Swab (A Young Adult Dystopian Fiction)
About Swab (A Young Adult Dystopian Fiction):
Swab Plot Synopsis
Cat repeatedly dreams of fighting a green-skinned scarb woman with red hair. At the end of every dream, she dies. She chalks these dreams up to the effects of the scarb killing her parents two years ago when the mutated human creatures invaded her town. She and her brother, Nate, have found refuge with a pocket of human survivors on an island surrounded by a lake high in the Rocky Mountains of Southern Colorado. She has fallen in love with her best friend, Ray, and though life isn’t perfect on the island, at least they are relatively undetected by the scarb. That all changes when Ray is taken captive by the same red-haired scarb Cat has been seeing in her dreams.
Cat is determined to get Ray back. At first, the island community doesn’t believe her. Scarb always kill, they never take live captives. Nate believes her and so does Derrick, an attractive country boy with a penchant for going against the crowd. With Derrick and Nate, Cat manages to rally the island community to attack the nearest scarb colony. But the attack quickly becomes a slaughter. Cat, with the last few remaining humans, including Derrick and Nate, are taken captive. Cat awakens to find herself turned into a scarb. Nate now has wings, Derrick pointed black ears, and they all communicate telepathically. But even among scarb, Cat finds herself standing out. She refuses to embrace scarb life within the colony and is bent on finding Ray who disappeared from the colony before her capture. Her heart becomes confused as she develops feelings for Derrick, who remains loyally at her side. Emerald, the queen of the colony, has other ideas for her though. Cat learns she is a bearer, the only female scarb in the colony capable of reproduction and only one of a small percentage in the entire world. To make things more confusing to her shattered heart, she learns that Derrick is her match. Emerald wastes no time utilizing Cat’s potential. Scarbs are quickly nearing extinction, and Emerald intends to use Cat to breed an army of new scarb.
After refusing to cooperate with Emerald’s plans, Cat and her loyal friends are imprisoned deep within the underground colony. Emerald threatens to kill Nate unless Cat yields to her. Just as Emerald is about to slit Nate’s throat, Iva, the red-haired scarb, reveals herself among Emerald’s guards and tells Cat to, “Bow to no one, for you are a swab.” Cat discovers she is more than a bearer; she has the potential to become a queen herself. Using the telepathic link, she commands Emerald’s guards to release her brother. A battle ensues in which half the guards turn to her, but Emerald escapes with Nate.
Cat faces an entire colony of angry scarb bent on killing her and does her best to convince them to join with her against Emerald. Threats mount as Fuchsia, Emerald’s sister from a neighboring colony, joins forces with her against Cat. Derrick, Iva and Cat fight their way through the colony and have a final confrontation with Emerald. Emerald nearly kills Cat, but Derrick saves her and she kills Emerald. They race to free Nate just as Fuchsia’s forces arrive, forcing them to flee the colony.
With Fuchsia thirsty for revenge over her sister’s death, Cat leads her small group of loyal scarb through the Arizona desert in search of another human refuge where Cat hopes to find Ray. He is there, and he is still human. She expresses her love for him, but he sees her as nothing more than a monster now. She learns from the refugees that other swab are capturing human children in hopes of making them bearers. Broken hearted, with dozens of scarb dependent upon her to lead them and a desire to protect the innocent humans, she faces an unknown future.

‘Tis the season…to be undead.

STARRED REVIEW BOOKLIST
“If somebody doesn’t make a movie out of this book, there’s something wrong with the world.
David Pitts Booklist
“The author marries the everyday dramas found in the novels of Tom Perrotta and Nick Hornby to the high camp of Carl Hiaasen or Dave Barry. Adults looking for a funny holiday-themed tale that doesn’t lose its sense of wonder in the face of realism will find a treat here. A lovingly crafted comedy about the madness that fatherhood inspires.”
Kirkus Reviews

