After a lifelong career as a working guy I retired from heavy construction as a Boilermaker, a commitment that required me to be available for my on-call assignments that severely limited taking time for vacations or travel. Years ago, I promised my wife, Sharon, that when I retired we would travel, even buy a camper to spend leisure time in as well as pursue whatever we wanted to do. I’ve kept that promise and now we’re enjoying the life of a retired couple and have more than made up for the sacrifices we made to get where we are today.
I also decided to finally follow the advice my high school teachers gave me when I was young and ambitious but hard headed, and that advice was to be a writer. I went from the comfortable world of old fashioned typewriters to learning the digital era of the keyboard and writing software on a tumultuous, stressful journey of teaching a computer what I wanted to appear on the finished work. A lot of yelling and expletives deleted, the software taught me instead. Along the way, I wrote a fun story, A Realm Within Time.
Sharon dotes on family and home, loves to spend time at our place by a lake, travelling and our favorite thing to do, cruising the Caribbean. I spend time with her as well as fishing, gardening, keeping up with the lawn and a lot of other things. I also spend time at the keyboard. Sometimes there’s no writing for a while and other times it takes a lot to tear me away from it. I also have a good number of R/C planes but have little time to fly them. I like to invite others to fish with me but for the most part I like to fish alone. It’s a good time to reminisce and devote thoughts to my writing. I mostly practice catch and release unless we’re in the mood for a fish dinner.
I truly enjoy making people laugh and I seem to have a never ending way of uttering quips, puns and silly sayings. I never know what I’m going to say most of the time, so my humor is usually spontaneous and off the cuff. Leave ’em laughing and they’ll smile for a while. I enjoy that a lot. I’m also the guy who’ll strike up a conversation with someone I never met before.

The greater part of my life has been spent in the Southwest, a good bit of it in the back-country. I grew up with the Navajo, went to school with them, and later worked alongside them, forging enduring friendships along the way. Those friendships became the inspiration for this series. My writing focuses on the people of the Four Corners region, past and present. I tend not to romanticize my characters, preferring instead to paint them as I find them. They have much the same qualities, good and bad, as the rest of us. Though this book is a work of fiction, a concerted effort was made to maintain the accuracy of the culture and people, as I have come to know them. I hope you like them as well as I do.

This story hearkens back to a slightly more traditional time on the reservation, and while the places and culture are real, the characters and their names are fictitious and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

T. Jackson King (Tom) is a professional archaeologist and journalist. He writes hard science fiction, anthropological SciFi, dark fantasy/horror and contemporary fantasy/magic realism–but that didn’t happen until he was 38.

Before then, college years spent in Paris and in Tokyo led Tom into antiwar activism, hanging out with some Japanese hippies and learning how often governments lie to their citizens. The latter lesson led him and a college buddy to publish the Shinjuku Sutra English language underground tabloid in Japan in 1967. That was followed by helping shut down the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus in 1968 and a bus trip to Washington D.C. for the Second March on Washington where thousands demanded an end to the Vietnam War.

Temporary sanity returned when Tom worked in a radiocarbon lab at UC Riverside and earned an MA degree in Archaeology from UCLA. His interests in ancient history, ancient cultures and journalism got him several government agency jobs that paid the bills, led him to roam the raw landscape of the Western United States, and helped him and his wife Leslee raise three kids.

A funny thing happened on the way to normality. By the time he was 38 and doing federal arky work in Colorado, Tom’s first novel STAR TRADERS was a stage play in his head that wouldn’t go away. So he wrote it down. It got rejected. His next novel was published as RETREAD SHOP (Warner Books, 1988). It was off to the writing races and Tom’s many voyages of imaginative discovery have led to 19 published novels, a book of poetry, and a conviction that when Humans reach the stars, we will find them crowded with space-going Aliens. We will be the New Kids On The Block! This theme appears in much of Tom’s short fiction and novel writing.

Tom lives in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA and hangs with a group of smart and tolerant Westerners. Divorce has taught him to smile a lot and to work at being a Nice Guy. Still, he is pretty weird. Elijah John Sanders (1989 – present) was born in Juneau, AK. But moved to Grants Pass, OR when he was only five years old. In both places, Elijah used to spend copious amounts of time in nature with his dad and younger brother on hunting trips. Elijah lost his dad at the age of eleven, and entered into a long ‘desert time’ in his life, which lasted throughout his teen years.
