Being a youngster in the 1950’s meant that I was a voracious reader in what has been called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. That meant that for me, my heroes were not on the hockey rink or gridiron – but instead in my local Library where at 12 I had a full Adult card (thanks Dad!) and took out more than 5 books a week.
Everyone from Heinlein, Norton, Leiber, Pohl, Anderson, Simak, Asimov, Brackett, Van Vogt and more….I fell in love with and eventually owned Ace Doubles of my own. While I never knew who wrote the Tom Corbett – Space Cadet series, I fell in love with them and they had a place of honor on my own bookcase too!
With that kind of an introduction to Science Fiction, it’s no wonder that when got my writing work done, I turned my own fictional side of my brain to writing same. It’s one thing I know to write – and a totally different matter to release same to the world – something that I’ve just started to work on….suffice it to say my own works are rooted in that Golden Age and it’s that era that I’d like to one day be known as a teensy contributor to in some small way.

When I was a kid, one of my teachers told a story about how she was called by God to be a nun. That night I went home and prayed harder than I ever had before, “Dear God, please don’t make me become a nun. Please don’t make me become a nun.”
My prayers were answered. But once I crossed nun off the list, it would be a long time before I knew exactly what I was meant to do. Over the years I had some jobs I loved (working as a program coordinator for a non-profit animal rescue), some jobs I liked (freelance writing), and some jobs I hated (my experience as a waitress has turned me into the excellent tipper I am today).
Success with freelance writing gave me the courage to start working on my real dream–writing romance novels. I now spend my days writing steamy contemporary romances featuring quirky heroines, hunky heroes, and always a happily ever after.
When I’m not writing, you’ll find me coaching other writers, hanging out with my husband and twin daughters, snuggling with my rescue dogs, baking, traveling, and of course, reading romance novels.

After a life time of writing poetry, books, nonfiction, and legal documents, it was author Ray Bradbury’s friendship and encouragement that finally inspired Dale E. Manolakas to pursue writing as a career. He taught her that the characters wrote the book–she didn’t. Raised just outside Los Angeles by a surgeon father and a homemaker-author mother, Dale E. Manolakas had always aspired to an acting career, but also had to make a living.
Dale E. Manolakas earned her B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles, and M.A., M.S., Ph.D. and J.D. degrees from the University of Southern California. She is a member of the California Bar, had the privilege of clerking for The Honorable Arthur L. Alarcón at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, was a litigator in two major Los Angeles law firms, and a senior appellate attorney at the California Court of Appeals, as well as an Administrative Law Judge.
Before that she was a teacher, primarily at the high school, adult school, and university levels, and holds a public administrative services credential. In addition, she has pursued her passion for acting, primarily on the stage, but also in film and television. She is a member of both Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA. She also has raised three very independent daughters and lives with her husband, a retired attorney, in an otherwise animal-free environment in California.

Big Dog
Big Dog by Bruce Deitrick Price
Big Dog is a sun-fun-and-crime novel set in Virginia Beach, 1971, with the Vietnam War and a hurricane as backdrops. A fast, often funny but intimate story told by a tough-guy detective.
Ben Morgan, a young PI, likes his cases simple, good guys versus bad guys, so he can help the good guys and give the bad ones a good kick. But there’s a murky, shades-of-gray war dragging on in Vietnam. Societal change is blowing in the wind. Nothing’s simple anymore. Certainly not the cascade of crimes and mysteries he finds himself in.
Morgan takes a break on the boardwalk, Labor Day Monday, when a young woman throws off her clothes and runs screaming on the beach. The woman is Abby Dillon, the only daughter of the local kingpin, Jim Dillon. Rumor has it that his poker pals call him Big Dog.
The next day a couple comes down from Richmond. They want Morgan to find their daughter Alice, and make her go back to college. That evening Morgan finds her with a rude hippie named Lefty. But two days later he gets a call from Alice’s roommate. Alice didn’t turn up. Now he needs to find Lefty.
Morgan stops by the Association for Research and Enlightenment, probably the most famous place in Virginia Beach. He encounters a fat man named Dixby Schwartz, a schemer who sees a way to extract money from Jim Dillon. Nine years earlier, Abby Dillon’s boyfriend disappeared mysteriously, murdered or maybe just gone to California. Schwartz thinks he knows what happened.
Meanwhile, a hurricane is churning up the East Coast. A bad storm puts people on edge, and makes them more likely to take chances. When Morgan goes to meet a man in a big waterfront house about a job, he gets knocked out, and wakes up next to a corpse named Dixby Schwartz.
Morgan is a levelheaded guy, tough if he has to be, a bit of a kidder, loyal his girlfriend Sue. He’s rattled as mystery piles on top of threat. The only thing Morgan can do is charge forward, confront people, find clues, and solve crimes before they overwhelm him.
Big Dog is much inspired by Raymond Chandler’s PI novels set in Los Angeles. Price started wondering what Raymond Chandler would do with his hometown, Virginia Beach? Land of sun, sand, tourists, hurricanes, political corruption, and good Southern manners. Big Dog is narrated by the PI. The first sentence is: “I’ll start with the naked lady.” Arguably more engaging than “Call me Ishmael.”
A rich couple in Florida, the first people to read this novel, proclaimed: “a real page turner.”