Authors Own words
Born in Richmond, Virginia, and carted back and forth between Virginia and Baltimore, I blame my rootless, restless personality on my father. He was and is a traveling salesman with a keen gift of gab, great wit, a ready joke, and could sell white tennis shoes to coal miners.
It was during these sojourns up and down the east coast I soaked up the stories that would later be Tobacco Sticks and Mica Highways. I think authors should exploit their family history before raping the rest of the culture for material.
Dad finally got tired of the east and moved to the Midwest when I was fourteen. We settled outside of Chicago. It is here I came of age and went off to college for seven years — two degrees and one novel later I returned to Chicago and lived in many different apartments, trying to get a little two hundred page manuscript called Ripples published.
When a local printer said he would take a chance on my book, I jumped and had my first novel published by a man who had never published anything. Great reviews and moderate sales put me back to my jobs as a janitor, baker, waiter, construction worker, teacher, real estate tycoon, mortgage broker, professor, security guard, salesman — anything to make a buck and keep writing. The printer lost his mind and published my second novel, too. That landed me with Bantam after some rave reviews and a paperback auction for my second novel, Tobacco Sticks.
A third novel, Mica Highways, was sold on less than one hundred and fifty pages to Bantam and then I did a strange thing — I settled down to writing in Ernest Hemingway’s birthplace in Oak Park, Illinois. I have since been looking for the Great American Novel up in the old red oak rafters and I think I might have finally found one…. My new novel, Rocket Man, is an exploration of what the American Dream means today. A man moves to the suburbs and his life falls apart in one week. It is a satire but with events now, it seems very timely.
A fifth novel, The Pitcher will be out in September 2013. The story of a boy with an incredible arm but no way to make the highschool team. When an old World Series pitcher agrees to coach him, he finds that a dream is sometimes all you have. A sixth novel Real Santa has just been released.

About Icarus Rising by Robb Manary:
Brandon Fahr, international playboy and world-renowned artist, has set his sights on a new conquest. A conquest so bold that he’s decided to chronicle it in a diary. Further, he’s given himself a deadline — thirty days to capture the heart of Rachel St. Claire.
Rachel, a Rock Goddess, has been at the top of the charts for years and has finally let go of her tumultuous relationship with her controlling manager/boyfriend. Now that he’s gone, it’s the perfect time for Brandon to strike.
Rachel feels the heat as soon as she meets Brandon, but what if she finds his diary and learns that it was just a game to him, a conquest? And what if Brandon finds that he might actually be falling in love… for the very first time?
This is a rock star erotic romance written by a man with a male point of view. It is the first of a trilogy, but it stands as a novel by itself. No cliffhanger!

Author Bio:
Robert Manary is an international playboy and man of mystery, with the charm and sophistication of James Bond shaken not stirred with a couple ounces of Cyrano de Bergerac, a dash of Rasputin, and garnished with the rapier wit of Thurston Howell the Third.
That’s how he sees himself, anyway.
The truth is Robert Manary is a construct created to protect the dubious reputation of his Clark Kent like mild-mannered writer/puppeteer/the man pulling the levers and breathing life into the Great and Powerful Oz (don’t look too closely behind the curtain).
Robert Manary’s alter ego dropped out of Radio Broadcasting College to pursue a lucrative career bartending at a seedy gentlemen’s club, played around stocking shelves at a small grocery store until he screwed up badly enough to be given a promotion, and finally left the glamorous life of fighting with Parmalat representatives over the quantity of soy milk required for a small Northern Ontario town to function adequately, for the bright lights of New York.
Manary is an award winning blogger, an erotic romance novel writer, the author of a pretty decent romantic comedy, and for a brief period in the early nineties served as dictator of a small South American country.
Most of that is true.
New York, New York, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. Manary couldn’t make it there, and with only a little prompting from law enforcement agents returned to Canada, and chronicled the journey in that pretty decent romantic comedy mentioned in a paragraph above.
Manary is also an experimental artist who has no clue how to write an Author’s Bio, and definitely no idea how to end one.
He has only been in love once, and that didn’t work out so well, but he dreams and dreams of that girl he’s loved all along. Can a taste of love be so wrong?
P.S. He is also a shameless plunderer of pop culture.

