Philia: A Time For Everything is a time travel romance with the majority of the novel set in the mid-90s and early 2000s. University student Michael makes a life changing wish during his 20th birthday celebration and finds his life drastically changing as a result. That birthday, a woman from the future appears in a flash of light. Not only that, but she knows his future self as a rich man and famous actor. While Audrey knows some of how he got to where he is in the future, a mystery surrounds her appearance in the past as well as there being memory loss that keeps her from remembering important but also traumatic information. Over the next 20 years, Michael experiences regular visitation from Audrey who simultaneously tries to help him maintain the same arc of his life while pushing for resolution to the mystery of her appearances and disappearances. Along the way, Michael falls deeply in love with his ‘spotlight’ angel. Each reappearance takes a greater and greater toll on Audrey and he comes to fear that what is a wondrous thing for him could have deadly consequences for her.
This book takes a look at a few different questions – If you had the power to change something in your life, would you? And, better still, would you be happy with the results? It also loops back to the power of responsibilities to family and community. Michael is a character driven by responsibility and guilt to protect and support his family, friends and community. Finally, perhaps the biggest question this book posed for me was the question: If people don’t have the ability to leave or be independent, can love truly continue to exist and grow? I enjoyed seeing this question reflected in different ways with various characters throughout the story.

In terms of my personal thoughts on the story, this is not necessarily a genre (time travel romance) or setting (90s/early 2000s) that I would normally gravitate to in choosing a novel. That being said, I did end up enjoying this story and the twists the author created. While it’s categorized as a romance, I would warn that the progression of the romance is quite slow and that there are minimal sexy scenes in the story. For me as a reader, this wasn’t a big issue (I would have liked maybe one more sexy scene, I think) but if you’re the type that likes a bit more spiciness, this might not be your cup of tea. The romance itself was a long-term smolder with lots of internal angst on the part of the hero.
I really enjoyed getting to see Michael’s progression from young adult to adulthood and I think the author did a good job of showing his growing maturity and evolving sense of responsibility. Along the way, Michael makes huge decisions about his career, leaving his birth country and everything familiar, creates lasting friendships and has failed loves. The author did a great job of engaging me with Michael’s early career development and the formation of his lifelong friendships in the first half of the book and then with the growing romantic elements in the second half. I was struck by Michael’s need for social justice, need to support his family, and the ever-expanding circle of responsibilities he takes on over time.
Tension in this book comes down to whether Michael will ‘make it’, will Audrey survive her time travel, and will Michael’s love for Audrey ever be fulfilled? Ultimately, these questions were all answered in a satisfying way for me as a reader.
As far as the pros for the book: it was filled with engaging characters that I found myself rooting for over time. The writing was clear and concise: I flew through this book in only a few days. The dynamics between all the characters – their friendships and loves – really drew me in and kept me invested in the story, start to finish. Michael was adorable as a young man – goofy and unsure of himself but grew into a more confident and sexy lead man over time. I loved watching him grow!
For cons with this book, I did find the opening chapter to be confusing as it plunks the reader into the middle of the story. That being said, I stuck through it and after the first chapter had an easier time understanding everything that was going on. I also found that the ending came a bit abruptly (maybe this is a good thing – that I wanted it to keep going?) and jumps around a bit. Some more transition at that point might have been good to really flesh out what was going on. Last, if you’re looking for something with a more developed ‘science’ or further world building around the time travel, I don’t think this will be the book for you. But, the book doesn’t hinge on needing a really in depth understanding of the whys and wherefores of the time travel – it can be enjoyed without this aspect.
All of this considered, I give the book 4 stars and would definitely consider reading more from this author in the future.

Zoe: Oh gosh where do I start! At first I wasn’t sure about this book but by the end of the third page I had been pulled into it and wow it was brilliant! I’ve never read a book like this before and the concept of it blew me away.
I loved it and how it was put together. You could never second guess it in any way shape or form because it went through so many stages there is no way you could guess what happened at the end unless you read the last few pages first! Then what’s the fun in that….
The book made me cry so much at the end because you genuinely don’t know which way it’s going to go. I don’t think you realise until the end exactly what’s happened because it’s so cleverly written its seamless.
You really feel for Michael because he has to try and work out how to fetch Audrey back and then decide if what she tells him is real, but his friend goes along with him believing in it maybe more than Michael himself.
It’s a romance with a brilliant twist to it, everything about this book was so clever, the way it was thought out must have been so hard to put together because at times I was lost in it all not knowing what was happening or if it was all a big hoax on Michael, but then you realise it can’t have been because it’s not only him that sees Audrey.
I love the way they blindly follow her every word doing exactly what she tells them. It’s a book I will re read at least once just to get it all in because I’m sure I’ve missed things the first time around because I was that blown away with it and the way it jumped from one thing to another.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone if you want to read a book nothing like you’ve ever read before, yes it’s that good, you won’t be sorry if you read it I’m sure of that.
She is an up and coming author and one that I will definitely follow because to be able to put this book together takes some talent.

Fantastic and unique storyline, absolutely gripping and page turning, strong characters that I connected to, excellent descriptions. Loved the fact that at the end it goes back to what could have been (won’t add more as don’t want to spoil it). Nikki: The prologue really pulled me in to the story and made me excited to find out what was going to happen with the characters. I loved that the time travel aspect of the novel was introduced in such an exciting way. Michael and his relationship with his family was one of my favorite parts of this story as well because you could tell that he really cared just like he cared about his friends. Michael, David, Stella, and Audrey are such complex characters and it was fun to follow them through the journey of the story. One thing I must say is that the chapters were very long and became a little bit tedious at times. I came to a point where I was halfway through the story and I felt like in between the beginning excitement and the end there was a lot of things I felt weren’t necessary to include. I really did enjoy though seeing how everything came together in the story and would definitely read another book by this author. Justine: I received an Arc of this book in the hope that I would leave an honest review.
I was sucked into this story from the first chapter and I really couldn’t put it down.
The characters really draw you into their world and you find yourself really hoping that everything will work out for all of them in the end.
This book is also full of so many emotions that I found myself laughing out loud in the middle of the night because I couldn’t put it down.
A great book and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Can love transcend time and space? What happens if the person you love with all your heart is in danger? Would you do everything in your power to save her, even if that meant you erased every moment you ever had with her from the timeline of your life? Would you give up ever knowing her at all, just to ensure that she was safe and alive somewhere in the world, totally unknown to you? Those are the questions that Michael must face.
I have never enjoyed a debut novel as much as I enjoyed this book. As an avid reader, I read a ton of books by debut authors. I have to say that this book was so different from anything I have ever read. The plot development is that of a seasoned author. The characters are multi-dimensional and the science made my nerdy brain jump for joy. And oh my, the love story made my heart ache and pound and yearn. I laughed. I cried and I yelled at the characters in frustration at times. The author did a great job keeping me oriented to what place and point in time Iwas currently reading about, which is crucial in a time travel novel.
I want to gush about this book, but quite honestly, I can’t find words adequate enough to describe how wonderful this book is. And I fear saying too much for fear of ruining it for new readers. I will say it is well worth your time and money. A Time For Everything may be Brona’s first novel, but I predict it is the first of many. I expect great things from her and I will be watching for more.