Author Bio:
Bruce Deitrick Price is the author of eight books, an artist, and a poet. He writes widely about education reform and founded Improve-Education.org in 2005. His literary site is Lit4u.com.
He grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and lives there now after several decades in Manhattan. Big Dog is set in set in this famous tourist town on the Atlantic Ocean. Price used his own memories, and lots of hearsay from his businessman father, to create the book’s texture.
Price graduated with Honors in English Literature from Princeton. He thinks of himself as a serious novelist but also an experimental novelist. Writing this detective novel, and another one set in Manhattan (i.e., Art and Beauty), were in a sense experimental projects. How would Raymond Chandler perform his magic in very different settings?
One of Price’s early books (but still in print) is American Dreams, which was catalyzed to a large degree by drawing words randomly from the dictionary. He wrote the so-far unpublished Manhattan Express the same way and has written poetry and created art using similarly random methods.
Price makes no claim to understand the market or literary formulas. What he believes in is starting with a big canvas and filling it up with the most interesting material possible. He recently finished a sci-fi novel called “The boy who saves the world” and is now at work on a novel inspired by William Gibson. Big canvas, lots of pretty details, take chances– that’s Price’s approach.
In the long-running debate about whether creative writing is craft or art, Price is enthusiastically on the side of art. Too many people think they can make literature the same way a guy makes sandals or jewelry: you craft it. Universities like this perspective because they want to make money by training students to follow their craft. This has led to a lot of uniformity and dullness in our poetry, a theme which is explained in an article on the Internet titled “16: The Plight of Poetry.”

Ian Sutherland was brought up the Outer Hebrides, idyllic remote islands off the west coast of Scotland. In an effort to escape the monotonous miles of heather, bracken and wild sheep, Ian read avidly, dreaming of one day arriving in a big city like London. And then, at the tender age of 12 he was unexpectedly uprooted to Peckham, an inner city suburb of South-East London. Ian quickly discovered that the real London was a damn sight more gritty and violent than the version in his books and shown on tv. Undeterred, Ian did what he did best, and buried his head in books, dreaming of other places to escape to.
Roll forward some years, and Ian can still be found with his head in a book. Or, given that he enjoyed a successful career in the IT industry, an eBook Reader. And now, having travelled a fair bit of the globe in person and even more of it via the Internet, Ian lives with his wife and two daughters in a small idyllic village, surrounded by green fields, copses and the occasional sheep, yet located just outside of the London he finally came to love.
Here, he writes gritty, violent crime thrillers full of well-rounded characters, set in and around London. His stories also feature the online world that most of us jump into blindly each day, but Ian exposes its underbelly and dramatically illustrates how dangerous the internet can be for the unwary.

Smokin’ Weed with Jesus — The Gospel According to Cannabis
About Smokin’ Weed with Jesus — The Gospel According to Cannabis:
The story begins in a small town near Portland, Maine where Richard, a bankruptcy attorney, has just taken part in the liquidation of a pornography store. Returning home, he makes the mistake of reaching back for the one thing that soothes the guilt of separating others from their livelihood, and drives headlong into an oncoming vehicle. His body, badly broken, Richard is whisked off to Portland’s Maine Medical Center where he hovers between life and death. As he is about to undergo surgery, he slips into a near death experience and mysteriously finds himself standing in a familiar looking place, confused about where he is and how he got there.
But, some distance away, sits a man appearing to be dressed as though he had just stepped out of the summer of love. Sitting next to him, Richard surprisingly discovers that this man is none other than Jesus of Nazareth. The ensuing conversation is largely based on Jesus’ calm criticism of humankind, religion, and the need for change in order to foster progress.
After two thousand years, the Son of God, again attempts to show humanity the errors of its ways – including the need for humor, the issues of ego, and of course, tolerance. He is joined by the one, the only, Satan who, as it turns out, is not the ferocious beast he has always been assumed to be. In fact, it is his wife Lilith who wears the pants in the family, ruling him as well as the underworld with an iron fist. However, Satan has appeared in heaven only as comic relief, with his taunting attitude and irritating ego. Also making an appearance is the Archangel Gabriel, and the biblical prostitute Mary Magdalene.
The conversation comes to a close with Richard receiving both a mission and a gift, He returns to the human world profoundly changed with the memory of his experience intact, and carrying out the Messiah’s request, he resumes his life with new purpose and an ability that only he possesses. Smokin’ Weed With Jesus is an irreverent, humorous criticism given by the King of the Jews and takes aim at the root cause of the worlds problems – our problems. What this book is not is political. The issues that have plagued human history rely on a far more fundamental cause, and it the author’s goal to present not only the cause, but the simplicity of coping with them.

