The Second Crack by Chelo Diaz-Ludden

Second_Crack-frontAbout The Second Crack by Chelo Diaz-Ludden:

Anne, a Portland, Oregon coffeehouse owner, fights the city over an on-ramp that threatens her beloved Bean as she tries to regain closeness with her twin, Suz, who, inspired by her hero Mandela, abandoned their enterprise to do humanitarian work in the townships of South Africa. As the novel opens, Suz has returned home for Christmas, but then disappears after the twins celebrate with a drunken night out. Anne, her brother and father try to find Suz but Anne’s memories of their last night together are hazy. When she reports her sister missing, the police shrug it off but later suspect Anne. She resorts to hiring her own investigator, plastering posters around the neighborhood and calling news stations. Though she frequently ‘syncs’ with Suz, suddenly able to inhabit her twin’s body, it’s of little help. In the search for her sister, Anne also hacks into Suz’s laptop, discovering through her journal entries not only the remnants of apartheid and Suz’s attachment to a family of women devoted to each other, but also her sister’s betrayal of her. And yet, Anne finds that it is facing her own betrayal that leads to Suz’s rescue.

Author Bio:
My love of story started with my parents. If Dad brought home a coconut, he didn’t buy it at Safeway; no, he paddled to Hawaii, climbed a coconut tree, grabbed the fruit, shimmied down the trunk, (all the while fighting off bandits), finally riding a tortoise back across the ocean. Fun? Yes, but my dad’s propensity for storytelling should have come with the warning that sometimes you need/want the facts and it can be frustrating when they’re hidden from you. Like the rest of life, balance is key.
I also grew up listening to my mom and her sisters share stories around the kitchen table. Tales of getting into trouble when they ‘stored’ the chickens in milk cans so they wouldn’t have to round them up the next morning. This is the way they bonded, the way they created their identity within the family.
All of these stories led to a love of reading, which led to a Masters in English from San Diego State University. I then taught in the 1980s amnesty program. Next, I taught in a small rural community college at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I am currently on sabbatical and working on my next novel.

Kadashan Speaks, Legal Plunder by Kadashan

About Kadashan Speaks, Legal Plunder by Kadashan:

Now available for only $0.99. This essay was first published in 2013; however I am bringing it back at this time because Americans should understand this “progressive” crusade. In this work there is a discussion about what legal plunder is, and how it has been seeping into our society through peaceful means as well as by revolution the past hundred years. In this work I try to help America improve it’s understanding about how legal plunder is being used today by the three branches of our very own federal system. Presidential Proclamations and Executive Orders are becoming a tradition by our president for political gains these days; also the Supreme Court’s interpretation of laws has translated unlawful topics into laws. The Legislature, along with ratification by states, has also made laws that are contrary to the Natural Law and are now amendments that are embedded in the Constitution. The progressive movement is deliberately pointing the American compass toward socialism. We learn here that Obamacare is, indeed, legal plunder; we also understand that the bases of the government shutdown last year certainly was the result of legal plunder. Be aware that, through legal plunder, we are dangerously heading in that direction once again. As true Americans we should take heed of what is happening right now and before our very eyes.

Who is Kadashan?

By Robert Adams

Even though he might have a smidgen of Swedish in him, Kadashan is a Tlingit Indian to the core. He is my father.

Even though he now lives in Yakutat, Kadashan has roots that come from other parts of Southeast Alaska as well, particularly from Sitka and Wrangell. His grandmother, Elizabeth Kadashan, who married a man from Sitka, named him after her father, John Kadashan, whose roots comes from Wrangell.

He was born in Sitka. That’s where his mother, Stella Johnson, met his father, John J. James, while they were attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School. After his mother graduated from high school in 1936 they eloped. He was born on February 4, 1937. When he was six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. About a year later his mother remarried, however the marriage did not last. About a year later his mother moved to her home town of Yakutat. Here she married his step father, John J. Adams.

The name Kadashan was given to him by his paternal grandmother. She named him after her father, John Kadashan who, later in his life, was the chief of a Tlingit group from Wrangell. Kadashan means man the elder.

Kadashan’s first formal education was received in Yakutat. His high school years were split between Holland High School in Holland, Michigan, and Mount Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school established by the federal government for Native Alaskans near Sitka. His graduate work was obtained from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka (1961-1963), and later at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah (1976-1979).

