This new book in the Marsden-Lacey series puts Martha Littleword and Helen Ryes back in their favorite place: knee deep in mystery and adventure. I had a lot of fun writing this next book because I got to highlight strong female characters from history, such as in this case Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, with fictional female characters who represent the wonderful women I’ve known in my life. Humor, gumption, with a dollop of sass are the leading traits I like to imbue my characters with. This book required a lot of research about water gypsies, canal boats, Romanov history, World War II history, and Russian Cossack culture. It was a lot of fun but sometimes I had to take myself in hand and stop digging. I can get carried away with the historical side of my books. I want things to be based in historical truths and events. Everything surrounding the story of Maria Feodorovna including the dates, people, events and places in this book has grounded in history. My greatest hope for anyone reading one of my books is that it takes them to a playful, enjoyable place for a while. I’ve been blessed in my life to enjoy so many people’s books, movies, tv programs, handmade items (food and otherwise!) that it would be great to return the smiles.
