After a life time of writing poetry, books, nonfiction, and legal documents, it was author Ray Bradbury’s friendship and encouragement that finally inspired Dale E. Manolakas to pursue writing as a career. He taught her that the characters wrote the book–she didn’t. Raised just outside Los Angeles by a surgeon father and a homemaker-author mother, Dale E. Manolakas had always aspired to an acting career, but also had to make a living.

Dale E. Manolakas earned her B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles, and M.A., M.S., Ph.D. and J.D. degrees from the University of Southern California. She is a member of the California Bar, had the privilege of clerking for The Honorable Arthur L. Alarcón at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, was a litigator in two major Los Angeles law firms, and a senior appellate attorney at the California Court of Appeals, as well as an Administrative Law Judge.

Before that she was a teacher, primarily at the high school, adult school, and university levels, and holds a public administrative services credential. In addition, she has pursued her passion for acting, primarily on the stage, but also in film and television. She is a member of both Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA. She also has raised three very independent daughters and lives with her husband, a retired attorney, in an otherwise animal-free environment in California.

NOLA Gals by Barbara J. Rebbeck”Hear me! Ia

nola girls book coverAbout NOLA Gals by Barbara J. Rebbeck”Hear me! Ia:

“Hear me! I am Katrina.” The storm brews off the coast of Louisiana. Essence Lafontaine and Grace Woodson don’t know each other, but soon Hurricane Katrina will blow into their lives, forcing them together into a different kind of storm — a storm swirling with the winds of bigotry and prejudice.

The hurricane strikes with a fury and although sisters Essence and Chardonnai are rescued, their grandmother Mimmi stays behind with their skinny poodle, George. This old dog is known for nibbling underwear he finds under beds, but these beds are under water now. And where is Mama? A nurse, she was at the hospital when Katrina struck.

After terrifying hours in the Superdome, they board a bus for the Houston Astrodome along with other victims of Hurricane Katrina, including Harold, a mysterious man with a trumpet. Could he be Essence’s long-lost father?

Meanwhile in Houston across town, Grace has been suspended from the posh St. Catherine’s Middle School for her disobedient behavior. Her father, a psychiatrist makes her go to the Astrodome with him to help the evacuees. She sees before her the lessons of tolerance in her required reading, the classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” come to life, and at a loss as to how to help, she begins to read the book aloud to a tattered group including Essence and her new family of fellow survivors.

With the city of New Orleans devastated, the Woodson family takes in Essence and her sister, Char and both girls begin school at St. Cat’s. But troubled waters are again rising.

Grace’s best friend, Lindsey and others at the school do not accept the NOLA girls and a campaign begins to scare them away. At the same time a movement is underway by parents to ban the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Sister Joan, the head of the school struggles to maintain order and the supportive values of her school.

Grace’s mom, a veterinarian & her dad suggest a trip for Grace to Tylertown, Mississippi where an animal rescue mission is underway for the pets left behind after Katrina. Grace is surprised that her mom will let her boyfriend, Jack come with them. While there, Grace learns that Essence has disappeared with Char. Where are they?

This is the story of two girls from completely different walks of life and their journey to bring about a healing that will change lives forever.

Author Bio:
For many years, I was a writing teacher and consultant, a very busy one with tons of student work to read until late in the morning. When I retired, I said to myself that now it was my turn. And so I set out to write “NOLA Gals,” the tale of two teens caught up in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the worst storm ever to hit the shores of the United States. I saw my audience as both teens and adults because this disaster swirled and devastated all ages. Last January after years of writing and then finding a publisher, my dream came true. And recently I learned “NOLA Gals” was a finalist for the IAN Book Award.

So how do I spend my life now? I love to work in classes with my novel. I will be Writer-in-residence for two districts this year, working with students during the day and with their teachers after school. I will be teaching in lab classes that will allow other adults to observe. I also love visiting adult book clubs and leading discussions at libraries. I have a website at: www.nolagals.com that is chocked full of student photos and work and ideas for writing solo or in a classroom. I am also spending many hours promoting my book online. I have learned the ropes of twitter, facebook, pinterest, etc.

To be a good writer, you have to keep reading other writers. That’s how you learn. I am an avid reader with lots of favorite authors like John Green, Hillary Mantel, Thomas Hardy and my friend, Anne-Marie Oomen.

My dad was British and came over to America in 1942 to train as a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II. He met my mom, and they married, and he moved over here permanently in 1946. I grew up half-British, loving all things English. I started visiting my relatives in England many years ago, and I try to get over there every few years. I love the theater in London. My record is seeing nine plays in nine days. I love theater here, too and have season tickets for theater in Detroit. I also visit Stratford, Canada every summer to see plays there. I have a very large collection of British royalty china that fills an entire room. After the death of Princess Diana I specialized in finding mugs and plates from her era, but lately I’ve been seeking out items from the births of both little Prince George and Princess Charlotte. By the way, “NOLA Gals” is available in both Canada and England!

I live by myself in a little house with a cat I adopted a year ago from a shelter. She is pearly white with gray coloring on her face and tail. I named her Gracie after Grace in my novel. She is quite spoiled, but she had a tough life before me, having a litter of six kitties before she was one-year old so I just want to make her life easy.

Besides Gracie, I have a life full of nieces and nephews of various ages. I love keeping up with all of them, watching them grow and achieve. That’s the best.

I have just started writing the sequel to “NOLA Gals.” No title yet, but it will be the story of Essence as she looks back over the ten years since Katrina and her struggle to rebuild her life and family. I’m in the research stage now. I have three new books to read, all about the decade after the hurricane stuck with lots of moving photos. I’ve had many requests to continue this story so I’m looking forward to sharing the writing journey with students. I’d also like to see “NOLA Gals” as a play or even a movie.

Tainted Deception

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00024]About Tainted Deception:

Ivy Maisen thinks she knows exactly what type of guy Chase Hudson is — billionaire, extremely good looking, cocky as hell, and a guy that women salivate over…
But looks can be deceiving…
Underneath the tuxedo, luxurious demeanor and smooth character is a bad boy covered in tattoos, piercings, the lead singer in a band, and he owns three of the clubs that Ivy frequents.
Oh and he rides a Harley…
Will Ivy finally open her eyes and allow herself to see the real Chase or will she reject his alter-ego and refuse his advances again and again?
When desire is tainted with deception and lies, does that person become less desirable?
Could love be the one thing powerful enough to push them past the deception and down to the real person underneath the facade?

New York. 1938. Living in the quiet apartment of his overprotective grandfather, fourteen-year-old Tommy Black knows little about a world on the brink of war. With his grandfather captured, Tommy barely escapes with his family’s magic staff. Desperately trying to figure out to use the staff, Tommy learns what he can as he and family friend Mister Ali fight golems, shadow creatures, magicians, and Djinn on their way to the world’s center of magic–the great Citadel of London. But it’s when escaping on an enchanted train that Tommy faces his biggest challenge: The beautiful and wild young magician Naomi, whose talent with magic is only rivaled by her ability to insult Tommy in creative ways.

With the world seemingly arrayed against him, can Tommy discover the secret of the Staff of Light in time to save his grandfather?

For fans of young heroes struggling to discover their role in a familiar yet mysterious new world, Tommy Black evokes Harry Potter and Percy Jackson only with the twentieth century backdrop of a world hurtling toward World War Two.
