Imposters of Patriotism by Ted Richardson

IOPAbout Imposters of Patriotism by Ted Richardson

**Available FREE from Amazon Kindle from 8/20-8/24!
50 customer reviews – 4.5 Stars

Savannah, Georgia antiques store owner Matt Hawkins discovers a two-hundred-year-old journal containing a stunning accusation. The journal claims that America’s most revered hero, George Washington, wrote a secret surrender letter to the British during the Revolutionary War—a seditious act that would have ended America’s fight for independence.

Meanwhile, the present-day race for president of the United States is a dead heat. The Republican nominee, a direct descendant of Washington’s family, has shamelessly exploited his ties to the Founding Father—a strategy that has worked brilliantly to eliminate a once wide gap in the polls.

As the past collides with the present, Hawkins and lovely historian Sarah Gordon are determined to unearth the truth about the journal’s remarkable claim. But they must avoid a shadowy adversary who has a billion dollars riding on the election’s outcome—and who will stop at nothing to ensure that Washington’s surrender letter remains a secret.

Ted Richardson’s debut novel can perhaps best be described as historical fiction wrapped inside a modern-day mystery. Richardson ingeniously blends actual historical events with a contemporary well-plotted tale of suspense.

Blood Stones: The Haunting of Sunset Canyon

BloodStones4-6-16About Blood Stones: The Haunting of Sunset Canyon:

The spell of the canyon, like a spider’s web, holds two families in the interweaving strands of two quests – one for gold, the other for answers.
When Darcy Peel went away to graduate school, she thought never to return to her girlhood home. For twenty years she believes she has escaped the nightmare of living in the shadow of Prospector’s Mountain and the strange and dangerous ‘power’ of Sunset Canyon that cuts through it. She purposefully built emotional and physical distance between herself and the small, high desert community where myths of ghost warriors that guard the Lost Blood Stones Mine collide with reality when every prospector looking for gold in the canyon narrowly escapes with his life. Or never returns. Like her father and brother.
Darcy believes she has put it all behind. Until a large box shows up at her door.
Inside she finds journals, articles and other anthropological papers–all of her sister Deanna’s research into the theory that an ancient Indian tribe pre-dating the Anasazi inhabited the general area of Sunset Canyon. She believed this explained the old Indian legend of ghost warriors, also known as the Tribe of Twelve, who haunt the canyon. Two days later another box arrives. This second delivery brings more than an ancient book with strange pages and symbols. It brings back the nightly dreams and daytime visions of a young girl in a red-glowing cave and the savage-looking warrior who possesses her. Darcy’s efforts to contact her sister fail to answer her questions about the box, the book and the dreams. Finally she hears that Deanna has gone missing. She is presumed dead, lost in Sunset Canyon like their father and brother.
Darcy comes home to find Deanna. She follows her intuition that the persistent dream-visions of the girl in the cave are tied to her sister’s disappearance. The trail leads to Alan Brandt. He is related to the McCann family, who for years has been in a heated feud with the Peels over mining rights. Trust is an issue, but when he touches her, he touches her heart, her life and her future. Darcy must learn to believe in Alan even when a supernatural connection between him and the mystery of the canyon is slowly revealed. He is the only one who can ‘read’ the strange little book.
Is he human? If so, will he help her in her quest for answers to her sister’s disappearance despite the seething animosity between the two families? If Alan is something other than human, is he a mortal danger to her? Are Darcy’s intelligence and intuition, at constant war with her heart, the only things she can rely on? Or can she trust her feelings and rely on love?

