Where Awesome Book Readers Meet Awesome Writers

Seven Days by Lindy Dale

seven days book coverAbout Seven Days by Lindy Dale:

Friends with benefits is fine for some but what happens when a threesome turns into a bizarre love triangle?
Twenty-one year old Sadie Cooper has been too scared to step outside her comfort zone for most of her life. Having lived quietly with her now deceased mother, Sadie finds new experiences difficult. She likes being a homebody, even if it’s little predictable at times. She likes boring because boring is safe. It’s easy to plan for boring.
Nicholas Lawson has other ideas for Sadie, however. From the moment they meet on the beach, the chemistry between them is evident and Sadie finds herself feeling things she’s only ever read about in books. Nicholas only has to say how high and Sadie is willing to jump. And fall. Nicholas can coax Sadie into doing things she’s never dreamed of… like having a threesome with him and best mate Joel.
Sure, Sadie’s attracted to Joel. Insanely so. She might even love him a little if he wasn’t so damn annoying. Joel’s cute and funny, not to mention rather charismatic. But Joel openly admits he’s into ‘bedding not wedding’. He’s not the relationship kind. And Sadie most definitely is.
A harmless bit of fun can get very sticky when love enters the room.

Author Bio:
Lindy began writing at University but never really wanted to be ‘an author’. She wanted to be a Princess or at worst a Kindergarten teacher. Her first novel, Heart of Glass, was penned in 2006 and since then she has become known for writing funny, forthright romantic fiction with a cast of crazy, comic characters. Lindy is also known for her short, romantic novellas which have repeatedly topped the short stories charts in the US and UK. Her most successful work to date, Storm in a B Cup which reached #4 on iBooks was written during her treatment for Breast Cancer during 2012-14 but Lindy gains most of her inspiration from dreams, listening to music and watching ridiculous amounts of reality TV.

The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen’s Daughter by Robert Sultan

Immoderatetemper1About The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen’s Daughter by Robert Sultan:

The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen’s Daughter is the story of a woman who knows how to use a cleaver. It is an exploration of the Chinese proverb “to hit is to kiss, to curse is to love”. It is a tale of China and Jews, of passion and politics, of revolution and mahjong. The author has traveled extensively in China. In this novel he writes of a time when Chinese history and Jewish history collide in the Shanghai ghetto. One reader called it a cross between Portnoy’s Complaint and Kill Bill. If you enjoyed The Good Earth, Wild Swans, The Tin Drum, or The Painted Bird, this is a book that belongs on your reading list.

The story opens in 1908 when news of the death of the Empress Dowager reaches the town of Two Trees. The eight year old Slaughtering Girl works side by side with Grandmother Chen to kill enough fowl for the celebration. Certainly there is no child more skilled with a cleaver but her grandmother wonders what she is destined to do with this gift. Grandmother Chen cannot live long enough to know this destiny but readers can follow Slaughtering Girl as she claims her place in a tumultuous century of Chinese history. At roughly the same time, on the other side of the world, a young Polish Jew discovers that he has little talent for talmudic scholarship and even less for office work. Yet, he too has been given a gift, albeit one less tangible than that of the Slaughtering Girl.

Author Bio:
Mr. Sultan’s first novel, The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen’s Daughter, reflects the author’s deep love of Chinese history and culture as well as his Jewish heritage. He has traveled widely in China and speaks Chinese (poorly). Prior to his career as a writer, Mr. Sultan enjoyed a long career as an engineer, the final six years of which he worked for a Chinese company. Readers are invited to join the authors blog at www.easterntales.wordpress.com.

The idea for The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen’s Daughter came from the observation of a young girl in a poultry market in the city of Kunming, China. The girl was, perhaps, eight years old and she was responsible for the slaughter, plucking, and dressing of the live ducks and chickens purchased by customers. The author was fascinated by the sight of this little girl and the carnage she created. The author wondered what such a girl would be like as she grew to adulthood.

The author in his own words:

People often ask me what influenced the creation of this book. It should come as no surprise that Pearl Buck is one of my favorite writers. The circumstances of her life have provided Westerners with a unique gift, an open window into China of past centuries, authored by a woman who is as much Chinese as she is American. ‘The Good Earth’ is an enduring masterpiece, but another of her books that I enjoyed is ‘Peony’. This is the story of the relationship between Jews and Chinese in the city of Kaifeng. Certainly, my desire to write about the longstanding relationship between Chinese and Jews was influenced by Buck. I think that my main character, Slaughtering Girl, is very much influenced by Bertolt Brecht. In particular, I think of her as a Chinese ‘Mother Courage’. It did not occur to me until the book was complete, but the relationship between Slaughtering Girl and Comrade Zhao must have been influence by the relationship between Xena and Gabriella in ‘Xena the Warrior Princess’. Many of the characters in this book act badly. In this respect, the book owes some debt to the Chinese classic ‘Golden Lotus’ (also called ‘The Plum in the Golden Vase” or 金瓶梅). Golden Lotus is populated by characters quite naturally interested in sex, pleasure, and power. Although still banned in mainland China, it has been a pornographic bestseller for centuries. I think my writing is generally influenced by other writers I like, Philip Roth, Isabel Allende, Gustave Flaubert, Georges Simenon, George Orwell, Graham Greene, Edith Wharton, and William Styron.

