   About The Hills of the Tigers:

   This story examines two features of contemporary American life, civilian and military. Carl Norberg is an artist who serves in the American army at the start of an Asian war that doesn’t go well for the United States. We also learn about the arts community in a large northeastern city that Carl moves to at the start of his public career as an artist. He is no more at home here than he was in the military. He would not be at home anywhere because he goes his own way. Can he use his talents to build a satisfactory, fruitful life? Can he find a woman to love? Does his work help some people overcome the effects of a disastrous war?

   I find that stories about enlisted men frequently emphasize the tragedies in their later lives. I wanted to tell a story about a soldier-veteran who works hard to do the best he can to have a positive impact on the people who come his way and who see his work.

   Author Bio:
   I once heard someone say that geography is important for writers. I come from the Boston area and have lived there only 14 years since I graduated from high school in 1960. School and service in the military and work and vacation times have brought me to various parts of North America and the world. Still, Massachusetts and its history have been the geographical base for my stories. I have 11 novels and 2 shorter works now posted on kdp. They reach to various parts of North America and the world, but all of them reflect my upbringing in Massachusetts.

   “The Hills of the Tigers” is a case in point. I would not have written the military parts of the novel if I hadn’t served as a Lao linguist in Bangkok for a year and a half but more than half the novel is set in a city called Botolph that resembles Boston. It is completely fictional, though, and not autobiographical at all. I don’t do memoirs or autobiography.

   After four years in the American army, I enrolled in a playwriting program I didn’t complete, worked in a bank for 12 years, studied at a Lutheran seminary in Indiana for five years, with a year internship in Florida, and served as a pastor of a congregation in a mining city in mid-north Ontario. I have lived in Toronto since 2007.
