Excerpt from Chapter 1

Sunlight from a window glinted off the straight razor lying open in a soap dish. Leocadia reclined in a dry bathtub as the blue veins of her forearms pulsed beneath her rolled-up shirt sleeves. Possibilities whirled: life, death, hope, resignation.

A few hours ago, Von Ruden had slipped her a letter as the Nazi settlement prepared for the evening’s activation of die Glocke and the Henge. She read his note again and considered whether it altered her decision.

My Dear Leocadia:

You nursed me back to health and provided me the opportunity to fulfill a grand destiny. This evening, I will take the first concrete step toward that future: die Glocke and the Henge will unleash a killing machine of the highest order.

Be forewarned: no one will be safe until I control that monstrosity. You must escape the camp before sundown tonight or your life may be forfeit.

Now is your best chance to flee. Dementrio’s surveillance of us has ended. He left for the Cadwalader ranch earlier today. (Perhaps he knows more about what may happen tonight than I thought.) The remaining guards and soldiers are focused on die Glocke and the Henge.

I have enclosed two maps for your escape. You may never see me again, but I hope we will be reunited one day soon.

After a few minutes, she closed the razor blade. With the weapon in her pants pocket, she stepped out of the tub and shrugged a backpack over her shoulders.

At the cellar entrance, she flipped the light switch above the handrail. Cobwebs drifted into her hair; she swatted them away with her hand. When the bulb flickered off, she jiggled the switch, but it snapped loose and bounced down the stairs into the abyss below. While a rodent scuttled in the darkness, perspiration broke out on Leocadia’s forehead.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered. Her chest heaved. The pall of suicide still sapped her energy.

She clicked on her flashlight, took the first step down and tugged the door closed. The deadbolt thudded as she threw it behind her. Past this point of no return, she allowed the cold stone of revenge to grow in her heart, to animate her frame.

At the start of her residence in the house, Von Ruden had warned her that the cellar may be unstable. Even under her petite frame, the staircase groaned as if it would splinter into a heap. As she descended, her backpack dug into her collarbone with each step. Cool air and damp stone walls pressed close to her body. Upon reaching the small landing at the bottom of the stairs, Leocadia halted amid dank odors.

She swung her light to the left. A pile of rubble from a collapsed wall sat at the far end of her beam. Dirt from outside the house’s foundation moldered in the flickering light; the soil seemed to shudder as if turned by large worms.

Hooked by comic books at an early age, M. K. Theodoratus’ fascination with fantasy solidified when she discovered the Oz books by L. Frank Baum with his strong female characters. She has traveled through many fantasy worlds since then. When she’s not reading about other writer’s worlds, she’s creating her own. Most of her tales are set in the Far Isles where she explores the political effects of genetic drift on a mixed elf human population. I’ve always been an avid reader of thrillers and extreme horror, especially stories that include supernatural or occult elements. I loves all tastes from the old Pan Horror books to modern horror.
