I have just completed my latest work – a nonfiction gay romance travel book. This is a deeply personal and important story, and I am glad to share it with you. I spent the better part of the past two years researching and writing the book to tell the story of my first trip to Thailand and how it has changed my life.

Two introductory chapters provide a narrative background of my formative years growing up in the Midwest of the United States, and beginning my adult life in Los Angeles. My disillusionment with the gay culture of L.A. and West Hollywood led me to search for a much different life.

Many of the pivotal scenes in Thailand take place in the infamous gay boy bars in the Silom District of Bangkok, and the Sunee Plaza Neighborhood of Pattaya. I encounter a string of seductive Thai young men, their youthful splendor as alluring as sirens. The numerous love scenes are poetic in nature (with notable exceptions). There are over 100 pictures embedded within the story. Most of these were taken by me during the actual events.

The book is not a travel guide per se, yet seamlessly incorporated within the story are details about Thai culture, language and cuisine, gay resorts, neighborhoods and boy bars, and how not to fall out of a tuk tuk as its racing through the streets of Bangkok.

The book completes with the final chapter of my return to the U.S. after a life-threatening event in Thailand. We witness the repercussions of how my awakening begins to change my life and the loved ones around me in both subtle and profound ways.

Because this is a contemporary true story and gay travel book, I hope it is one to which many of you can relate, and if you wish, embark on a similar venture of your own.

Who is Billy Battles and why are so many people trying to find him?

As our story begins we notice nothing especially unique about Billy–just another boy growing up in 19th Century Kansas brimming with the prevailing dreams and ambitions of the era.

Then, at 19 Billy’s life careens into one calamity after another. While defending himself and some companions, he accidentally shoots and kills the malevolent matriarch of a clan of Kansas cutthroats and thieves. I have finished writing the second book in the Finding Billy Battles trilogy which is now released. And a book based on my experiences as a foreign correspondent in Asia from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. Its working title is The Last Rickshaw Home: A Foreign Correspondent’s Journey Through Asia.

I am a frequent speaker at seminars and symposiums dealing with such diverse topics as war correspondence, international affairs, relations between Asia and the United States and the critical topic of how American companies are competing globally. I have spoken at seminars sponsored by Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, the U.S. Automotive Export Council, the International Trade Association, the World Trade Center, the Council on Competitiveness, the Competitiveness Policy Council and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, to name a few.