Earth Vs. Aliens by T. Jackson King
About Earth Vs. Aliens by T. Jackson King:
Jack Munroe grew up in the Asteroid Belt and learned to never take anything at face value. In space, you assume, you die. So when Aliens show up in the distant Kuiper Belt, out beyond Pluto, asking for a First Contact ‘chat’ with his crewmates on the comet hunting spaceship Uhuru, he warns his captain not to trust words but to get the heck away. His evolutionary biology studies have taught him that bright skin colors, shark-like teeth and talons mean these Aliens are star-traveling predators! But that violates the ‘feel good’ society promoted by Earth’s Unity government. A bloody fight ensues and Jack realizes these Aliens are keystone predators aiming to add Sol system to their home territory. Jack leads a battle to ensure Humans will never be slaves to Aliens. If someone has to die to make space safe for humanity, then those dying will be Aliens! This novel is book 1 in a four book series, but is a standalone story. Also, there is a modest romance for the Jack Munroe character. Thirdly, a supporting character is Maureen, 78, a grandma battle veteran who becomes vital to Jack’s efforts to kick Aliens out of Sol system!

Author Bio:
T. Jackson King (Tom) is a professional archaeologist and journalist. He writes hard science fiction, anthropological SciFi, dark fantasy/horror and contemporary fantasy/magic realism–but that didn’t happen until he was 38.
Before then, college years spent in Paris and in Tokyo led Tom into antiwar activism, hanging out with some Japanese hippies and learning how often governments lie to their citizens. The latter lesson led him and a college buddy to publish the Shinjuku Sutra English language underground tabloid in Japan in 1967. That was followed by helping shut down the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus in 1968 and a bus trip to Washington D.C. for the Second March on Washington where thousands demanded an end to the Vietnam War.
Temporary sanity returned when Tom worked in a radiocarbon lab at UC Riverside and earned an MA degree in Archaeology from UCLA. His interests in ancient history, ancient cultures and journalism got him several government agency jobs that paid the bills, led him to roam the raw landscape of the Western United States, and helped him and his wife Leslee raise three kids.
A funny thing happened on the way to normality. By the time he was 38 and doing federal arky work in Colorado, Tom’s first novel STAR TRADERS was a stage play in his head that wouldn’t go away. So he wrote it down. It got rejected. His next novel was published as RETREAD SHOP (Warner Books, 1988). It was off to the writing races and Tom’s many voyages of imaginative discovery have led to 14 published novels, a book of poetry, and a conviction that when Humans reach the stars, we will find them crowded with space-going Aliens. We will be the New Kids On The Block! This theme appears in much of Tom’s short fiction and novel writing.
Tom lives in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA and hangs with a group of smart and tolerant Westerners. Divorce has taught him to smile a lot and to work at being a Nice Guy. Still, he is pretty weird. Has been since fourth grade when he began reading SciFi. Since then, he and Authority have rarely been in agreement.