As a youngster Kadashan learned from a Tlingit Indian friend, Peter Harry, how to express himself with oil colors. From that point on he taught himself how to be an artist. “He started me with oils,” he explains. “When I was in high school I started experimenting with water colors.” His short stories have been published in the Alaska Native Magazine (ANM) and the Horizons Magazine. The ANM has used his water colors to illustrate his stories. In the second printing of these stories the illustrations are reproductions in black and white of his water and acrylic paintings. He has also written for the Alaska Magazine and the Alaskan Southeaster Magazine.

In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories: THIS IS YAKUTAT, and in 1994 published his first novel WHEN RAVEN CRIES. His stories are local color. He takes a slice of life from the lifestyle, culture, history and tradition of the Tlingit people from his community, and attempts to develop a plot which will keep the interest of the reader. To inform and entertain are the objectives for his writings particularly about the culture, history and tradition of his people, the Tlingit Indians of Alaska. In 1993 he began writing articles for the Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native publication, and soon after was commissioned to write a monthly column for the Juneau Empire, the major newspaper for the Capital City of Alaska.

From 1992 to 2006, my father served as the elected president of the Yakutat Tlingit tribe. It was during his tenure there that he learned about tribal governments and their relationship with the federal government. He participated in countless numbers of meetings and conferences where he learned from tribal and government leaders about tribal issues and problems of the day. As he gained more experience he wrote articles where they were published in his column called Kadashan’s’ Corner in the Juneau Empire. Robert G. Adams Jisn’eey

About The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats by Constance Wilson

“The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats” is the 3rd book in the wholesome series for children aged 3-10. The second book won as one of 7 Best Books of the Year by a Chicago Author (Chicago Writers’ Association) and this book takes the lesson of Book #2 (“Don’t be prejudiced!”) and urges young readers to respect life in all its forms. Just because an animal isn’t cute and cuddly, it is still life and should be respected as one of the cogs of the universe. Bats, for instance, do much good in the world, but are generally treated as creatures to be feared and scorned.

The winning illustrations by illustrator Gary McCluskey and the rhyming Seussical verse make this a lesson that goes down easily and will resonate with anyone who believes it is a good idea to teach youngsters to model good behavior, cooperate (Book #1), avoid prejudice (“It’s best to be open and trusting and kind, and always to keep an open mind.”) and to respect life in all its forms.

Book #1 is permanently 99 cents throughout the holidays. Grab a digital copy of the award-winning Book #2 (“The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats”) and Book #3, “The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats.”

Like most natural health experts, T.C. Hale (aka Tony Hale) began his career in stand-up comedy. Touring professionally as a comic for nearly a decade, he never envisioned that he would one day teach the world how to sleep, poop, and even lose weight. On Valentine’s Day, 2004, Tony lost his voice and it never came back. After twenty-three doctors couldn’t figure out the problem, Tony decided it was time to dig for his own answers. Eight years later, not only did Tony figure out his own issues, he also happened upon hidden information about how to improve countless other health problems. Though Tony likes to boast about the fact that he holds no legitimate credentials (nor does he believe that we need any more “experts” from the same pool of knowledge already failing so many with health issues), he is greatly respected by his peers in the natural health industry. The biggest manufacturers in the health, fitness and organic products industries send Tony their products every year in hopes of winning one of his GearAwards. Beyond working with many celebrity clients, Tony is on the executive board of The Coalition For Health Education, a nonprofit association that helps professionals and their clients learn about health through nutrition. Additionally, Tony teaches monthly webinars about nutrition to doctors, nutritionists and other health care professionals from more than thirty-five countries. You can also find Tony producing documentaries like, WHY AM I SO FAT? For Jane Whitmore, agreeing to switch identities with her best friend seems like innocent fun, but spending a romantic night in Paris with a man who doesn’t know her real name turns out to be a lark gone bad. When their one night of passion proves to have lasting results, tracking down Gabe Sutton and telling him he’s about to be the father of her child is just another calamity Jane would rather avoid.

After years of avoiding long-term romantic entanglements, Gabe has found a woman he might just be able to build a life with, only to have her disappear. When he finally finds her, his belief in happily-ever-after staggers under the weight of deception, and looming fatherhood leaves him with two choices: fight her for custody of his future child or cling to the promise of true love.

