A – It’s a mix of things really. First, the narrator – Riles – brings an honest voice to the wild adventures. He is also incredibly passionate about reading.

Second, in each adventure, Riles and his siblings – Sissie and Little Finn – work together save a happy ending. They discover the ability to communicate with characters in the stories grandpa reads. Then they learn to jump in and out of these interactive stories – saving the day for heroes in trouble.

Third, as the heroes learn more about how “story keeping” works, they also learn what it means to be heroic – to do good in the face of evil, to stand up for others, and to help people in need. They also learn to lean on each other.

Q – What age children is the book written for?
A – I’ve heard great things from parents of children 5-7 who read it to their kids, and great things from parents of children 8-10 who read it on their own. The books are written at a 3rd grade reading level, introducing age appropriate themes for children 6-8 mixed with just the right amount of humor. My goal has been family friendly from the start – and my own “beta-readers” include a 9 year old boy, 7 year old girl, and 5 year old boy.

Ultimately, the Story Keeping Series invites young readers to explore surprising plot twists, without putting the heroes in too much danger, making this series a perfect bedtime story or first chapter book for early readers – fostering a love for reading.

Q – What order should I read the books in?
A – Each book can stand alone – tracing the children’s adventure through a particular book that needs “Keeping” – but reading them in the order they were written will allow children to see the larger story emerge – like, who is Lark, really? Or, Why does Master Calamitous want to ruin stories? Or, what are the children’s parent’s really doing? To collect these clues in order, readers would be best served reading the books in numerical order, starting with “Book 1: The Night I became a hero.”

In book 1, the children are introduced to a magical book about a Space Spy who must stop intergalactic space pirates from destroying earth.

In book 2, grandpa introduces the children to a dragon, a magician, and a mysterious Lady as they try to repair royal relationships. (March 2017)

In book 3, grandpa opens an adventure in Egypt as the children help a witty professor dodge an ancient curse and preserve priceless treasures. (April 2017)

Q – Can I use these books for education?
A – Absolutely. A number of reviews from teachers suggest it’s well paced for 3rd grades, and the accompanying parent guide helps adults ask the right questions to get children thinking about the story’s themes. I fell in love with storytelling as a kid.

My parents wove incredible tales at bedtime and around campfires. I think I caught my mother’s passion for writing pretty early. In time, I was weaving similar stories for my wife, and now our three kids.

The Story Keeping series really tries to capture that bedtime story excitement – the kids tuck into their bunks to hear grandpa read, and the story literally comes to life as they help the hero navigate conflict – from inside and outside the pages. Grandpa serves as a guide and mentor to these young heroes, teaching them the art of story keeping. The twists and turns will, as grandpa says, “Put goose bumps on your arms and tickle the hair in your ears.”

It’s a joy to finally put these stories to paper.

I’ve spent more time in school than I’d like to admit, and along the way I met some incredible folks. A few standout teachers really tricked me into thinking I could do anything – Mrs. Orona (4th), Mrs. Avery (11th), and Dr. Joliff (undergrad) – and taught me the fundamentals for writing success.

In 2010, my wife and I boarded a plane to Edinburgh with a few bags, a two-year-old, and a nine-month old to start a PhD in Education – the adventure of our lifetime. We traded our cookie cutter suburban life for 500sqft of government housing in the heart of the city – with views of Arthur’s seat and the Queen’s Palace.

We learned a lot about living simply and paying attention to what we value. The move changed us forever – a story of struggle, isolation, hope, adventure, and ultimately transformation.

Now, no matter what a particular day holds, I want to be a little more heroic when the sun sets.