Author Bio:
I grew up on a small gold mine claim in Arizona where my dearest friends were dogs, goats, my mom – and books. The worlds in those books were no more enchanting and exciting than the beauty and mystery of the desert around me. The one-room school house sitting proudly among Palo Verde trees and Saquaro cacti is still vivid when I recall time spent there. I can open the memory and read it like a beloved book, so indelibly written is it into mind – and spirit
A memory-chapter I “read” often is about the cabin where we lived. From it could be seen a tall bluff that defined the course of the Agua Fria River. Old Indian, who lived with us, explained that an Indian burial ground was at the top of the bluff. He said we should never go there because it was sacred and protected by spirits.
Of course we did. We went there once. One time. My two brothers and I scrambled to the top of the cliff, and for two minutes it was just a small mesa dotted with cacti and mesquite brush. A jackrabbit burst from under its bushy shelter and birds flapped away at our intrusion. That was before everything went still – no breeze, no movement of any kind as the sun slipped behind a curtain of thin clouds, leaving the dim stage to our imagination. Imagination. That’s what the adults said when we tried to explain what we felt and how, under a 110 degree desert sun, we were suddenly chilled to the bone before a dust devil kicked up dirt and pebbles and chased us off the mesa. And we heard voices….
Mom said it was all in our heads. Old Indian said nothing. He let the hard stare he gave us speak loud and clear. He told us not to go. He said there were spirits. They were both right. There are spirits there, and the experience is still in my head. I can read it like a book.
So, borrowing from the “books” of life, I’m writing a series of haunting love stories, the kind of romance I love to read – served with a garnish of mystery, suspense, and yes…magic.

Before embarking on the writer’s path, Krista taught physical geography and GIS courses at CSUF and Fresno City College before taking an Academic Coordinator position at UC Davis Cooperative Extension where she built a GIS program to assist agricultural research. She lives in California with her husband and a menagerie of dogs, goats and one spoiled horse while continuing to write the Canyon Trilogy and an anthology of cozy mysteries.

“Tell stories.” It’s one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received. Stories inspire people to grow and expand their horizons. They entertain. They challenge. They comfort. Simply put, they make life much better.
I’ve been telling stories all my life. When I taught kids years ago, I told stories that helped them understand, learn and develop. Later, as a corporate training manager I used stories to demonstrate examples, to encourage better business practices and to stimulate learning. As a college professor I found stories to be instrumental in challenging people to think and comprehend.
Today I continue to tell stories. You’ll find them in my nonfiction curriculum books and all of my award-winning novels. My hope is you’ll enjoy my stories and share them with your friends.
Then, tell your own stories. It’s a great piece of advice.

Without the Lampshade-How I Learned to Love my Brown Martini

MM-Google_plus_headerAbout Without the Lampshade-How I Learned to Love my Brown Martini:

I was convinced that I had been called to the Methodist ministry. But then on a hot Sunday morning one of my parishioners was able to get my undivided attention during a sermon with his zany antics of spitting a tobacco wad out the church window. It was a good five feet from his pew and he never missed. I was so fascinated I lost my place in the sermon, deciding right there that the religion business was not for me. This has nothing to do with drinking but does illustrate the natural humor in my life, which escalated measurably during my drinking years.
Did you ever wake up under a chicken coop covered with overnight droppings? I have. Have you ever barbequed yourself on a hot stove? I did. Have you ever come home smashed, ending up the unintended clown for your daughters’ sleepover? I did. Can you turn into Fred Astaire on the dance floor after several drinks? I can. Were you ever so hungover you forgot your own name? I was. Have you ever, in an inebriated state, almost run into a house on wheels in the middle of the street you were driving on? I did. Did you ever turn down a drink that tanked a business? I did.
I once went with my brother-in-law for a haircut, an excuse to go to a bar, and lost him for three days. In Vegas at the 21 table I drank myself into oblivion just because the drinks were free. I almost fell off the roof of the Peabody Hotel, smashed, looking for the famous ducks. Once I spent fifteen minutes behind a parked car after smoking pot and drinking martinis, because I thought the car was turning right. I had a three-martini lunch with Dorothy Parker. I was saved by my daughter from asphyxiation when I passed out in a running car in front of our house.
“Without the Lampshade-How I learned to love my Brown Martini” is my tale of boozing through roughly twenty-five years of my life, performing some hilarious antics that defy belief. In a quarter century I made it my job, a career, if you will, to pursue hard drinking in lieu of becoming the typical working stiff. It was more important to get to the bar for the first drink than work late for advancement. But I was still lucky, mostly finding people and companies that drank as much as I did. I was a happy drunk that has one hell of an adventure to relate.
At the time I traveled eighty percent of the time, on an expense account, and I enjoyed the feeling of living the good life on someone else’s buck. These shenanigans I write about happened coast to coast with my home base a bar in Des Moines, Iowa, much like the Cheers bar on television.
As a “professional” drinker, for several years my life was all about booze, not pursuing a livelihood, not a personal life, just getting bombed or somewhere in between. The intoxication was what I lived for. If not for a caring wife, I would still be doing it. After thirty-five dry years I still do not know why I did it, except I loved, maybe still do, the taste of Scotch, or vodka, or Bourbon, or gin, or beer, or wine, or…