Sanctuary by Eden Bradley

Sanctuary-Samhain-400x600About Sanctuary by Eden Bradley:

Devin Delaney has never described herself as kinky, despite a rich fantasy life filled with submission scenarios—until her best friend takes her to the Ring, a San Francisco BDSM club, and her senses hum with awakened urges.
One pro Dom in particular works scenes that leave her breathless, and when he unexpectedly invites her on a journey to the darker side of sex—right then, right there—she sinks readily into the sting of addictive desire. Spanking, flogging, bondage-it’s one wild ride and she never wants to get off. Well… ; )
Shaye’s past makes him wary of getting involved with any woman, but when Devin willingly gives herself over to him, something inside him opens up. And he finds himself breaking his own rules to keep her in his arms all night.
When Shaye takes Devin to an exclusive club named Sanctuary, leading her deeper into the BDSM world, Devin’s kinkiest fantasies—and emotions—shift into overdrive. The experience brings them both to the edge of an inner darkness that could seal their bond—or permanently tear it apart.

Sacred Light Spirit Eagle by Cristael Ann Bengtson

sacred lightAbout Sacred Light Spirit Eagle by Cristael Ann Bengtson:

On a warm December day in California, Cristael Bengtson died. As she found herself lifting up out of her body into a dark and terrifying abyss, Cristael cried out, “God, help me! Please help me! Where are you God! Help me now!”
Then a Light appeared, and it drew closer and closer until it enveloped Cristael with pure love.
“I was surrounded by ripples and cascades of Light, rising and falling all around me, like immense waves in the middle of a huge ocean. Held and sheltered within a mighty flow of Light, I was a tiny girl child, newborn. I reached out with my glowing hand, and I touched the Light. The swell of a mother’s breast took shape under my hand, and I was swept away by powerful currents of Light.”
The Light took Cristael to a great school, where she found herself in powerful currents of information, centered around the skills of writing and music. She was given information about her family and her mother and grandmother that she had never known.
Finally she was given the choice to stay in this beautiful place, or to return to Earth. Knowing that her sons would be deeply hurt if she stayed, and knowing that she had work to do, Cristael made the difficult choice to return to Earth.
As she returned, she found herself surrounded with unlimited numbers of what looked like huge LED screens that showed scenes from her entire life. And she remembered everything. Growing up in Pecos, her marriage, two children, and divorce. Her years as a teacher. The years she spent taking care of her dying mother. She remembered all her spiritual experiences and the many visionary and psychic experiences that led her and guided her through the years. She relived her struggles to deal with a culture and people that could not understand her.
This is a heart wrenching story, filled with happiness and nostalgia, sorrow and trials, love and grief, and the overarching joy of the spiritual.
One Amazon Top 1000 Reviewer says, “A wonderful story and very well written. This is a read that I would read again. I spent a long evening reading and thinking about this concept in a different light afterwards, and for that reason I would recommend it.”

Author Bio:
Raised in the high mountains of scenic northern New Mexico, Cristael Bengtson grew up riding horseback in the mountain forests and meadows surrounding the small village of Pecos, where her parents owned and operated a small power and telephone company. At the age of 17, she had a visionary experience of a loving and luminous Great Light.
Married when she was 18, Cristael became the mother of two sons that she raised as a single mom. She earned BA degrees in music education and elementary education, going on to earn her Master of Arts in elementary education with a focus on the reading process.
For two years she taught music in Sandoval County, at that time the third poorest county in the nation. She then became an elementary classroom teacher, teaching mainly third grade. During this time she studied voice intensively, and developed a lyric coloratura soprano voice.
After her sons left home, Cristael left teaching and took care of her mother until she passed on.
Cristael had her Near Death Experience in 1998. A lifelong journal-keeper, she began putting her book together about 2006. It was like finally scratching an itch in the middle of her back.
Cristael enjoys singing. She is also in the grip of a lifelong compulsive book-reading habit.