The first half of the book was very much influenced by the Eurythmics, ‘Sweet Dreams (are Made of This)’. I could not get the song out of my head.

I am an avid audio book listener. I did not feel that the book was complete until the audio edition was available. Although I am no actor, I am quite happy with my narration of the Audible edition of the book (search for “Immoderate Temper” on audible.com). While I don’t do voices, I do know what the characters are thinking and I believe I was able to communicate some of this in the reading.

I spend most of my time traveling. Several years ago I rented out my condo in New York to some very nice people. This has freed me to wander, mostly, so far, in China, Thailand, and Indonesia. My baggage is very light. I stay at hostels, hotels, and with friends. My writing tools are my laptop, a beach chair by a pool or the ocean, and a gin and tonic. I am currently back in the US for a while, but I am already restless.

Please, please, if you buy this book or download a complementary copy, write a review on amazon.com or audible.com. I believe that this is a book that some people will enjoy and I hope you will help to get the word out.

Wounds-of-the-Father-High-Resolution-2About Wounds of the Father: A True Story of Child Abuse, Betrayal, and Redemption by Elizabeth Garrison:

In the bestselling tradition of Smashed and Glass Castle, this raw, eye-opening memoir tells the powerful story of Elizabeth Garrison’s fractured childhood, descent into teenage drug addiction, and struggle to overcome nearly insurmountable odds. Elizabeth invites the reader behind the closed doors of a picture-perfect Christian family to reveal a dark, hidden world of child abuse, domestic violence, and chilling family secrets all performed in the name of God under the tyrannical rule of her father. Like countless teenage girls, Elizabeth turns to drugs and alcohol to escape. With smack-you-in-the-face honesty, Elizabeth chronicles the dark realities and real-life horrors of teenage drug abuse, living on the streets, foster homes, and treatment centers. She paints an unsparing portrait of scratching and clawing her way out of the grips of child abuse, addiction, and betrayal to find the strength within herself to save her own life.

The Count of the Sahara

the-Count-of-the-Sahara-cover-8-12About The Count of the Sahara:

In 1925, “Count” Byron de Prorok was the most famous archaeologist in the world. By the summer of 1926, his marriage, his career and his reputation lay in ruins. “The Count of the Sahara” is the exciting account of his meteoric rise and fall.
It’s a tale of the Algerian Sahara, warrior tribes, lost treasure, and sudden fame. It’s also a story of wintry desolation, speakeasies, Pinkerton detectives seeking stolen loot, and a young man’s coming of age. From the salons of Paris to small colleges in Iowa, and from Saharan wastes to the streets of 1920s Chicago, readers will determine for themselves if de Prorok was a victim of circumstances, or his own demons.
This sweeping novel tells the tale of De Prorok’s rise and fall through the eyes of Willy Braun, a 19 year old German-American desperate to flee his life in Milwaukee. When Willy uses his only real talent, his technical skills, to save a lecturer from disaster at the hands of an incompetent assistant, he meets Count Byron De Prorok, a glamorous lecturer and world famous archaeologist. De Prorok is everything Willy isn’t; glamorous, handsome, a brilliant speaker and, most of all, rich. The Count needs a projectionist and assistant for the rest of his tour, Willy wants out of Milwaukee for good. This may be his ticket out, but can he trust his future to someone who may not be all he claims?
As Willy and the Count tour small Midwestern cities in the winter of 1926, weaving tales of his adventures and basking in his fame, the story flashes back to the Franco-American Sahara Expedition of 1925 and the unearthing of the ancient tomb of Tin Hinan, the fabled Mother Queen of the Tuareg nation, that had cemented the Count’s already flourishing reputation. Warring local tribes, bad weather and personality clashes make the truth more stirring—and very different from–the tales he tells on the lecture circuit.
What starts as a simple job offer is complicated when a robbery attempt reveals the Count may be hiding stolen jewels from Tin Hanan’s tomb. Caught up in a web of deceit, bootleggers and Pinkerton detectives, de Prorok could be the young man’s ticket to a new life, or another crushing disappointment in a life too full of them.
This fact-based novel contains adventure, lively characters and sly humor seldom found in historical fiction.

Someone killed Joakim.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The whole time I was reading “Dead Man Walking- A Spy Amongst Us” by Toby Oliver, I felt like I could have been watching it as a movie on the big screen. This novel was just as good as—if not better—many of the big-budget movies we’ve seen in this genre. The writing was clear and descripting, with an ever-present tension of high stakes. I liked that the characters seemed “real” (not the stereotypical cardboard cut-outs we see so much of in these types of books), and the dialogue felt authentic enough for the place and time period (WWII Europe). But I have to say there were times where I thought I needed to be taking notes because there was so much going on and in different places and with so many characters. It almost made me dizzy, but in a good way. I definitely enjoyed reading this and think almost anyone will find something about it they like. I’d recommend this to my friends and family with no reservations. The ending makes it seem like there might be more… I hope so!

Fans of British WWII espionage intrigue will love Dead Man Walking, A Spy Amongst Us by Toby Oliver. A British cabinet member is murdered, and the evidence points to infamous double agent, Toniolo, as the perpetrator. The author is a master at weaving deception and conspiracy at every turn of the page. It is a fascinating backstage look at the relationship between England, Germany, and the Soviet Union during the war. The author blends meticulously researched fact with fiction and will keep your interest until the very end. Buy this book if you love spy novels, and you won’t be disappointed.
