Hi, I’m Seamus Beirne. I grew up in Ireland and emigrated to the United States at eighteen to study for the priesthood. After ordination I went to Southern California to teach Latin and English in a Catholic high school. Things happened fast after that: I earned an M.A. in English, met my wife, left the priesthood, got my first Social Security card, got married, and had three children. I spent the next twenty-five years as a high school English teacher and administrator, including a stint as president of the teachers union. Ann and I share our home in Irvine, California with our dog Lucy and enjoy frequent visits from our two grandchildren. Our three grown children are gainfully employed and live away from home. Keeping our fingers crossed.

History has always been an interest of mine, especially Irish history. I am inspired by authors like Ben Kane, William Dietrich, Valerio Manfredi and C.J. Sansom–authors who bring the past to life through powerful characters and a tangible sense of place.

Although I had written opinion pieces for the Los Angeles Times and contributed to school newsletters, I never attempted to write fiction until seven years ago. Since that time I’ve completed three historical novels one of which, Breakout From Sugar Island, was published by Fireship Press in September, 2015. Two writers, two continents, one story. Z. Labuschagne lives in Cape Town, South Africa, while L. M. du Preez lives in Vancouver, Canada.

Our collaboration has been a challenge, but it has also created a reality-escaping story that is expressed in an unusual way. We decided to utilize our different voices through two main characters, Mila and Poppy, each of which the reader gets to emotionally experience and explore.

With a 9-hour time difference between Cape Town and Vancouver, countless Skype conversations, hundreds of emails and a month-long trip to South Africa, we created SYNTH: SEVERED, a story that follows the intertwining events of two friends that have gotten involved in a treacherous scheme that promises instant fame and success.
