After a life time of writing poetry, books, nonfiction, and legal documents, it was author Ray Bradbury’s friendship and encouragement that finally inspired Dale E. Manolakas to pursue writing as a career. He taught her that the characters wrote the book–she didn’t. Raised just outside Los Angeles by a surgeon father and a homemaker-author mother, Dale E. Manolakas had always aspired to an acting career, but also had to make a living.

Dale E. Manolakas earned her B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles, and M.A., M.S., Ph.D. and J.D. degrees from the University of Southern California. She is a member of the California Bar, had the privilege of clerking for The Honorable Arthur L. Alarcón at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, was a litigator in two major Los Angeles law firms, and a senior appellate attorney at the California Court of Appeals, as well as an Administrative Law Judge.

Before that she was a teacher, primarily at the high school, adult school, and university levels, and holds a public administrative services credential. In addition, she has pursued her passion for acting, primarily on the stage, but also in film and television. She is a member of both Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA. She also has raised three very independent daughters and lives with her husband, a retired attorney, in an otherwise animal-free environment in California.

Lara Swann writes hot, sexy romance with a touch of humor and a lot of passion. She has a thing for wounded alpha heroes and the fiery women who steal their hearts.
Her relationships are funny, sexy and spicy, and she gets as many thrills in pitting her characters against each other as she does when they eventually come together in an explosion of heat.
When she isn’t living in one of her many fantasy worlds, she attempts to focus on her respectable day job in a large, too-expensive city and dreams of a lake house in the country.

Levi Koenig, A Contemporary King Lear by Dorothea Shefer-Vanson

levi-koenig-cover-kindle_smallAbout Levi Koenig, A Contemporary King Lear by Dorothea Shefer-Vanson:

Three sisters and an elderly, ailing father. Sounds familiar? Yes, Gloria, Renata, and Corinna parallel King Lear’s three daughters in some ways, but not in others. Each one is struggling to combine work, family and love-life with caring for their father, but unlike Shakespeare’s characters they are not cardboard parodies of either good or evil. Each one is a complex character and is doing her best in her own way to be the good, caring daughter they think their father deserves. However, when they find that their father has been sending money to an unknown woman, and that what they had thought was an idyllic marriage may have been a sham, greed, guilt and complicity rear their ugly heads, altering the relations between them. Their father’s filipina carer adds a comic touch, possibly reminiscent of Lear’s Fool, with her curious mangling of the English language.

The daughter of refugees from Hitler’s Germany, I was born and brought up in England, but later moved to Israel. With degrees from the London School of Economics and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem I was able to work as a free-lance translator-editor-writer, ending up as in-house translator-editor of English publications at the Bank of Israel. I have three grown children and seven grandchildren, to date. My hobbies are: painting (I paint the covers of my books), gardening, listening to classical music, and studying German and French. In addition to my blog, which I update weekly, I write a monthly article, ‘Letter from Israel,’ for a small journal in England, and occasional articles on various subjects for other journals.

“When The Stone Shepherds Awaken” by Mark Barkley

MKBarkley-300dpi-3125x41675About “When The Stone Shepherds Awaken” by Mark Barkley:

He was a freak, he thought, catching the lemon whiff of the suicide pill in his hand. Why had he been abandoned?
On a distant planet far off into the future, there is a human colony twice removed from Earth with a country preparing for war.
Sabienn Feel is a military cadet being fast-tracked for promotion as their enigmatic head of state, The Great Leader, readies his armies for battle. Sabienn is a lying, thieving cheat but he is earmarked for greatness, despite his erratic attempts to shoot himself in the foot.
His world comes crashing down when one day he grows wings.
With the shock of the hideous on him, he now finds people viewing his once perfect body as something freakish. But not only that; people are now actively trying to kill him.
He also finds out that not only him but thousands of men his age have grown wings around the world.
With his wings comes an intuitive ability to pick up an object and see a history of someone who held it. This ability has not gone unnoticed by higher powers within the realm.
But what is it that The Great Leader wants of him? What is it that he has to do to bring himself back into the love of this man he worships? Why does his survival lie with taking the life of a man whose guts he hates but he still questions it? And after all is done, will The Great Leader save him?

Author Bio:
I have always been a fan of the classic pulp science fiction genre, by which I am referring to the ‘Buster’ Crabbe Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers series. Ray guns and Rocket ships – no profanity, eroticism or hard hitting social messages which seem to pervade current entertainment. Just nice, entertaining romps into a fantastical future to entertain the brain cells for a while!

In short I wanted to write a tale which my eldest daughter (who at time of writing this is 12) could pick up and read, or could tell her friends about and suggest they read it, without any form of censorship but which would also appeal to a wider audience too.

Does this make it a children’s book? Absolutely not.
There’s political schemes, dastardly plots and undertones of larger topics such as how the different colonies interact, the rampant commercialism and much more – but I’ve tried to put it in a form which means you can take from it what you wish. If you want a deep meaningful exploration of the socio-political worlds of the 23rd Century then go for it! if you just want misadventure and people trying to survive against a backdrop of a solar system in turmoil, laser pistols firing, defeating maniacal robots and foiling plots of evil-doers then again be my guest.

The main point is I am just writing stories which entertain and amuse my tiny grey cells. I’m not trying to write ‘like anyone’ or claiming to be a proficient author of top notch epic tales. I just write what I like and how I like. If you like them too, then that’s wonderful! I always love hearing feedback from people who have read any of my stories as it helps me to refine and improve as necessary.
I do hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Dismissive of neighbourhood boys DARCY and HOWIE, and her best friend JESSIE who deserted her, she hides out in a squat, changes her appearance and assumes the name MARY-ANNE.
The village is overlooked by the ruins of Trial Bay gaol which becomes a focus for her vivid, disturbing dreams. These tell the World War One story of GUSTAV, a German prisoner of war, and his secret love affair with GRACE which culminates in her pregnancy.
Gradually, Stella meets locals like elderly DORIS, and friendship with Darcy develops into love. Changes in her life go deeper as she wrestles with her identity. She hates lying to Darcy and confides her flashbacks reveal her unsettling resemblance to Gustav. Further, the dreams only occur when she wears a ring inherited from her deceased mother, SONIA.

Stella reunites with Paul and Kerry at hospital where Doris has collapsed, and discovers Doris is family. As Stella and Paul become closer, he discloses his complex relationship with his mother, MARY. When Doris awakes she has startling revelations for the family gathered at her bedside, which explain some of the mysterious events affecting Stella. Doris’s revelation is the catalyst for reconciliation across four generations.
Stella realises she has run away home.

Bio Present Tense
What happens when PJ finds her old journal, and in it is jotted the bones of a story?

What happens when that story has been rattling around in her head for fourteen years?

What happens when she’s newly retired and has time to pursue this dream?

She starts, of course!

In the journal the story outline is set at Trial Bay gaol near South West Rocks, a beautiful place where PJ’s family has holidayed for years. She is inspired by the history of the Germans interned at the forbidding gaol during the First World War.
