Yaakwdaat Aya, This is Yakutat
About Yaakwdaat Aya, This is Yakutat:
Yakutat, Alaska is known as a town of strong individuals. Even in that atmosphere, this reviewer is sure Kadashan stands out.
Kadashan dives into the world of fiction where the themes are simple: leaving, adolescence, loving, and fishing.
While the writing is highly idiosyncratic; there are such thought stoppers as the “proud face of Mount Fairweather,” “the Scandinavian population, of which Ole claimed he proudly partook,” and the “thicker magnitude of ice.” After a bit, the reader stops minding these and realizes it’s all a part of the vigorous prose.
Kadashan is at his best when he describes the daily life of the village. The storekeeper, really a teenager in awe of the girls, comes alive for us.
Arnie and Richard Jones, young men whose father has recently died, are facing the pain and difficulty Alaska Native children have faced for over fifty years. Do they leave home and familiar surroundings for a boarding school education? They are old enough to be of great physical help at home, yet if they are going to exist in the modern world, let alone advance in Western society, they must leave home for the school year.
We have thrown hard choices at these children and their parents. Kadashan makes us realize just what they’ve given up for us.
D. Longenbaugh (Juneau Empire)

Author Bio:
Kadashan was given his birth name by his grandmother after his great grandfather, Kadashan, whose clan is located on the southern end of the southeast panhandle of Alaska. The elder Kadashan, as a young man, was one of the guides to world traveler and naturalist, John Muir. In his elder years he was known as a “peace-maker” among his native peoples. Kadashan means “red tide coming.” In coastal Alaska when a red tide invades the bays, it means that people should not eat shell fish because the red tide is poisonous and can kill people who eats shell fish during this time. When the red tide shows it is a warning to stay away from shell fish such as clams, etc.
Kadashan began writing when he was in college. He was encouraged to by his creative writing instructor, who recognized his passion for story-telling. Twenty years later his retired teacher and college mentor visited him, read the stories he had stored in his desk drawer, and persuaded him to find a publisher. In time his rejection slips were thicker than his manuscripts. Eventually, he was discovered by the publisher of the Alaska Native Magazine who began to feature his short stories and his water color paintings that illustrated his stories. Yaakwdaat Aya is now published as a short story collection in eBook on Amazon and in paperback from Create Space.
Shortly after, he began writing essays for the Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native newspaper. His commentaries dealt with Indian politics and tribal governments. Eventually he was under contract with the Juneau Empire and authored a monthly column for the Capital city’s statewide newspaper. He tweaked these essays and self-published “The Law of Nature and Nature’s God” in eBook; it is also in paperback in Create Space.
His latest, “Kadashan Speaks–Legal Plunder,” clearly demonstrates the adverse signs of the times in America and how the federal system is using legal plunder to fashion illegal matters into legal laws.
“When Raven Cries” is Kadashan’s first novel. It is available in eBook and Create Space. He is presently occupied with writing another novel and a non-fiction book about the history and culture of his Tlingit clan.
Kadashan received his education from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is a retired commercial fisherman, a salt water charter boat captain, and tribal government president. He lives in Yakutat with his wife near his children and grandchildren.
He said, “I was inspired to write when I was in college. My creative writing instructor, who thought I had a lot of good stories to share, helped me to develop short stories. I wrote about a dozen stories in one semester and when I left college I stored them in my desk drawer. Twenty years later I was visited in my village by my former teacher who read my stories. She asked me why I was hiding them and encouraged me to polish them and find a publisher. It took another twenty years to be discovered, and I have been writing a lot lately.”
He shares this thought, “When I write short stories I am inspired to create characters from people I know, in my mind I develop a plot as I write. Most of my stories are taken from actual events. ‘When Raven Cries’ is the result of a personal experience when my younger brother got lost and this event caused the entire village to drop everything and engage themselves in the search. Whenever I start writing a novel I do use an outline and develop character sketches. I also write articles and essays and I simply do reporting on political issues. In my book Yaakwdaat Aya, the stories that I began writing in college, are illustrated with my water color paintings.”
Kadashan also adds this, “After my creative writing instructor visited me and made me take my manuscripts from my drawer I left her in my office to read them. She challenged me to find a publisher and left that afternoon. I never saw her again, but I took those stories and began to work on them; my rejection slips were actually thicker than my manuscript, but in time I found a person who owned a magazine in Alaska. She began to use the stories. I finally got recognized. I began to research self- publishing; those experiences took me to the present.”

Author Bio:
DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the bestselling author of two award-winning thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-ass women characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.
Raised in the Midwest, she earned a BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Several years later, she wrote her first novel and was hooked. The Kate Jones adventure thriller, Bad Spirits, was first published in 2010 as an online serial, and was immediately popular with Kindle and Nook fans. Dead of Winter, Death Rites, and Touring for Death soon followed before she began the far grittier Leine Basso thriller series in 2012 with Serial Date. Now, she tries to give equal time to both Kate’s and Leine’s stories, a must for her (happily) impatient readers.
DV currently lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, a chef-turned-contractor, and several imaginary characters who love to tell her what to do. Her most recent books include Cargo, The Body Market, Bad Traffick, A One Way Ticket to Dead, and Yucatán Dead.