Author Bio:
From his early years working in television, in its beginning stages when everything was live, Jack Dunning was writing copy for commercials and occasionally a short feature, but there was always that desire to write something bigger. During this period he toyed with the short story but didn’t yet have the expertise to really put words together. His first entry into active writing was doing sales letters, brochures, catalog copy and print media ads in the junk mail industry.
After leaving this business, he started publishing his blog, The Dunning Letter, covering the privacy issued of the day, posting 730 articles over almost five years consisting of over 400,000 words. Then he launched the Nasty Jack blog posting 441articles over approximately three years consisting of some 250,000 words covering all aspects of politics. Since putting both blogs on hiatus, he became serious about writing fiction and completed his first novel, Nymphomania Bloodlust, which he was able to finish in just three months. Since then he has completed and submitted five short stories to various magazines, selling one.
His latest book, WITHOUT THE LAMPSHADE-How I Learned to Love my Brown Martini, is a humorous memoir that covers some of Jack’s wild drinking days. If you are looking for a few hours of laughs (incidents like, after boozing all night waking up under a chicken coop covered with overnight droppings) with a vignette here and there of sheer reality, you’ll want to read this book.

James D Mortain uses an author pseudonym, and brings authenticity to his work through twelve years of police service with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary in the UK. His father’s death and the birth of his first child shaped a defining period and re-evaluation of his life, resulting in 2012 with his resignation from the police force and a move to North Devon.

Jobless and homesick, James returned to Bath visiting friends, where a chance encounter and conversation with successful author, Chris Ryan, motivated him to start writing. Believing everything happens for a reason, and nothing happens by chance, James embarked on creating a fresh British detective series, infused with paranormal overtones, and influenced by experience and a close friend with extraordinary ability.

The City of Bath is the focal point and base for the fictitious detective, who in the first novel travels to North Devon in search of a missing Bath student.

G. M. Kilby grew up on a diet of Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark and Frank Herbert. This developed into a taste for Ian M. Banks, Stephen R. Donaldson and everything ever written by Michael Creighton.
Understandable then, that he should choose science fiction as his weapon of choice when entering into the fray of storytelling.
REACTION is his first novel and is very much in the ‘old school’ technothriller style. Whereas, COLONY ONE MARS, is more of a pure scifi feast, and is the first book in the Colony Mars series.

A Future for the 99 Percent: The 4 Keys to Peace, Happiness, Security, and Connection

BudClark_BookCoverAbout A Future for the 99 Percent: The 4 Keys to Peace, Happiness, Security, and Connection:

The following Amazon verified purchase review was placed by LHG on 8/7/16: “A fascinating read – A Future for the 99% recounts the meeting of two strangers on the L train in Chicago on a freezing cold day, one (the author) has a ton of ideas in his head to make the world a happier, more peaceful, more secure place – the other is a multicultural, smart young person working as a barista after years of college education and worried about her parents, her granddad and her own future.

What unfolds is a long conversation about hugely inspiring ideas and a call to action to try out the 4 Keys as the author presents them for 30 days and see if your life feels better. All grassroots social movements start somewhere and Bud Clark is lighting a fire with this book.

It’s a highly engaging read, a real pleasure to pore over, and whether you put it into practice or not, you feel more hopeful, more at one with the rest of the world, you feel like you can understand where others are coming from better, you want to go out and act on the positive juice this book gives you.