Based on True Stories Collection by Ninie Hammon
About Based on True Stories Collection by Ninie Hammon:
SOMETIMES THE TRUTH IS BETTER TOLD WITH FICTION.
This is a collection of THREE books inspired by actual events that includes the NEW RELEASE When Butterflies Cry, published Dec. 4, 2014–at $4.99!
FACT:
On May 3, 1989, federal authorities busted what they called the Cornbread Mafia, the largest domestic marijuana growing operation in U.S. history. They confiscated 182 tons of pot with a street value of $400 million, and arrested 56 men in 5 states…but they all came from one small town in Kentucky.
FACT:
On March 4, 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir, the president of the East African country of Sudan, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. It was the first warrant ever issued against a sitting head of state. Under al-Bashir’s leadership, more than a million Sudanese people were massacred, another 2 million displaced, and 150,000 to 300,000 women and children have been sold into slavery.
FACT:
On October 21, 1966, a massive pile of coal waste collapsed and slid down a mountainside into the mining village of Aberfan, Wales, burying 20 cottages—and a school—under 40 feet of sludge. One hundred forty-four people died instantly, 116 of them were children between the ages of 7 and 10—almost half the children in the village.
And on February 26, 1972 a coal slurry dam on Buffalo Creek, West Virginia collapsed, releasing 132 million gallons of black waste water on 16 coal camp towns in Buffalo Creek Hollow below. One hundred twenty-five people were killed, 1,121 were injured and out of a population of 5,000 people, 4,000 were left homeless.
Home Grown and Sudan are suspense fiction, political thrillers that detail the historical reality of dope growing and human trafficking—modern-day slavery. When Butterflies Cry is based on accounts of two disastrous coal slurry avalanches. They’re not the true stories of these events. But they are as REAL as what actually did happen.
SUDAN
Sudan 2000—the largest East African nation has become a killing field…
two million tribal people have been slaughtered in systematic genocide. But human rights photojournalist Ron Wolfson is there to chase a different story, a mystery—what scoffers call pure historical fiction. He’s investigating rumors of women and children in chains, sold on the auction block into slavery.
When Arabs kidnap a little Dinka girl named Akin to sell on the slave market, her father, Idris, goes after her and Ron joins the simple villager in his desperate mission. But the two are caught and incur the wrath of a ruthless slave trader. Now, Ron and Idris face savage retaliation and a heart-breaking end to their quest.
Awaiting dawn and an unthinkable execution broadcast live around the world, the American journalist and the Dinka villager are forced to place their lives and the fate of their mission in the hands of a bloodthirsty mercenary and an orphan boy. Together, they forge a reckless plan, the only hope of escape and of finding Akin. But it may already be too late for Ron and Idris. And too late to save the little girl before she vanishes forever into the shadow world of human trafficking.
HOME GROWN
Somebody murdered Jim Bingham…
shot him dead in front of his own newspaper office in the small town of Brewster, Kentucky. Now his daughter must abandon the world of academic journalism for the real world of running the newspaper he left behind.
But Sarabeth Bingham soon discovers that marijuana-growing has corrupted the idyllic small town where she grew up.
The sheriff can’t get a marijuana conviction because the county’s jury pool is tainted.
Her cousin grows weed and has lost his wife and daughter to the world of drugs.
Sarabeth finds herself falling for a handsome bourbon distillery owner she’s convinced is financing his business with dope money.
And a ruthless farmer named Bubba Jamison will do anything—absolutely anything—to protect his empire.
After 3 children find dope money in an abandoned building and the dopers kidnap them to get it back, Sarabeth heeds the words on the plaque that has hung above her father’s desk for as long as she can remember: “Don’t mess with a man who buys ink by the barrel!”
In a blazing front-page editorial in the next issue of the Callison County Tribune, Sarabeth declares war on the marijuana-growing industry! Now, the growers have to shut Sarabeth up and she soon learns a terrifying lesson: dopers fight dirty.
WHEN BUTTERFLIES CRY
On August 11, 1969, two anguished voices on opposite sides of the planet cry out in terror at the exact same instant and their desperate pleas release a strange power. That power will change the destiny of a West Virginia family who live in the hollow below a 300-million-gallon coal slag lake—held in place by a makeshift dam high on the mountainside.
Grayson Addington
…returns from Vietnam to his wife, Piper, and 2-year-old daughter a broken man, ravaged by post traumatic stress syndrome, a chaplain who left his faith in the jungle mud with his massacred unit.
Piper Addington
… doesn’t know her husband anymore. In his absence, she turned to his brother Carter for support. Now, she must choose between them.
Carter Addington
… is in love with Piper and intends to have her by framing the shell-shocked returning soldier for a heinous crime he didn’t commit.
Maggie
… is a mystery. A strange, battered child with amnesia, she shows up on Piper’s porch and instantly bonds to Sadie, a cripplingly shy toddler. When Maggie runs away and takes Sadie with her, the warring brothers must team up to search for them, unaware that Piper’s raging older brother is also in the woods—with a deer rifle, intent on shooting Carter and Grayson on sight.
But something more than chance has brought the child called Maggie to this wounded family. And nothing less than destiny will be fulfilled by her incredible sacrifice…
… on the foggy morning when the makeshift dam on the mountain above them explodes.

