Tlingit Stories are rarely without a moral or straightforward point. This is true in this book, and although it may seem outside the boundaries of defined fascinating fiction, this story is true to the makeup of Tlingit oratory. Here in Kadashan’s writing, there is a history, a reality of experience and discovery that is typical in Tlingit story telling. It might be best to refer to such story development as “bicultural fiction.” Kadashan subtly contributes to his awareness by writing a story based on true situations of his community’s history, setting it around a potlatch, and by creating characters who are experiencing loss and grief, and who are looking for methods to address their pain. The potlatch—in this case the memorial potlatch—brings to his words addressing grief. Grief is commonly addressed through story, through potlatch, through song and speech is one of the most powerful ways of addressing grief. All of these elements are woven into the social structure of Tlingit life and one usually does exist without the other. The importance of oratory and story is explicit throughout Kadashan’s novel. Raven is a part of Tlingit existence, and certainly of many of our traditional stories, where he either stirs up mischief, or he provides guidance. It stands to reason that Raven should show up in new stories too, and this is one way of continuing the tradition of story for the Tlingit and by the Tlingit. Raven is not worshiped as a deity but is recognized as he who delivers the “goods”, brings the message, or spurs awareness. Tlingit writers and all readers should be encouraged by Kadashan’s story, and celebrate the awareness that this particular raven brings in his words.

Kadashan was born in Sitka, Alaska. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan. The elder Kadashan was known by historians as Chief Kadashan, however in his later years he was regarded as a “peace-maker.” When he was only six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. His mother decided to move back to her hometown of Yakutat, where she married his step-father. After his elementary school years in Yakutat he went “outside” to Holland High School in Holland Michigan and later to Mount Edgecombe Boarding School near Sitka in Alaska. Kadashan did not start looking into writing before attending a creative writing class at Sheldon Jackson College. And even then, it wasn’t until during his time at Brigham Young that he learned the real discipline of writing. In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories. For six years he worked as a columnist for the Juneau Empire and a statewide Native newspaper, the Tundra Times.
He learned a lot about tribal issues when he worked as the Tribal President of the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. He drew from his experiences to write about politics for the Empire.
Kadashan is a contemporary author who draws his inspiration from the oral traditions of his Tlingit people. Of course, because of his Tlingit heritage, he is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives, which stem from his education at Sheldon Jackson College and Brigham Young University; his work also reflects influences from Western Culture. Kadashan should not be regarded as an author torn between two poles, but rather as a mediator and like his great grandfather, Kadashan is, through his writings, a “peace maker”.