I really recommend everyone on the planet gives this book a go. What do you have to lose?”

Escaping Death, Embracing Life: The Jack Grinbaum Holocaust Experience

20160722_103950-1About Escaping Death, Embracing Life: The Jack Grinbaum Holocaust Experience:

In “The Everyday Remember; Holocaust Legacy” readers learned about the full lives of Holocaust Survivors Jack and Genia Grinbaum. This new book “Escaping Death, Embracing Life” is the transcript of an interview I did with my grandfather, Jack Grinbaum. It details his early life in rural Poland, time spent in the ghetto, two concentration camp escapes, the horrors of the camps, liberation and details of life in the Displaced Persons Camps. This interview ended with Grandpa Jack’s arrival in Belgium in 1946. Whether or you not you have read “The Everyday Remember; Holocaust Legacy” or not, this interview will be educational, enlightening an inspirational. While Grandpa Jack lost almost his entire family, the Nazis could not extinguish his inner drive and desire to thrive in his later life. This book/interview also contains details about my grandmother, Genia Grinbaum. Even though I could not do the same type of detailed interview with her, Grandpa Jack discusses what he knows about his wife’s grueling Holocaust journey. There are almost no Survivors who made it through all of the camps that Grandpa Jack survived while Genia spent more time in the camps than almost any other Survivor. People often had trouble believing the obstacles they faced and overcame. Learn all about these two incredible human beings and their journey through these most horrific years. This is truly a Survive and Thrive Legacy.

Author Bio:
I am the grandson of four Holocaust Survivors. I was born on January 15th, 1975, but the story began much earlier. Two from Poland and two from Czechoslovakia. The Grinbaums, from Poland, arrived in the United States in 1961 after a fifteen year stop in Belgium. Both had horrific experiences in the Concentration Camps. The Weisses, from Czechoslovakia, survived doing Slave Labor (grandpa) and hiding in various closets after escaping a deportation center (grandma).

My mother was born in Belgium and my father was born in the small Czechoslovak town of Trnava. My mother’s parents brought her to the United States at the age 12 and my father and his parents arrived when he was 5. My parents met at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and were married in 1969. This joined not just my parents, but my grandparents as an incredibly unique, remarkable “family of survivors”. My sister was born in 1971 and I was born in 1975.

Growing up I was fascinated with family history. I was, without question, a “grandma’s boy and grandpa’s boy”. I was amazed with the Grinbaums and how they ran this incredible men’s clothing store. My grandfather’s charisma especially captivated me. He was the man that could do it all! The Weisses also captured my imagination with their organization and precision. I was neither charismatic like the Grinbaums or precise like the Weisses, so I lived vicariously through them and loved every minute of it.

I also loved hearing about “The Old Country”, the transitional years in Belgium and Israel and what life was like when they first arrived in the United States. The Grinbaums constant search for fun and enjoyment and the Weisses preservation of “order” and “peace-of-mind” captivated me. While being Jewish was a part of their background, the religious part never really interested me. I enjoyed learning about how the religion played a part in their lives, but had no real desire to get involved with prayer. I had a Bar Mitzvah and did what I had to, but frankly couldn’t stand a second of it. I loved the history that I knew was real. I could match faces with the stories. The idea of a guy thousands of years ago parting a sea never did resonate with me.

Beyond family, sports was love. I would read the newspaper daily, memorize statistics and watch any baseball, basketball, soccer and football game I could find. I was an encyclopedia of sports knowledge by the time I was eight. I also loved playing sports. I was never a great player but always loved participating.
My sister and I were very close growing up and this was important as we had yearly car trips around North America. We were in the back seat of a two door 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix all the way from Milwaukee to Quebec City, Washington D.C., South Carolina, Fort Lauderdale or some other far off place. Our parents were teachers and August was that time frame after summer school ended and before regular school restarted.

