During the depression, Perry has dreams of being in the service. He is very close to his family and promises his mother to write every day he can.

San Diego boot camp and bugle training were written about almost every day. It was something that this farm boy never complained about.

Perry was assigned on the USS Raleigh CL7, a light cruiser. When he arrived in Hawaii, he thought it was a beautiful place, but too far from home.

He really wasn’t too crazy about Hawaii. At the time, it was undeveloped with a fraction of the activities that San Diego had, and it was so far from home. He guessed that he relayed that message back home a little too much, about all the sailors that were there.

“Everywhere you looked there were sailors. The Hawaiians didn’t like us much either.”

Perry didn’t harbor any bad will toward the Japanese people, for there were many on Oahu that were very friendly. Most of them had been born and raised on the islands.

It was common for there to be visitors from the other ships. Perry was friends with a sailor on the Arizona, who came aboard to ask a favor.

“All the boys have me spoiled I guess. They all call me their kid. If anyone makes out like he will bother me, the boys in my divisions say, “Leave my kid alone.” They all know how much I like to listen to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” that they call me the Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy.”

On December 7, 1941, fate places him on the quarterdeck on the USS Raleigh and he becomes an eyewitness of the Pearl Harbor attack and was first hit by a torpedo.

Steps… is a compact book. It began as an aide-memoire to myself – more or less in bullet-point fashion – to remind me of what is important going forward.

It is a reminder of the simple steps you can take – indeed steps one really ought to take – in order so as to keep life and soul together, to be true to oneself and successful in one’s endeavours.

Author Bio:
I’m Irish by birth (born by the sea in County Waterford) and although I feel very much at home in England, where I’ve lived for most of my life, I admit that a part of me still lives in the misty and magical world that I associate with my roots.

Essentially I write about self-help and spiritual health matters.

This is my second book. It follows on from Life and Death: Making Sense of It – which explores life and the afterlife through human evolution and consciousness; also through the paranormal, near-death experience, through past lives and reincarnation.

I’ve spent a good part of my working life in archaeology on rescue excavations. I have a degree in humanistic and transpersonal psychology. I’m also a practicing astrologer, and a qualified lecturer in adult education.

I live in the Cotswolds (UK) with my partner, the musician/composer; Annie Locke.

Some of us are born into a dump. Our parents have filled our homes with loads of emotional garbage. Every room holds memories of screaming arguments, or worse yet, stony silences. Every day we pretend we live in a normal home, and every day more garbage arrives. The stench of denial is stifling. We leave as soon as we can to turn our new homes into dumps, taking with us as much garbage as we can carry.
Some of us create our own dumps from scratch. We grow up in loving homes where getting drunk or stoned does not excuse immature behavior. We order loads of garbage until our parents accept living in a dump or force us to leave.

In either case, many of us suddenly realize we live in a dump. Be it a mansion or a mission, it is a dump. Every day the dumptrucks pull up, driven by bitter children, ex-spouses, angry bosses, police officers, and unsympathetic judges.
We cannot understand why they keep “dumping” on us. It takes some of us a long time to remember we ordered this garbage. It takes us even longer to realize we can refuse delivery on other people’s trash.
Not using alcohol and other drugs (AAOD), slows the pace of delivery. Loads still arrive, but most often they are loads ordered before we got clean and sober. The alcoholic who stops drinking still lives in a dump, but with luck most of the garbage will rot away. He may have to deal with other people’s loads.

Recovery requires cleaning out the dump. We get rid of old garbage and learn to refuse other people’s garbage. In recovery we get out from under loads we don’t remember ordering that arrive after we get clean and sober.
If you seem to have misplaced your mansion under the mounds of garbage, read on. It is time to start digging out.

The last time I had a drink, I made an illegal left turn at 3:00 a.m. and hit a county sheriff. I was $35K in debt and soon to be divorced. I had just gotten kicked out of my Ph.D. program. Twenty-Six years later I’m the father of two wonderful teenagers. I’m happily married and living in the suburbs. Life is good. During the day I’m the Director of Training and Publications for Greenbriar Treatment Center, a drug and alcohol rehab in Washington, Pa.
