Where Awesome Book Readers Meet Awesome Writers

Face/Mask

Face.MaskAbout Face/Mask:

The story is set in Montreal in the year 2039. Like most major cities, the air is poisonous due to unregulated industrial expansion around the globe. The war on terror has been going on for nearly forty years, with no end in sight. A few years earlier a small nuclear bomb was detonated on Canadian soil by a fringe terrorist group. This led to the American government sending in military advisers to help combat the spread of terrorism. Soon a militaristic administration was established, which curtailed civil rights and clamped down on dissent.
The main character is Allen Janus: everyone thinks he is a good husband and father, and a respected government official. But, despite having a good job and a wife and children who love him, he is dissatisfied. He finds little meaning or happiness in what he views as a monotonous life. He will do anything and lie to anyone to find some excitement to get him through his empty days. The physical decay of the world around him is reflected in his own decaying morality, and he leads a double life, gambling heavily and spending much of his time with a prostitute.
At home, he is faced with a relative who is well-loved and respected by everyone who knows him, creating feelings of resentment in Janus. In a moment of petty vindictiveness Janus informs on this man to the authoritarian government, getting him arrested and unintentionally turning the attention of the military police on to his whole family. He has to overcome his own weak character, as well as the secret life that he must keep hidden, in order to save everyone from the web of deceit that he created.

Author Bio:
I spent 24 years as a defence lawyer in Montreal, where I live with my wife and two sons. But even as I was practicing law I had the urge to write, at first short stories, and then eventually full-length books. My first novel was The Guilty, a story based in large part on some of the experiences I had as an attorney. In my new book, Face/Mask, I speculate about the near-future, where the world is in physical and moral decay. I’m very interested in writing about people with major character flaws, who do things they regret and then have to find a way to get out of the mess they made. In other words, normal people.

The Life and Times of a Survivor: And Lessons For Us All by Andrew Alan Bogner

bookcoverAbout The Life and Times of a Survivor: And Lessons For Us All by Andrew Alan Bogner:

First things first. Please enunciate clearly when you describe the purpose of this book to others. Otherwise, a book written to help overcome ADVERSITY, is mistakenly heard as how to better overcome DIVERSITY. Sheesh.

That said, what you can learn from this book is powerful and can transform your life for the better.

As far as I can tell, nobody on this planet lives their life without encountering adversity of some type and at some time. If that statement somehow doesn’t apply to you, then I’d like to read YOUR book.

But, assuming you are facing, or expect to face adversity, dealing with it can be difficult and open you up to many options, forcing you to make choices. My contention is that the better you’re prepared to handle adversity, the better you’re likely to come through it. So, I’ve provided a series of tools that worked for me and may also assist you in preparing to better deal with adversity.

They may serve as a reference you can choose from over time, or teach you something about learning from your own past to help.

There are many tools we can use to deal with adversity which already exist. Automobile insurance reimburses you if your car is stolen/damaged. Vaccines prevent various illnesses and auxiliary sluice gates prevent a dam from bursting or overflowing. These are all wonderful things, but deal with a known peril or perils. But what if we encounter an uncovered or unexpected type of adversity? In addition, we also don’t know when or possibly how to be vigilant. For example, how can we possibly prepare ourselves to deal with our best friend losing his parents after they’re shot during a bank robbery?

I’m a simple guy and have no way to predict the future, so there has to be another way to prepare for adversity. But, why go to the trouble of looking for some tool or framework to help in the first place? Because it acts as a sort of emotional insurance policy since it’s not unheard of to be overwhelmed by an unexpected problem. Not only may the original issue remain unresolved but it might compound and drive you into a rut as you struggle to deal with it. An example would be for social drinking to become more of an issue while you’re trying to deal with your friend’s parents’ killing.

So, if we can’t predict the future and know about specific tragic events ahead of time, what can be done? How do we better prepare to make choices, learn and move on?

LIFETIME REFERENCE BOOK: I can’t say I’m the world’s biggest expert in this area. Who is? But I do have a lot of experience successfully dealing with many of life’s issues (ex: family deaths, chronic illness, divorce, loss of children, unemployment, crime, financial loss, employment discrimination). Enough experience to know that there’s more than one way to cope. So, I’ve drawn on my coping skills and written a guide you can use for a lifetime. The tools are adaptable to your personality and comfort level because I’ve provided 4 models you can select from: Process, anecdotal, inspirational and humorous.

NOTE: The kindle edition of this book will be available for free on Amazon starting 12/16/2014 and ending 12/20/2014.

Royal Institute of Magic

RIMAbout Royal Institute of Magic:

Two years ago, Ben Greenwood’s parents walked out the door and never returned. The police have all but given up finding them when Ben stumbles upon a peculiar letter addressed to his dad. “You are the most wanted man in the Unseen Kingdoms. Unless you come to us, we cannot help. For your child’s sake, tell us what you know.”

The letter is from an organisation called the Royal Institute of Magic and is dated a day before his parents disappeared. Like most people, fourteen-year-old Ben hasn’t the faintest idea what the Royal Institute of Magic is, but he has his first clue: the logo on the letter.

Armed with nothing but his wits and the help of his good friend Charlie, Ben sets out to find the Institute and, through them, his parents. To succeed, he will have to navigate a land filled with fantastic creatures and Spellshooters, where magic can be bought and sold, to unravel an ancient family secret that could hold the key to defeating an evil the Institute has been fighting for the last five hundred years.

Normally $3.99, Royal Institute of Magic is FREE from the 12th to the 14th of December.

Tiny Bigfoot’s Big Choice

TBBC-frontcover1About Tiny Bigfoot’s Big Choice:

Tiny Bigfoot is your typical happy dog: he wakes up in his doggie bed every morning, loves his master, Keith, and has awesome doggie pals. However, he’s also unique in comparison to most canine companions we know- Tiny Bigfoot meditates and surfs. In fact, he loves surfing so much and is so good at it that he has a shot at winning the big competition this year. Tiny Bigfoot is about to catch the wave of his life when an accident makes him second-guess how important the tournament truly is in Tiny Bigfoot’s Big Choice by Jennie M. Bragaw.

Tiny Bigfoot prepares for the competition at the beginning of the story, waking up nervous then meditating and visualizing himself winning. His master, Keith, also makes sure to give him a pep-talk; after all, if Tiny Bigfoot wins, Keith will receive two years of food for him for free! Tiny Bigfoot would also win cool prizes like a surfboard and a cool new wetsuit, have his picture in the paper, and even be in doggie food advertisements.

Tiny Bigfoot knows he’s the best doggie surfer on the West Coast, but an East Coast challenger named Scruffy might be tough to beat. When Scruffy gets knocked out during an accident in the water, though, Tiny Bigfoot must choose – win the competition, or help Scruffy and possibly lose it all. Full of heart, an important lesson, and colorful illustrations by Nzuji De Magalhães, Tiny Bigfoot’s Big Choice is a wonderful book for young readers and parents alike.