I was a mediocre student in high school until senior year, when it all clicked! Sometimes you keep at things and a bunch of light bulbs go on all at the same time. I went from Homestead High School to Cardinal Stritch University. The time at Cardinal Stritch was fantastic, a terrific choice and fun 4+ years. Unsure what I wanted to do, I became an elementary school teacher. Frankly, I couldn’t think of an alternative and since I enjoyed being a camp counselor, I decided I would enjoy being an elementary school teacher. I spent two years as a substitute teacher in Franklin and Hales Corners before accepting a job as a K4-8th grade physical education teacher working with troubled youth in Milwaukee. After one year in Milwaukee I got the big break I was looking for in West Bend. I had the honor of teaching 2nd and 3rd grade for eight years.

I then became a family man. In 2005 I met my future wife. We got married in 2007 and our daughter was born in 2009. We made a decision that I would leave teaching in order to take care of our daughter. It was a fantastic move. I began learning about the sales and business world as I was caring for our daughter. Along the way, I found that the creativity, organization and people-skills I learned as a teacher I could use in business. I turned a dormant retreat center into a jam packed operation with-in a year. All of this working from home (for the most part) and caring for our daughter. I began to experiment in other areas of business and found that everything was coming full circle. The lessons I learned from my grandparents and my teaching experience helped me form a new path. I also finished my Masters of Arts in Education from Viterbo University which further helped me learn valuable life, communication and writing skills. I had outgrown the retreat center position and started Expert Promotions LLC, named after my grandfather’s store (Jack’s Expert Tailoring). Still working from home I help various other small businesses blossom. I also work part time at Milwaukee Area Technical College.

As all of this was happening, there was some sadness. In 2001, my Grandma Weiss fell and broke her hip. Just after that my Grandpa Weiss had another stroke. In 2002, just 45 days apart, they died. In 2002, my Grandma Grinbaum had to be moved to an old age home. Her dementia had been getting worse for years. In 2009 she passed away after a long, sad battle. My Grandpa Grinbaum fought through cancer and chemotherapy in 2010 with ease, but it came back and quickly got the better of him in 2012.
I now live in Brookfield Wisconsin with my wife and daughter. My parents still live in the area and my sister lives in Minnesota with her husband and two children.

About Writing My Books:
I have been asked several times during television, radio and newspaper interviews about how and why I decided to write these books. The answer is: I have been preparing these books for just over forty years. While I didn’t start taking notes in my crib, my experiences with these four incredible people started as far back as the day I was born.

As early as I can remember, I hung on every word my grandparents said. I was fascinated with their journey, their survival and their renaissance. I knew as a child that their death would be very difficult for me. I was right. I was 27 when the Weisses died, 34 when Grandma Grinbaum died and 37 when Grandpa Grinbaum died. I kept trying to tell myself that my loss was nothing compared to all the losses that they experienced in life. Nonetheless, in each case it took me quite a while to handle the loss. In the Spring of 2015, 2 ½ years after Grandpa Grinbaum died, I knew the time was right. I don’t know how I knew but I knew…and so began Holocaust Legacy Books.

I began writing “The Everyday Remember: Holocaust Legacy” and everything just sort of magically came together. The best part was the closeness that I felt to the Grinbaums as I was writing the book. The worst part was when it was over, the feeling of saying goodbye to them again. As I began promoting the book, I found that the former customers of “Jack’s Expert Tailoring” certainly hadn’t forgotten my grandparents and held a deep love and affection for them. The same held true with all of the people they had crossed paths with. I am continuing this blog and site, in part to keep the memory going as well as their legacy.

When I completed the first book, it was immediately on to the next book, “Czech Mates: Holocaust Legacy”. Since it had been thirteen years since the Weisses died, I wasn’t sure I would feel as connected to them as I did to the Grinbaums. In reality, nothing could be farther from the truth. I felt like I jumped right into their living room circa 1985. I also jumped into their lives in the 1920’s, 1940’s and 1960’s. I felt that I got to “meet” them at various stages in their lives. It was a magical journey that gave me such special time with two of my very favorite people.

These books tell a story, lay out a legacy and place these four incredible individuals in their rightful place. Genia, Jakob, Sarlota and Tibor blazed a path and left a legacy of “Survive and Thrive” that will continue to leave an impact on the world for years to come.