If Ninie Hammon had to choose between telling stories and eating, she would starve to death.
Ninie spent a quarter of a century as a journalist before she tried her hand at writing books and discovered it was a whole lot more fun to design her own armed robbery or add a mystic to a murder investigation than to report the facts. Since then, she has published a biography, God Said Yes, and six contemporary novels: Sudan, The Memory Closet, Home Grown, Five Days in May, Black Sunshine and The Last Safe Place. Her seventh novel, When Butterflies Cry, was just released Dec. 4, 2014. Her novels are packed with action and tension–suspense, women’s fiction, thrillers and mysteries. Most are unexpectedly inspiring and deeply moving. But however diverse, they all share one characteristic: they are peopled with gloriously complex characters who drag the reader into the story to live it, to take the journey with them. When Loves Comes, Diamond Creek Alaska Series (Book 1) by J.H. Croix
About When Loves Comes, Diamond Creek Alaska Series (Book 1) by J.H. Croix:
Loss, unexpected discoveries, and finding the courage to love are the themes in J.H. Croix’s contemporary romance novel, When Love Comes.
Hannah Gray has returned to Diamond Creek, Alaska, after several years away. Back home, Hannah discovers that the loss of her parents, who died in a plane crash while she was away, isn’t the only thing she must face. Once wild and impulsive, Hannah shut her heart off to love and adventure after her parents died.
Burned once before, Luke Winters has committed himself to nothing but casual dalliances with women. Rugged, handsome and sexy, Luke finds no shortage of women happy to oblige.
When Hannah and Luke meet, their attraction is instant. Both fight the depth of their feelings—love is not part of the plan.
Hannah’s sense of identity is shaken when she unearths a surprising truth about her family. Meanwhile, Luke’s interfering family and complications from his past challenge Hannah and Luke to face their true feelings for each other.
Can two people who don’t believe love is worth the risk find the courage to face their fears and open their hearts?

J.H. Croix lives in the historical farmlands of Maine with her husband and two spoiled dogs. Before publishing her first novel, she had a successful career as a clinical social worker, including work in Alaska and a stint in Ivy League academia. Her career in social work has been punctuated by sunrise bush plane flights to Alaskan villages and the occasional standoff with curious moose.
A voracious reader, Croix has been writing since college and dreamed of writing professionally. Swept up in her non-writing career, she continued to write on the side. Now, she is excited to have published her first novel, When Love Comes. This contemporary romance is set among the stark beauty of Alaska, where she lived for over a decade, and her love for wildlife and the outdoors bring the story to life.

Author Bio:
In writing my autobiography I have been honest, truthful and, with some limitations, uncompromising. Many of my experiences were violent, cruel and painful and as a consequence the descriptions of those people involved are unpleasant and critical. Of course not everyone I knew was like that and there were and are many good, caring and kind people. As implied in the disclaimers to my books I do not wish those still living or the relatives or decedents of those mentioned to be upset, embarrassed or to have to face public shame. I also wish to protect my own family and relatives. Consequently I am unable to post a photograph of myself as naturally these people could be traced from it. The image I have used is of my own roses and reflects the pleasure I derive from gardening.
I am a retired lone woman who, after a full and busy life, as recorded, just wishes to enjoy some peace and quiet. Unfortunately age, illness and ignorant inconsiderate people do not allow me that pleasure. However, I endeavour to enjoy what I can and to remain as stress free as possible. I found it difficult to write my autobiography because of all the memories it brought back but it did occupy a fair proportion of my time over recent years, which helped me get through the darker days.
I do intend to do more writing. Initially I propose to write my grandparents and parents stories. These will be based upon actual events although there will naturally be a degree of fictional content as it will be necessary for me to surmise some of the events. I also intend to complete my own story.
I enjoy gardening. From my earliest years I have gained great pleasure in watching how plants and trees grow and develop, it is truly fascinating and exciting. How they survive harsh weather conditions both cold and hot and bud and flower again in the spring is truly a marvel. I also gain a sense of real achievement when I see seeds or stones I have planted come to fruition. And of course I love the aromas and colours of flowers and fruit tree blossoms.
As a very young child I had many pets each of which I loved intensely. Unfortunately after those early years I was unable, with one exception, to have pets. Nevertheless, I do love animals and take great pleasure in watching them both in life and in documentary, natural history television programmes. I get very incensed when an animal is treated badly and often say that the owner should be subjected to the same treatment to see how they like it. Of course I have never actually done such a thing but it is often very tempting.
I also have an avid interest in current affairs both national and international, although I do get upset at the injustice and violence that is so often reported. Why do people have to be so cruel and inconsiderate to each other?
Whether this counts as an interest or as a requirement I am not sure. As a result of self-publishing my book I have of necessity had to become a social media student. There is so much in this field that it sometimes confuses and overwhelms. However, I think that at last I am becoming more adapt at it.