A native of Upstate New York, Clifford Beck received the bulk of his education at the State University of New York at Albany. His writing began with experiments in poetry, inspired by ancient literature. Later, he attended Southern Maine Technical College, earning a degree in New Media. His work is largely an exploration into human darkness and the dynamics of madness. Having a background in design and illustration, he also creates the cover art for his novels
Now a resident of Portland, Maine, he tends to write what speaks to him the loudest, occasionally relying on music for inspiration. But, ideas have always come to him during the most unlikely of situations and is always with pen and pad at the ready. During the course of his life, he has been seen as someone in possession of a rather peculiar personality, but has come to accept this as a commonality among writers in general and an expression of what makes the mind of a writer tick.
He has most of his life in the helping professions and has witnessed a good deal of human suffering. Using his work as a tool of reflection, he brings these experiences to the surface in the form of ideas pertaining to social issues and the direction the world appears to be taking. Additionally, Mr. Beck has discovered that without the constraints of religion, he is able to paint the darkness of human nature on a much broader canvas. And using a strong sense of visual imagery, is able to bring his novels to life, immersing the reader in a world governed by a unique and separate reality.

Author Bio:
Five and a half years ago I found myself surrounded by family and friends in Bill Burke park as my worst fears were confirmed. My husband, Dustin, was dead after only a year and a half of marriage. At 28 I was a visually disabled widow, my husband had taken his own life and I was left behind trying to put the shattered pieces of my life back together.
Bit by bit, I started to rebuild, though I continued to mourn my loss and battled to find closure. Since we weren’t blessed with any children I found myself struggling to find meaning and purpose in the brief time I had with Dustin. I desperately wished I could see him, or speak to him, even if it was only for a moment to say goodbye. It was from that desire that an idea began to form in my mind, and a scene started to take shape.
Then one day, as I listened to music the characters began to come to life, and the world in which they lived took form in my mind. It took nearly two years for the entire story to develop and when it was done I had enough material for a trilogy of books, as well as the title for book 1: Soulbound.
Writing this book has helped me to find the closure and purpose that felt so out of reach after I lost my husband. It has also provided me with a sense of legacy for the time I was given with my Dustin. This trilogy is the final gift I have to offer him.

Free Me by Laurelin Paige
About Free Me by Laurelin Paige:
I wasn’t supposed to be working the night I met JC.
Before him, I’d been content with the daily grind, managing one of NYC’s top nightclubs. So what if my life didn’t have a happily ever after? I didn’t believe in that anyway.
Then JC showed up.
Sexy, rich and smooth-talking, JC is nothing more than a distraction. I’m not interested in a night-in-shining latex so it’s easy to push the playboy away. Or it is until my life spins unexpectedly out-of-control. Then he’s there for me, offering a new method of survival, one based on following primal urges and desires that requires me to abandon my constant need for control.
His no-strings-attached lessons obliterate my carefully built walls. And as I discover freedom, I start to feel things for him that I shouldn’t. Things that make me fear for my newly vulnerable heart. Because JC has secrets of his own, and his secrets don’t want to set him free.

Author Bio:
Laurelin Paige is the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestselling Author of the Fixed Trilogy. She’s a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio.

Author Bio:
Ruth Whenham, a recent Finalist Medal Winner in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards (2014), began her career as a freelance writer a short time before reaching her 40th birthday. To say it was something of a mid-life crisis would be absolutely true! A graduate of Human Psychology and a former employee of the National Health Service, Ruth now splits her time between writing, looking after her family (she has two children) and volunteering at her local Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
Ruth combines jaunty rhyming verse, humour and great characters to create stories that are entertaining for young children and for their parents alike!
To date, Ruth has published six children’s picture books; all of which have been illustrated by talented artist, Emma K.L. Hunt.
