Where Awesome Book Readers Meet Awesome Writers
I’m going to tell you a secret. The gods are real. All of them. And they want you dead. Yes, you. Don’t take it personally, they want all of us dead. Well, maybe not all of us but a lot of us. Why? Because we loved them once.
We used to sacrifice to them. Food, animals, ourselves. Not so much anymore. We stopped believing in them, kicked them to the curb and forgot about them, but they haven’t forgotten us. They need us, need the energy we gave them through sacrifice, energy they used to gain magic, power, and immortality. See, the gods aren’t gods without us.
So they came up with a plan. War. If we went to war against each other, they could take the dead as sacrifice. So they manipulated us, infiltrated our governments and possessed the minds of our leaders. They played us against each other. It was a good plan and it worked well. Until I found out.
Oh that sounded tough, didn’t it? Honestly, I’m nothing special. I don’t have super powers or inhuman strength. What I do have is a little magic and enough knowledge to fight them, hunt them. I may even have allies, gods who claim they’re on our side, but I’m not sure yet. It’s hard to trust a god of thunder who looks so damn good in his leather pants. That’s just not right.
So now you know the secret and you’re not safe anymore. You’d better come with me.

Author Bio:
Amy Sumida lives on a little island in the middle of the Pacific ocean with her two gravity-defying felines. She sleeps in a fairy bed, lifted high in the air, and upon waking, she enjoys stabbing people with tiny needles, over and over, under the guise of making pretty pictures on their skin. She paints dark images on canvases in a cave-like studio carved out of the side of a cliff, and beautiful murals on the walls of her home directly above. She’s happiest with her nose buried in a book, or in her laptop as she writes her novels.
She is the author of several books, including the Godhunter series, Feeding the Lwas, The Magic of Fabric, Enchantress, and Bargains of the Heart. She’s been writing since she was a little girl but first decided to pursue writing as a career when she gave her High School English teacher one of her books to critique and unbeknownst to her, that teacher passed her book around to all of her friends. A month later she was accosted in the halls by a teacher she didn’t know, begging her to write a sequel. She’s been writing novels ever since.
She enjoys serious, kick-ass heroines in her literature. “Nothing is more endearing than a woman who goes up against overwhelming supernatural odds with a sense of humor,” she says. “Who wouldn’t want to be that woman? I want to be that woman. So that’s who I write about, the woman I want to be and the men I want to be with.” Her main characters are strong, witty women, who in the midst of trauma will crack a joke, or find the nerve to sass a villain even when they know it’s not in their best interest. Add to that, strong male characters who aren’t intimidated or emasculated by the main heroine’s strength and you have a dynamic partnership. Amy’s books aren’t about women being more powerful than men or subjugating men in any way, they’re about women who can be strong and yet want their men to have their own strengths as well. More importantly, her heroines have humility and weaknesses that make them not only believable but easy to relate to.

About Rescuing Religion from Republican Reason: How the Bible, History, and Reality Refute the Rhetoric of Greed:
Is the Republican Party the Christian Party? Or is it destroying Christianity?
In our modern age of hyper-partisan politics, most Bible-believing Christians despise the Democratic Party for legalizing abortion, gay marriage, and recreational drugs. Therefore, they crown the Democrats’ rivals – the Republicans – as the Christian Party and embrace Republican values as gospel.
Are they wise, however, in assuming that the enemies of God’s enemies are God’s friends?
Since the 1870s, the Republicans have been known as the party of the rich – the very class the Bible criticizes most. Now that most Christians have joined their ranks, Republicans bombard them with greed rhetoric that favors the interests of the wealthy above all else. The result: millions of wealth-obsessed Christians who have replaced biblical teachings with the false moralities of the Republican Party.
These Republican false moralities sound great. They promote pure capitalism, personal responsibility, liberty, small government, the idea that taxes are evil, and the American way as righteousness that’s one-in-the-same as Christianity. However, while some of these ideologies can indeed be used for good, they can also be tools of oppression. When Christians allow these Republican moralities to determine what’s right and wrong, they worship a man-made philosophy that’s not only oppressive, it’s anti-biblical. If these Republican moralities become Christian doctrine, biblical Christianity will die.
Rescuing Religion from Republican Reason uses the Bible, history, economic data, and common sense to refute the false moralities, historical misrepresentations, and economic deceptions of the self-proclaimed Christian party – the Republicans – especially with regard to the issues of money and business. It does so by:
*Including 150 Bible passages that collectively oppose Republican ideology
*Examining the atrocities of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when Republican doctrine ruled America
*Refuting over 20 deceptive Republican economic arguments
*Revealing the other-centered nature of God’s laws
*Exposing the wealth-centered nature of Republican principles
*Shooting down the “what’s right” arguments of the Republicans, so we can focus on doing “what works” for most people, all of whom are created in God’s image.