Success Principles That Can Change Your Life
About Success Principles That Can Change Your Life:
What’s the difference between people who succeed in life and people who don’t? The difference is people who are successful followed, either knowingly or unknowingly, very specific principles that have led them to their success. This book provides those principles in a straightforward manner. The book is concise and packed with useful information and practical applications. You can finish it in one sitting, so that you don’t have to spend many hours reading just to come away a few concepts. It’s a road map for people who want to succeed.
It doesn’t contain long and elaborate case studies to prove a principle and has minimal repetition of the same concept. The principles are practical and simple but may not necessarily be easy. If you apply them in your quest for reaching your goal, they will speed up the process many fold. If you don’t have a goal yet, it may motivate you to have one and help you reach it. It can also serve as a reference you can refer back to remind yourself when you get sidetracked.

My name is Beck Bat. I studied self-help for about 7 years. During that time I had some insights about why some people are successful and some people are not. I read many books on the topic. I applied what I read and learned from them. This is what gave me first hand knowledge about what makes one person successful and the other one does not. So, I wanted to share what I learned with people but I couldn’t bring myself to write a book. But finally, after a couple of years, I did it. I did it using one of the principles I mentioned in the book. In case you are curious, I used the principle of believing in oneself.
Writing process was amazing because I learned and relearned the principles while I was writing. I was my own teacher. This led me to believe that while I was in process of writing, something other than my usual self writing the book.
I hope you enjoy the book and find it useful to your life.

Casey Quinn and Petrina Collins are neighbors by chance and great friends by choice. LIVING THE DREAM ON A BOX WINE BUDGET is Casey Quinn and Petrina Collins’ first book. It is a collection of short humorous essays about family life (their families, in fact). Their second book, and first novel, NUMB, is a departure from that genre, as it tells the story of one woman’s unconventional and quite illegal method of coping with stress.
After graduating from Loyola University of Chicago with her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene and Minor in Psychology,Casey Quinn spent the next twenty-five years working in a clinical private practice setting, while raising her four children. She currently lives in St. Charles, IL with her husband, and anywhere from one to three children, as their single lives dictate. It is Casey’s sincere desire to one day be an empty-nester…
Petrina Collins boasts a colorful college resume. She began her undergraduate studies at Illinois State University (which she had confused with the University of Illinois, thus leading to bewilderment when she was deposited onto the Normal, IL campus). Soon after the start of school, she concluded that Illinois did not offer the climate she felt was conducive to her academic pursuits, so she fled to the sunny skies of Florida to continue her studies at the University of Southern Florida. Petrina is happy to say that she did, eventually, graduate with her degree in Education, leading to the disturbing realization, on her first day as a teacher, that she had made a huge mistake. She then stumbled upon her career of twenty-five years in the corporate world of pharmaceutical sales and currently holds the position of District Sales Manager. She currently lives in St. Charles, IL with her husband and two children she hopes will one day move out. That last sentence is open to interpretation…
