The Girl from Oto by Amy Maroney
About The Girl from Oto by Amy Maroney:
Every painting tells a story. The trick is in unlocking its secrets…
In The Girl from Oto, a young American scholar navigates a foreign world, experiencing friendship, betrayal and love as she chases the ghost of a Renaissance-era artist through Europe.
2015: When art historian Zari Durrell scores a coveted position in Scotland researching the life and work of artist Cornelia van der Zee, she decodes clues hidden in two 16th-century portraits. Originally attributed to Van der Zee, the paintings contain traces of another artist entirely: a mysterious young woman named Mira. Risking both her professional reputation and safety, Zari tracks Mira along the pilgrim’s route of Camino de Santiago in the rugged Pyrenees mountains—and plunges deep into the past.
1500: Mira’s own harrowing tale unfolds as Zari’s quest to uncover the truth intensifies. Born during a time wracked by war, plague, and shifting political boundaries, Mira grows up in a Pyrenees convent believing she is an orphan, unaware of the dark secret in her past. Inexplicably, she is singled out to receive an education normally reserved for men, including training in the arts. But when her peaceful existence is shattered, Mira must brave the world beyond the convent’s gates to learn the devastating story of her origins—and find the strength to face those who would destroy her.

Lessons from a CF Cornerman: 38 Lessons I Learned During my Wife’s Illness and Lung Transplant by Raymond L. Poole
About Lessons from a CF Cornerman: 38 Lessons I Learned During my Wife’s Illness and Lung Transplant by Raymond L. Poole:
On New Year’s Eve 2014, thirty-seven years into her fight with Cystic Fibrosis, my wife Rebecca went into respiratory failure and was placed on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. They told me that she would never be able to breathe on her own without a double lung transplant, and then they said that she was too sick to qualify for one.
2015 began with a prognosis of days to weeks. The year brought pneumonia, aspiration, septic shock, and something called ECMO. As her health declined, we were rejected by five consecutive transplant hospitals and were running out of options. As she fought through one battle after the next, I learned that the best thing I could do was to show up every day and be in her corner. I cried a little, worried a lot, and laughed a surprising amount.
I tried to keep her spirits up, her body strong, and her mind focused on the prize as I slowly morphed into an overprotective mom. I learned that walking with a ventilator was possible even though talking was not. I learned that you need to find joy in every moment because those moments are limited. I even learned of Rebecca’s weird affinity for tapioca pudding even though she was not yet in her seventies.
I also learned some universal lessons that helped me get through the situation, both in the hospital and outside of it. I hope that these lessons can help others going through challenging periods in their lives and in the lives of loved ones.
