, the need to provide an income for my family prevented me from achieving that wish.
On retiring I looked into my wife’s family history which I found both intriguing and the stimulus to get me writing and it became the central to the plot of ‘Stolen Birthright’ which is based on a real crime committed in the 19th. Century.
I have now started on a further historical novel called ‘Eleanor’ at the same time writing and submitting a mini-series TV script based on GBH.

• Annie Clara Brown is a licensed social worker who holds a Baccelerate of Social Work (BSW) from the University of Montevallo and a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Alabama. Her concentration in graduate school was children, adolescences, and families. She acquired training through the Alabama Department of Human Resources as a Family Preparation Specialist. She currently works as a hospice social worker with Lakeside Hospice in Pell City, Alabama. Her position requires that she be responsible for conducting psychosocial assessments, counseling patients and their families about end of life issues, helping patients and their families to access community resources, and conducting grief support groups as needed. Ms. Brown also works in collaboration with the Department of Veteran Affairs educating staff, community, and other veterans about the Vet to Vet Program. Other interests include working with veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)..
• Ms. Brown is a mother, grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She is also a licensed minister in the AOH Church of God, Inc. She serves as secretary in her local church and is a District Sunday School Superintendent. Ms. Brown is an avid reader.