Yaakwdaat Aya by Kadashan

yakutatneucha1About Yaakwdaat Aya by Kadashan:

Now available for only $2.99: Yaakwdaat Aya (This Yakutat), a collection of short stories is about a Tlingit village in Southeast Alaska and illustrated with the author’s water color paintings. In these stories, and images, you will get a glimpse about the geography of the region as well as the history, culture and the values of the Tlingit peoples in the village of Yakutat, Alaska. One of the themes in these stories, Kadashan is able to tell how his people can live in two worlds, but still remain Tlingit.
In the three part story “The World Forgetting by the World Forgot” seventeen year old Arnie Jones, after his father’s passing, is forced to take over leadership of the family commercial fishing business. This was a time in his life when he was searching for his identity—should he take the time to discover his ancestral roots, or give up his identity in favor of a western education? In “Something to Give”, set on a fishing camp on the Aalseix River, newlyweds know love, but don’t know how to express it. High school graduates in “The Tale of Three Seal Hunters” are faced with the decision of whether they should join the military or stay home and relearn their hunting skills.
In “Lifeblood” we learn how three siblings are faced with the responsibility of catching enough salmon to sell the last few days of a bad commercial fishing season to pay for a heart bypass operation for their mother. It is in the fall and the weather is changing to the fall storms. The resiliency of these youngsters is due to the way they had been raised by their parents and grandparent, something that is missing in America today.
The challenges the characters face in these stories are everyday situations one would find anywhere in the world: Young love, health concerns, financial security, human longings, grief and personal conflicts are subjects that the author tries to share with the world about a small Alaskan settlement. They also face the challenge of taking advantage, or not so, about the short summer salmon runs— If they succeed then they can have resources to sustain their lives; if they don’t meet their goals the long winter months will be very lean. In these stories, and art work, Kadashan describes how western influence and traditional beliefs and values are incorporated into their modern daily lives.

Author Bio:
Kadashan’s Christian name is Bertrand J. Adams, Sr. He is of Tlingit decent from Yakutat, Alaska, a village in the northern panhandle of southeast Alaska. He was given his birth name, Kadashan, by his grandmother who named him after her father, John Kadashan, who was a Tlingit leader from Wrangell, located on the southern end of the southeast panhandle. The elder Kadashan, as a young man, traveled a lot in the southern end of Alaska and was one of the guides to world traveler and naturalist, John Muir. He, Sitka Charlie and Toyetta took Muir from one end of the panhandle to the other to Glacier Bay. Muir, of course, was discovered Glacier Bay, but now we know who took him there. In his later years, even though he was known by historians as Chief Kadashan, he eventually became well-known as a “peacemaker.” because of his knowledge of culture and leadership abilities. Kadashan means “red tide coming.”
Modern day Kadashan began writing when he was in college. He was encouraged to write by his creative writing instructor, who recognized his passion for writing. Twenty years later his retired teacher visited him, read the stories he had stored all these years in a drawer, and persuaded him to find a publisher for his short stories. He spent a lot of time polishing and submitted them to publishers. In time his rejection slips were thicker than his manuscripts. Eventually he found one but they wanted to hire their own illustrator. He turned them down. Eventually he was discovered by the publisher and owner of the Alaska Native Magazine; she began to feature his short stories and, of course, his water color paintings to illustrate his stories.
Shortly after, he began writing articles and essays for the now defunct Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native newspaper. His commentaries dealt with Indian politics and tribal governments. Eventually he was under contract with the Juneau Empire and wrote a monthly column for the Capital city’s statewide paper for six years. He tweaked these essays and self published a book, which is now on Amazon called the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God, Our lives our Liberties, our pursuit of Happiness from a Native American Perspective.
His latest, Kadashan Speaks–Legal Plunder, is now republished after he took it off Amazon last year. He brings it forth again because he believes it clearly demonstrates the adverse signs of the times in America. He expects to have more short non-fiction pieces like Kadashan Speaks in the near future.
When Raven Cries is a novel in paperback. It is out of print now but it can be purchased on Amazon.com as a collector’s item, however Kadashan is working to have it in digital form for Amazon before Christmas. He is presently working on another novel and a non-fiction book about the history and culture of his clan. This book traces his Tlingit ancestral roots to the Akwe River near Yakutat.
Kadashan received his education from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka and Brigham Young University in Provo Utah. He is a retired commercial fisherman, sociologist, a salt water charter boat captain, and tribal government president. He lives in Yakutat with his wife of 49 years and near his children and grandchildren.