A Zany Slice of Italy by Ivanka Di Felice
About A Zany Slice of Italy by Ivanka Di Felice:
This light, lively book takes place in Italy, with hilarious anecdotes about the author and her husband’s trip to visit his family in Abruzzo and finally their escape to Tuscany. It’s a rural relocation similar to Peter Mayle’s A Year in Provence, but with zany family members adding a “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” touch.
Ivanka Di Felice’s own expectations were shattered when she embarked on la dolce vita. She envisioned drinking unforgettable Brunello by candlelight and discussing art and history with elegant dinner guests. Instead, dinner discussions revolved around how to avoid a “bad wind,” whether the Mafia runs IKEA, and bizarre theories on why the Chinese in Italy never have funerals. Now she drinks Zio’s own “unforgettable,” almost undrinkable, wine, as he pays long-winded tributes to the vile liquid as if it were an elixir of the gods. Celebrate with our author—for mere mortals, or their livers, could not have lived to tell the tale.
Ivanka thought her hair would suddenly become long and thick and her bust size would miraculously increase. She would be dressed by Dolce and Gabanna. Yet instead of wearing four-inch spike heels with a flowing linen skirt and a “minimum-coverage, maximum-support bra,” she actually became less fashionable in Italy and could model “forty is the new sixty” with her newly adopted casalinga look.
Although the author was initially drawn to Italy for its art, architecture, and Vogue, often described in other books, it is evident that still lifes and stilettos do not hold this author’s attention as much as living people do.
The author’s open, sympathetic viewpoint captures the characters’ quirky charm and the local color. Although you certainly wouldn’t call this a philosophical book, how the author observes and deals with individuals and situations in her life shows that she follows her own philosophy, one that is worth looking into. If we could regard the most sinister carabinieri and the most self-important consulate employee with sympathetic amusement and not anger, that would be an accomplishment worth imitating. The author can laugh at her own expense, a rare quality. Her attitude and wit can turn even adversity into an almost tolerable and redeeming experience. Although the author is not so naïve as to think that all Italians’ lives flow as smoothly as their olive oil, she has not met anyone in Italy who is bitterly disappointed with life.
Follow her unlikely adventures as she’s reduced to tears by crazy-making Italian bureaucrats and tries to find work as a truffle telemarketer. You will encounter elderly aunts climbing trees, pyromaniac septuagenarians, and all sorts of “fowl” play.
So pour yourself a glass of bad Italian wine, add a dose of accordion music, and spend some time in Ivanka Di Felice’s Italy.

After reading Irving Stone’s Men to Match my Mountains Ken sought out other books about the westward emigration before the Old West was born. Finding very little in the genre there was nothing left but to fictionalize the story himself. The result is the beginning of the Bonner saga featured here.
Consaul had walked away from many dreadful and boring jobs, finally becoming enamored with the idea of being a writer. So far so good. He also enjoys making Craftsman style furniture using exotic hardwoods. He has managed to retain all his fingers, allowing him to continue writing

Author Bio:
Jessica Johannsen has been writing romances since she was a little girl. She always dreamed that one day her knight in shining armor would come and she is equally addicted to fairy tales as she is to chocolate and caramel. Unfortunately, like the heroine of most great romances, the princess has some drudgery before she meets her prince and Jessica worked in advertising for many years while penning her prose at night under the covers with a flashlight. Her husband was down there too. After their ten year marriage ended, Jessica found herself 38, single and kissing frogs once more. What happened to romance, she wondered? As the bad dates continued, she thought, what does a big, beautiful girl have to do to flag down a handsome prince?
She realized that while she was waiting around for him, she could give the rest of the world a little more romance, as well as chocolate and a few dirty thoughts, by sharing her stories. The Cruise series is the first of many more to come. Jessica recommends curling up with a good book and a bag of treats until you find yourself under the covers with your next sexy prince. When not reading, writing or snacking, Jessica can be found on the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago, salivating over impractical shoes or having a cocktail with an impossible cute frog.
