That night—I still have nightmares. It happened so quickly, so effortlessly. Walking to our cars in the far parking lot one fall night, we were jumped from behind. Eric hit the pavement quickly with a gash on his head. Blood trickled down his ear and he was dazed. I looked up to see the attackers. One was a large Puerto Rican kid, over six feet tall, who had hit Eric on the head with a piece of pipe. Even in the chilly air, he was wearing only a black muscle t-shirt and jeans. An American flag bandana covered his head and a diamond stud decorated his left ear. A snake tattoo on his right arm completed the picture. His accomplice was an overweight black man of medium height with no distinguishing features. He wore a Yankees cap and a black leather jacket. His pants were riding low, and his boxers showed in the rear. I didn’t know what kind it was, but a gun of some sort was stuck in his waistband.
As they came at me, I just stood there, frozen. I wasn’t terrified like I thought I should be. My breathing was calm and easy, my eyes focused on the six-footer first.
I was angry.
I was sick and tired of the world being this way for me, and for others like me. It had finally become time to fight back. The attacker raised his club, but he was too slow. I kicked him in the knee and heard a loud pop just before he let out an ear-piercing scream and fell hard to the ground.
I grabbed for the club and gave his buddy some unexpected dental work before he could even reach for his piece. He dropped to his knees and then fell face first to the pavement unconscious.
I felt under Tubbo and removed his weapon. I’d never held a gun before. It molded to my hand like it had always belonged there. Suddenly—I felt like I should never be without it again. The feeling was overwhelming and calming at the same time.
Without thinking twice, I stepped behind my unconscious mugger and fired two shots into the back of his head. It was easy, no remorse at all. I couldn’t believe how simple it was. The Puerto Rican kid tried to get up and run on his shattered knee after he saw this, his eyes wild with fear. He didn’t get far. Two shots to the back of his head made it a very short trip.

(SHORT STORY) Although I have been loose with the facts and changed names and dates to avoid copyright violation, this story was inspired by actual events. Adjacent to where I work is a basement littered floor to ceiling with “antiques” (aka junk). Among the wreckage is a shelf of National Geographic magazines dating back to 1924. They’re fun to peek through. In one 1970s issue, I read the story of a man who set out to walk from the northernmost foothills of the Andes in South America to the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego. His wife joined him on part of the trip, but died in an accident. The interviewer asked if he intended to continue, and he said yes. Internet searches, trips to the library, and perusals of future issues turned up nothing for me in the way of a followup or resolution to this story. Naturally, as a fiction writer, I took it upon myself to invent the rest of his story.

In my story, he turns up again a dozen years later, crazed but still wandering. Three decades later, another Nat Geo photojournalist finds him in Patagonia and walks with him, trying to establish whether he is a hoaxer or the real thing. Guillermo Faulkner, as I’ve named him, slowly turned from a serious world traveler to a lost troubadour, to an urban legend. As a short story writer, I value brevity. This is the first time I’ve been so taken with an idea that I’ve been tempted to write a novel. Unfortunately, I feel I’ve mastered neither the state of mind nor the state of affairs necessary to dive wholeheartedly into that effort. So I sought out a way to tell the story briefly. Thus the twist: A man walks into a bar claiming that this urban legend is real. The entire story is told as a story within a story, and the dramatic tension comes from the question: Can this man, this americano, be trusted?

About Go Reassured:

Go Reassured is set in the foothills of the Pyrenees in modern day France. The story takes place over several days in early spring.
Philippe Navarro returns to the village for his father’s funeral, loyal hound Cono at his side.

Navarro is drawn back into village life, coming into contact with former friends and adversaries alike, but, when attacked by men under the command of local miscreant Daniel Guérin, he kills a man. It is only after Navarro has been coerced by the local police captain into infiltrating Daniel’s operation that he realises he has murdered a police officer.
At the same time, revelations regarding his father’s life, and death, start to expose the lies of an old friend while further pushing Iris, a former lover, from Navarro’s life.

Navarro manipulates the circumstances surrounding him, setting the bait to entrap Daniel, expose a police informer and maybe even clear a path for his future.

Author Bio:
Born in Belfast, I originally trained as an animator, then in theatre design. I have worked as an opera stage manager at New Zealand International Festival of Arts in Wellington, Wexford Festival Opera, Ireland and the São Carlos National Theatre, Lisbon. I have designed costumes for the Whittier College Theatre in Los Angeles and Theatre Babel, Glasgow among others, and have been employed by most of the festivals in Edinburgh in a variety or roles including Box Office Manager, Hospitality Director, Print Reader and Jury Coordinator. For the last twenty years I have lived in Scotland and am employed within the film and TV industry as an Art Director, having worked with directors as diverse as Stephen Poliakoff, Shane Meadows and Birger Larsen. I am therefore heavily involved in storytelling from a visual perspective.
I attempt to spend my time productively between Scotland and a small village in France, but this doesn’t always go to plan.
