A Personal Note About the sculpture – – “Sleeping Ariadne”:

Now back in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, this 1900 year-old sculpture is one of the few surviving major works of the Roman Empire. It is in turn a copy of an even older sculpture of me, made in Pergamon, an ancient Greek colony on the Aeolian coast of Asia Minor, better known to you moderns as Turkey.

Since the sculpture was re-discovered and restored in the Italian Renaissance, it has been copied many times, especially by painters, who for some reason concluded that the pose is erotic, and used it or adapted it again and again. The great joke is that, far from depicting me as a lady of the evening rising lazily from her bed of shame, I was actually in another pose, and broke it for a moment to rub the back of my neck, cramped after hours of posing in the filthy hot studio of Epigonus, the leading artist of the day in Pergamon. When I broke my pose, Epigonus, who was forever yelling at me about something, was furious, but as I reached back to rub my poor aching neck and shoulder, he cried “Stop! Hold that position right there, Ariadne. Do NOT move, or you can forget what I owe you for last night!!”
