In addition, environmentalists label Canada’s vast oil sands as the “tar sands”. As a point of clarification, there is no “tar” in Canada’s oil. Canada’s oil sands are comprised of bitumen. Bitumen contains a mixture of sand, oil, clay, and water, which has a high viscosity, and a higher degree of sulfur. Canada’s vast oil sands region is estimated to contain over 170 billion barrels of bitumen.

Canada is in the process of approving several major pipelines, which will allow the country to export its large quantities of crude oil supplies to international markets. They include: Energy East, Northern Gateway, and the Trans Mountain expansion. Ultimately, Canada will be able to work with all of its various constituencies to construct the pipelines, which will help Canada Emerge As An Energy Superpower.

The family of a young Claudian named Gaius is summoned to Capri, where Gaius meets the two future Emperors Gaius and Claudius, and he is summoned before Tiberius, who gives him the cognomen Scaevola (because he is left-handed) and sends him to Rhodes to learn from his slave Timothy. Following that, he is promised a legionary position. When there, Athene sends him a message. He must prove the earth goes around the sun, he must try to build a steam engine, and he must learn the art of war, and she gives him some cryptic clues as to what to do in certain circumstances.
Scaevola has learned about the heliocentric theory of Aristarchus, but Timothy shows him that Aristotle had proven that is impossible. However, Scaevola has been told by a Goddess to prove it, so it must be possible, except he cannot see how. Timothy and Scaevola go to Egypt, and see the steam engine that will eventually be in the Library of Alexandria. Scaevola also sees the corruptness of the local Governor. Tiberius dies, and Caligulae (he has two feet!) starts his bizarre imperium.
Eventually Scaevola is instructed to arrest the Governor Flaccus, and when he does, and thanks to a suggestion from Athene proves the corruptness, he is appointed Tribunus laticlavius to the Fulminata in Damascus, where he has to somehow survive a drunken Legatus, win a number of battles, deal with emerging Christianity, and finally help save Judea from the imposition of a statue of Caligulae into the temple of Jerusalem.
The book aims to be historically accurate (except where it is clearly fictional) and the resolution of the temple issue is only a slightly dramatized version of what is recorded by Philo of Alexandria. The novel is the first of a trilogy but it does have an ending where the reader could stop, provided they did not want to know how the major problem ends.

I write science-fiction type novels, many of which could also be described as thrillers, and they tend to reflect my unusual background. I am a semi-retired professional scientist (a chemist), and I am concerned that many people seem to think we must flee from science. We cannot. Society now would collapse but for the advances of science, and there are a large number of issues coming in the future, such as climate change, energy, materials shortages, and so on. We can deal with these, but only if we do so properly. Some of my novels include some of these problems, and while some may think I exaggerate them (I do) it does not hurt in fiction to have a really bad problem, and it does not hurt for it to be sufficiently bad to wake people up. The science in my science fiction novels is designed to show how science works, in the hope that it will help people evaluate “science” spoken by influential people.

I also own a private research company, which has led me to meet “important” people, including very senior politicians and business people. For a few years I was a Director on the Board of two ICI companies. This has given me an insight on how things get done, and the sort of people who do them. Most novels are based around “the ordinary person” but I have focused more on people in important positions..

I grew up in rural parts of New Zealand, and because those who lived there were strongly self-reliant, this has given me an independent look at life. I studied chemistry at the University of Canterbury, and in my first year I got into a challenge with some female arts students. My case was, they only study and criticize; scientists do stuff. This ended up with their saying I could not write a novel, so I went away, and over the summer vacation, I did. After three rejections (!) I gave up. (Little did I know three rejections were hardly getting started.) In 1968 I spent three days in Czechoslovakia, entering from Poland at the same time as the invasion, and some of that has given me experience for writing thrillers.

I now live in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, with my cat Horatio, my wife of 42 years having died recently. While I have largely worked in the private sector, I have still published 100 peer reviewed scientific papers, many of them single author papers. I have two projects continuing. One is the conversion of biomass to carbon for a company called Carbonscape; the other involves seaweed-based cosmetic skin gels under the brand name Nemidon. I have written four scientific books and ten novels, details of which are on my website.

Author Bio:
I was born and raised in Fanwood, New Jersey. In 2002, I moved to Bloomington, Indiana. I am a co-owner in my family’s internet business. Though I do enjoy my work and want to continue with it, I have always wanted to be a writer. My first book Switching Stations, Switching Stories came out last year and this year on June 15, 2014 my second book – a time travel story, Between Two Worlds came out.

I live in Marietta, Georgia with my hubby. We’ve together since we were 15, which makes me somewhat of an expert on happy ever afters.
I began weaving stories together in my mind as a child and began writing a little over 10 years ago. I love to write romantic suspense and I’m currently working on a historical western romance.
